Everyone should exercise regularly to stay healthy. I know it’s very cold outside these days and you just want to stay inside, right? But hey, even in cold winter, you still need to exercise! However, it is important to exercise safely. Your body needs to warm up before hard exercise. Warming up increases the heat all through your body. Once your body is warm, the muscles are softer. This means that they are more stretchy, so they are able to move smoothly, and help you avoid injury. Here, Min and Yoon are talking about ways to exercise safely.
Min: Hey, let’s go outside and do some exercise!
Yoon: I’ll just stay home. It’s so cold outside. I’d rather watch TV while munching on potato chips.
Min: That’s not a healthy choice. We should work out regularly to stay fit and healthy even when it’s cold. Come on! Let’s move! But hey, before you go out, wear warm, loose fitting clothes to help your body warm up faster.
Yoon: All right. Oh, it’s really cold! I’ll just start running to heat my body. Let’s run!
Min: Wait! Before you start exercising, you should warm up your body first. Otherwise, you can hurt yourself.
Yoon: Then teach me how to warm up.
Min: All right. First of all, you should stretch all the muscles that we are going to use in your high-energy activity. Give yourself plenty of time and stretch slowly for about 15 minutes.
Yoon: Ok. Should I stretch until my muscles feel tight?
Min: Yes, but never stretch until your muscles hurt, and breathe steadily while you stretch slowly. Make sure you have warmed up properly.
Yoon: All right. I think now I’m ready to run. Is there anything I should also remember?
Min: Yes. Don’t forget to keep drinking water. It is very important to make sure that you drink lots of water when you are exercising. This is because you lose water in sweat and from breathing deeply and fast.
Yoon: All right. I’ll drink plenty of water when exercising. Then, what should I do after my exercise?
Min: After your high energy activity, you should always spend some time cooling down. It helps your muscles go soft and relaxed again. I’ll tell you how to cool down. If you are running, slowly reduce your speed, then continue slowing down - don’t just stop. And then, go through the same stretches you did before your activity. Lastly, put warm clothes on so that you cool down slowly and you don’t get a chill. | | | |
