PETALING JAYA: An oversupply of eggs over the past month has weighed down prices and pushed up sales for sundry shops.
Federation of Sundry Goods Merchants Association president Lean Hing Chuan said at certain shops, the price of Grade A eggs is going for as low as 25 sen each, compared to 35 sen previously.
“Grade B and C eggs are selling for as low as 23 sen and 18 sen each compared to about 30 sen previously. The prices are low because vendors are trying to clear existing stock.
“Eggs can last, at most, for three weeks,” he said yesterday.
However, Lean warned that poultry farmers were losing out as their production costs were rising.
“The price of chicken feed has gone up. The farmers are losing about three sen for every egg,” he said, urging the Government to revise the ceiling price for controlled sundry items.
In GEORGE TOWN, a check by The Star saw egg vendors reporting brisk sales following the glut in supply since Ramadan with prices down by between five sen and nine sen each.
Poultry farmer Ng Yam Keng said sales were slow during Ramadan as many operators were closed.
“However, the prices are expected to increase by two sen next week,” said Ng, who is also the former Penang Farmers Association chairman
