In the midst
There is a long tradition of composers writing pieces for specific occasions and in remembrance of great artists. Undoubtedly, there will be many compositions written and dedicated to the memory of Van Cliburn and I am honored to be able to contribute “In the Midst.” When I first thought about what kind of piece this would be, a mental image appeared that stayed with me throughout my writing process. I imagined myself in the concert hall following Van Cliburn’s legendary performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958 – the resonance of the concerto lingering, the chords ringing in the air, the emotional energy expanded by Van Cliburn still palpable and the legacy of the performance imprinted onto the hall, the audience and history. As I was creating my own sound world, I found myself in the midst of this energetic reverberance, filtering musical fragments of the concerto through my own compositional voice and reimagining the music as a tribute to all the great performances that leave behind an emotional imprint on the listener. In the Midst is a remembrance, a celebration and an appreciation of an extraordinary musical life forever in our midst. The piece was written for Van Cliburn Piano Competition Gold medalist, Stanislav Ioudenitch in memory of Van Cliburn and premiered at the Van Cliburn Tribute Concert.

A deaf Sea for Solo Tenor Saxophone
A deaf Sea took a motive from the one and only 52Hz whale in the world. When I started writing this piece, I focused on a question: ‘why does this whale produce such an unusually high frequency?’ I imagine this whale having a hearing problem due to abnormality. Through my music, I wanted to express the feelings of the whale – the whale's agony and loneliness because he/she cannot hear anything. In the first section, Ab is the central tone, which I use to describe the deep ocean both in timbral color and sound aspect. The sudden appearance of multiphonics centered on B is the signal of the whale’s entrance; the central tone changes from Ab to B. Also, electronics join in this part with Ab (52Hz) at first, and then B. The struggling of the whale is shown in the saxophone while electronics push to the climactic moment by providing a spectral cluster. Improvisation by the saxophone adds a dramatic effect of describing a scene of whale writhing in agony. After this section, the electronics continue on A b (52Hz) while the saxophone brings back fragments from the first section as a reminiscence. Just like the 52Hz whale, we all seem to be swimming in life with loneliness and agony.

Inner Truth for Solo Piano
Inner Truth came about as part of a larger commissioning project honoring the 2017 centennial birth year of the great Korean composer Isang Yun by the fantastic pianist, Eunmi Ko. Yun is one of the more unique voices in 20th-century music, with work that seeks to join his very personal conception of the traditional music and traditional instruments of his home country with the modernist techniques he embraced when studying and working in Germany starting in the 1950s. In learning more about Yun’s music, I came across a wonderful interview he did with Bruce Duffie in 1987 that included a particular quote that stood out for me: “Music is the expression of an inner truth, and this inner truth is naturally a mirror of today’s events.” I was so struck by these words—by how clear and honest they are—and so in writing my work, I wanted to reflect upon this idea of “inner truth”, something which might be rather quiet or hidden or elusive at the start, but which later emerges as a strong, bold, unwavering force—a force which was always with us from the very beginning. My piece seeks to capture these two sides of this primal energy. Inner Truth is dedicated to Eunmi Ko.

Antithetical Etudes (2016) is a series of contrasting pieces for “well-amplified” piano. The movements not only contrast in style, but also in size and scope. Unlike traditional etudes, these works are not a focus on piano techniques, but instead are studies on the acoustical qualities of the piano. Therefore, the piano is designed to be amplified to bring out these qualities, either from playing “inside” the instrument, or from the sonic colors, nuances, subtleties, power and
energy from the specific registers and harmonies being accentuated.
Michael Sidney Timpson
수상경력은 ASCAP, BMI, DownBeat Magazine, NACUSA, NFMC, SNM, the Lee Ettelson Prize, Music from China를 비롯하여 최근 Harvard Fromm commission에서 대만 DAGUN GuZheng 앙상블을 위한 곡을 위촉 받았다. Kiev Philharmonic, the Czech Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony, the China National Film Orchestra (서양관현악단과 중국 전통관현악단 ), the Qingdao Symphony, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra,대구 시립 교향악단과 국립 국악 관현악단에 의해 연주되었다. Samuel Adler, William Albright, William Bolcom, Donald Crockett, Morten Lauridsen, Frederick Lesemann, Milcho Leviev, Andrew Mead, and Joseph Schwantner를 사사하였으며 University of Southern California에서 음악 학사, Eastman School of Music에서 음악 석사, University of Michigan에서 음악 박사를 취득하였다.
Michael Sidney Timpson’s musical beginnings were borne out of playing baritone saxophone and “electric” bass clarinet with a strong interest in American improvisational forms, especially Free Jazz and Fusion; this would later evolve into incorporations American popular genres, such as Funk, Hip-Hop, and Alternative Techno. A child of the multicultural era in Northern California, he was intrigued with East and Southeast Asian traditional music; these seeds that would eventually bear a lasting impact on his musical style. Originally labeling himself “an Eclectic Maximalist”, his more recent works have drawn from a more Spectro-Minimal and Fusionist vein. A composer in virtually every western medium, he has also composed many works for Chinese and Korean instruments. A winner of multiple composition awards, recorded on major labels, and with significant publications, his works continue to be featured throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Timpson’s compositions have won awards from ASCAP, BMI, DownBeat Magazine, NACUSA, NFMC, SNM, the Lee Ettelson Prize, Music from China and most recently, the Harvard Fromm commission to write a work for the DAGUN GuZheng Ensemble in Taipei. His orchestral works have received performances and recording by the Korea Symphony Orchestra, Kiev Philharmonic, the Czech Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony, the China National Film Orchestra (both western and Chinese), the Qingdao Symphony, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Daegu Symphony Orchestra and the National Orchestra of Korea. Timpson’s works continually appear on radio shows throughout the U.S., Asia, and Europe and have a strong visibility on the web. In 2009, he was was a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar in Taiwan for research on compositional philosophy for Chinese instruments (for which he has already published two articles.) He is currently an Associate Professor of Music Composition at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea and has also been on the music composition faculty at the University of South Florida, Rhodes College and the University of Kansas. A student of Samuel Adler, William Albright, William Bolcom, Donald Crockett, Morten Lauridsen, Frederick Lesemann, Milcho Leviev, Andrew Mead, and Joseph Schwantner, he earned his undergraduate composition degree at the University of Southern California, his master’s at the Eastman School of Music, and his doctorate from the University of Michigan. michaelsidneytimpson.com

Flurry for Solo Piano
Commissioned by and written for pianist Kari Johnson while in residence with the Charlotte Street Foundation, this piece is inspired by the visions of looking through a window covered by layers of snow flurries. Parts of the layers are melted by sunshine and starting to form ice crystals. While they block and reflect lights in different ways, the other parts welcome new flurries to repopulate the surface. These masks of white change constantly and create interesting shapes and patterns. After a while, they seem to make logical sense, and I realize only nature
can create such levels of complexity in randomness.

Hankook Rhapsody for Solo Saxophone
Rhapsody is a one-movement work that is episodic, heroic, nationalistic, and free-flowing. Hankook Rhapsody for Solo Alto Saxophone (2019) features a range of free musical ideas, often resembles improvisation, and several Korean folk-tune inspired passages and scales. The very first long note in the beginning is to describe a morning-calm land of Korea. Rhythmically driven middle section and fading-away last section are also related to Korea, a country that is robust and never sleeps.

International Alliance for Women in Music 콩쿨 입선, Wellesley Composers Conference에 ASCAP Fellow로, University of South Florida New-Music Festival 과 Ball State University Festival of New Music등 다수의 음악제에 초청되었으며 미국과 유럽에서 열린 다양한 마스터클래스와 워크샵, 콘서트 시리즈등에서 작품을 발표하였다.

Unus Mundus for Solo Piano
Unus Mundus was commissioned by pianist Eunmi Ko for the centennial celebration of Isang Yun’s birth. I have long been fascinated by Yun’s compositional technique of “Hauptton” (main tone) which one can hear in his piano solo piece Interludium A, with pitch-class “A” being a centering main tone. Every time I listened to Interludium A, I was struck by a section about five minutes into the composition where he indicates a meter for the first time. This section starts with a disarming B-Major triad, which gets reiterated the line below and suffused with quartal harmonies. I decided that this moment would become the sound world that I would inhabit for my composition. I also felt that taking a moment in time as my inspiration aligns with Taoist philosophy, a strong influence on Yun’s music, in which the part is the whole and the whole is the part, and in which the dark and the light are intertwined with each other. I believe that music in its deepest expression has the power to fuse opposites to create oneness that cannot be fragmented, because as Carl Jung says: “everything divided and different belongs to one and the same world.” This concept, which Jung called “Unus Mundus” from Latin “One World,” seemed like a fitting title for a composition honoring Isang Yun.

Yuán Xiāng for Saxophone and Piano
제목은 LC 색소폰의 탄생을 알리는 문구에서 따왔다: “Houli—The home of Taiwanese saxophone”.
Yuán Xiāng (Hometown/homeland) for alto saxophone and wind ensemble (with piano reduction), is specifically tailored for the final round of the 1st Asian Saxophone Congress International Competition. The composition was inspired by Taiwanese music (from hok-lo, hakka and aboriginal), the history of LC Sax, and the development of saxophone music in the west (jazz and classical, etc.) The title quotes the statement indicating the birth of LC Sax: “Houli—The home of Taiwanese saxophone”.

ZAS! For Saxophone and Piano
ZAS! 는International Society for Contemporary Music Taiwan Section이 위촉했고National Culture and Arts Foundation of Taiwan This combination is from very good friends of mine Dr. Richard Scruggs and Ms. Haiqiong Deng from the USA, both are very phenomenal musicians. They have been asking for a new composition since 2003 and have waited to produce a CD of pieces for this type of duet. Many people associate saxophone with American culture; however, the saxophone was invented and patented in 1846 at Paris by a Belgian musician Adolphe Sax, who taught at the Paris Conservatoire. Originally written for Chinese zheng and saxophone, the composition was to bring back the history where the saxophone started, as well as bridging the French touch with Chinese zheng.
ZAS! is commissioned by the International Society for Contemporary Music Taiwan Section, funded by the National Culture and Arts Foundation of Taiwan.

Three Studies for Solo Piano
These pieces function both as compositional studies and piano études. While each one develops the same pitch and interval relationships, each one also focuses on a different pianistic idea or technique as follows:
Arpeggios: In this piece, flowing arpeggios mutate into different chords before they are finished. Part of the pianistic challenge is being aware of when notes of the arpeggios change and adjusting to unexpected harmonic mutations. As the arpeggios sometime cross over the simple melodic/rhythmic motive that accompanies them, fingering might also present occasional challenges.
Colors: This is a slow study, which may seem odd for a pianistic étude. It’s not a workout for the fingers, but a workout for the ear and for touch. The full keyboard range is used (with much pedal) to create wide reverberating colors made of non-traditional pitch combinations. Players need to listen carefully to all the notes and decide how to balance and shade each color combination on this very large pallet.
Rhythm: Two aspects of this study are immediately identifiable: 1) the rhythm is unpredictable and 2) it relies on well-articulated repetition of the notes C and Db. While these two pitches (and a few others) play important roles in the previous two studies too, here they become an obsessive part of a pianistic “workout”. Other notes and chords appear both above and below them, opening up the music to a wider range of harmonic colors.

Operatic Resonances for Solo Saxophone
Operatic Resonances is a piece inspired by Chinese Peking opera. Various features such as certain rhythmic gestures, melodic minor sixths, wide vibrati, tempi changes, and a general sense of dramatic contrast have been borrowed and adapted into the saxophone writing. The piece also explores the free and strict aspects of meter that is often heard in traditional Peking opera.

Mastering the Art of FrenchCooking에 나온 달걀을 주재료로 한 5 개의 요리법에서 영감을 받았다.
Oeufs are five short movements for piano, inspired by Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking and the recipes from the Eggs chapter in the cookbook. These recipes, one per movement, are used as a compositional device - deriving pitches from the ingredient list, and correlating performance techniques - and utensils - with cooking techniques, while
following the sequence of events in the recipe.

Toccata for Solo Piano and Electronics
‘a wide range of harmony, fast moving notes, section of fugue or canon, repetitive patterns, free style, improvisatory’- these are characteristics of toccata. I realize these characteristics in this piece with piano and live electronic by manipulation of sound through computer program.

Buffalo Dance for Saxophone and Piano
Buffalo Dance for alto saxophone and piano is based on an Indian chant of the same name (recorded in New Mexico in 1954 by John Donald Robb and archived at the Robb Field Recordings on the Center for Southwest Research website). The piece is essentially a fantasy freely using fragments and motifs from the chant. At the work’s opening, the piano serves as an accompanimental drum to the saxophone’s winding melodies, which are peppered with melodic fragments from the chant. This rambunctious opening gives way to other musical reflections of the chant, including a more meditative middle section. The final section is marked by a return to the opening material with the piano reverting to its drumming duties and the saxophone exhibiting even wilder reflections on the chant. Buffalo Dance was written for and dedicated to saxophonist Kenneth Tse who gave the premiere on March 6, 2010 at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference in Athens, GA. Buffalo Dance was awarded first prize of the 2014 J. Donald Robb International Composition
Competition.

Budda’s hand, Sea Grape, Okra, and Poblano from Orchard for Solo Piano
An orchard is a plot of land used to plant and harvest fruit trees. This collection includes fifty pieces, ranging from 45 seconds to just over three minutes, all titled after, and, in one way or another, inspired by botanical fruit. When composing each piece, I considered the various features of a particular fruit in order to arrive at compositional decisions. So, in essence, the music takes on my interpretation of a fruit’s texture, shape, color, or flavor - either in combination or focusing on just one of those elements.
To this end, given the brevity of each piece, I almost see these as “seeds” of what could be more long-form musical ideas. Each piece lasts long enough to express a specific idea - to “make a point” - and then it’s over. There’s no further development or variation, and no kind of extension into a formal pattern. My goal, then, is that when audiences listen to this music they will experience something similar to actually eating a fruit: the experience is brief, but satisfying. Due to the number of individual pieces in “Orchard,” and the fact that in order to perform every piece would require devoting an entire recital or concert to just this music, pianists are encouraged to pick and choose the pieces that meet their programming needs and order them however they’d like. The prospect of this is truly exciting to me as a composer, because it means that there will inevitably be combinations put together by performers that I would never have imagined. Plus, I believe ordering the pieces in various ways will put the music in different contexts, creating a unique experience each time a pianist performs the music.

Tyler Kline is a composer, arranger and audio engineer currently residing in Tampa, FL. His body of work encompasses a wide variety of styles and mediums, including acoustic chamber and large ensemble works; solo and duo works; fixed and interactive electronic/electroacoustic music; and collaborative projects with dance, visual and literary arts. Recent compositions focus on the use of extended sounds/techniques in order to create timbral similarities or differences, as well as textures, between instruments, voices and/or electronics. Tyler's work is deeply influenced by the idea of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese aesthetic and world view that values transience, imperfection, and impermanence. More broadly, his compositions draw influence from a variety of extra-musical sources, primarily from literature. Tyler is co-artistic director of Terroir New Music, an event series that combines the music of living composers with the work of local chefs and brewers. In addition to his work in composition, Tyler is a classical music radio announcer at WSMR, which is part of WUSF Public Media. tylerklinemusic.com

Calligraphy (2016) is a set of piano pieces that derive inspiration from my various works for Chinese traditional zithers. With Eyes Open for Saxophone and Piano
With Eyes Open의 음악적 영감 (재료) 은 2008 년에 쓴 with both eyes (플루트, 기타, 타악기, 피아노)로 거슬러 올라간다 – 이 작품은 색소폰과 피아노를 염두에 두고 with both eyes의 재료들을 재조합해 낸 것이다. 38th Annual Festival of New American Music에 의해 위촉되었다.
With Eyes Open takes as its source material an earlier piece of mine entitled “with both eyes” written in 2008 for Flute, Guitar, Vibraphone and Piano. In “With Eyes Open” the original material is reimagined for Alto Saxophone and Piano, a process that felt very organic especially because the premise of the initial composition was to write a piece that would create a unified whole from multiple perspectives on the same musical materials. As in life, so in music, the only way to gain multiple perspectives on an idea, and to truly begin to know the depth of these ideas, is to open oneself completely to the idea of possibility. Taking a composition originally written for four divers instruments and creating a new piece was opening myself up to these new possibilities. The painter David Hockney wrote, “Cézanne starts to look at the cup before him with both eyes, opening one and then the other, and painting his doubts.” Only through a synthesis of these multiple perspectives did Cézanne see the truth, his truth, in the cup he was painting. With both eyes open then is the only way to really see things one has not seen before, and in the process gaining a perspective that is only possible by embracing and indeed celebrating the very possibilities inherent in the material itself. With Eyes Open was commissioned by Keith Bohm and the 38th Annual Festival of New American Music.
