Today, many leaders are aware of the fact that they need to be different. Nevertheless, not every leader knows how to be different. In fact, in recent decades, companies across borders have made significant progress in incorporating diversity into their management. However, people, especially the youth of Korea, still have a long way to go when it comes to combining a variety of experience, cultures, educations, and skills, which form the basis of the open-minded and flexible global leadership required in today’s globalized scenario. Internet Hanyang News (IHN) met with Dong-Wook Lee (Professor, Performative Humanities) to hear about how he has been cultivating his global leadership and his advice to future global leaders at Hanyang University (HYU).
After graduating from Hanyang University with a B.A. in English Language and Literature, Lee obtained a Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University focusing on Business-Government Policy and Leadership/ Advocacy. He has shown his potential as a global leader by working with a diverse array of organizations ranging from multinational corporations such as Google, Samsung Electronics, SK Group to education ministries as well as international organizations such as UNESCO and UNESCAP. While teaching at HYU to nurture future global leaders, he has been working as a director for global strategic alliances at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), spearheading the company’s digital education business development in the Asia-Pacific region. Believing that he could approach his dream only when he gains hands-on experiences, Lee has been continuously making efforts to walk on diverse landscapes across borders.
Lee had taken steps to become a global leader since he was a student at HYU. “I had this strong commitment to myself to give my best every time I met a challenge. Having studied one more year to enter college, I realized that I had to strive harder to lead my life driven by a purpose,” he said. With the willpower to find the path of his life, he rose to a challenge whenever he faced it. In his wish to find his dream by acquiring various experiences, Lee decided to engage in volunteer activities whenever he had the chance to do so. “I didn’t even have time to hang out with my peers while attending college. I spent all my weekends and academic breaks volunteering at numerous organizations such as the Korea Scout Organization and the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). However, I had no regret over what I had done. Had it not been for my efforts and time invested in the meaningful activities, I would not have been able to gain the prestigious opportunities to participate in global forums,” Lee said.
Recognized by his capability to lead diverse volunteer activities, Lee was selected by the National Council of Youth Organization in Korea (NCYOK) to represent South Korea’s youth at the 3rd World Youth Forum of the United Nations System in Braga, Portugal in 1998. As a youth representing Korea, he was able to not only express the stance of his nation but also embrace the opinions of representatives around the globe regarding the youth policies of the era. Moreover, he encountered another opportunity to be exposed to the multinational platform where the latest trends in education were presented and proposals were made. In 1999, he was elected as the Vice-Chair of the 7th World Scout Youth Forum in South Africa. “From then on, I decided to get myself involved in more projects at international organizations,” he said.
As globalization increasingly requires workers to collaborate across vast geographical distances, people are highly encouraged to interact with workers from diverse countries. Nonetheless, many of the youth who hope to enter the global enterprises still overlook the value of gaining hands-on experiences abroad and merely overemphasize the word ‘spec’ referring to a list of certifications such as high TOEIC scores.
“Such a mindset possessed by the youth hinders them from finding their real dream. As one cannot obtain results without experimentation, he or she can never find the ultimate solution to the questions about his or her life without first-hand experiences. With the faith, I have consistently had myself directly involved in cross-cultural organizations. Although not many of the students during the time had been willing to go abroad during college days, I took on the challenge to partake in an exchange program on my own feet to study international relations at the University of Texas when I was only a sophomore. I wanted to test myself,” he said.
As a result of his persistent efforts, Lee worked as a liaison for the foreign media during the Inter-Korean Summit in 2000 and was recommended by the Seoul Press Center to continue his work as an interpreter for the Prime Minister’s Overseas Information Agency as well as the human rights division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With such experiences, he later functioned as the defense minister’s military diplomacy officer when he was a commissioned officer at the Air Force. While he was working at the minister’s office, Lee had opportunities to accompany the minister around the globe on government business. Accompanying the minister in Iraq, he saw huge damages which occurred due to the war, including the suffering of children.
“After seeing the dismal reality of the war through my eyes, I made up my mind to lend my helping hand to the children especially in less developed countries. If it had not been for the hands-on experiences I have acquired throughout my early years, I would not have been able to start looking for ways to promote public interests through a job that I truly love to do. To fulfill my aspiration, I pursued graduate studies at the Kennedy School at Harvard,” he said. Lee also worked as a research associate at Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation until 2009 doing studies on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
“Upon entering the graduate school, I felt that there was a limitation in the field of education. I realized the need to find practical ways to be an innovative thinker. So, I decided to see what the private sector could do to generate value along with public interests,” he said. Since then, Lee has been conducting a research which focuses on social innovation and public-private partnerships in the education space for both advanced and emerging markets, which aligns with his work at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
“Although there are some who reinforce the idea of sticking with one area of study, I’d rather be a ‘renaissance man’ who does superlatively in various fields. I believe we should take numerous fields into account to find a solution to today’s global predicaments. To be a ‘renaissance man’ who could take multi-disciplinary approaches in solving complex issues, I have been integrating the knowledge in the field of Information Communication Technology (ICT) with my empirical knowledge while collaborating with various partners in the field of education.
“Too much emphasis is laid upon the word ‘global’ today. Do not chase after overly fancy or colorful titles. You need to start from small tasks to refine your skills and then exercise the leadership in dealing with larger challenges. Try to be selfless throughout your college years and see matters from the perspective of others. You could discover what you truly want to do in the future once you take time to see matters from a broader perspective,” Lee said.
