세계에서 가장 위대하고 가장 잘 알려진 트럼펫 연주자 중의 한 사람

“새첼 마우스”를 줄여서 “새취모”라는 닉네임으로 널리 알려진 루이 암스트롱은 세계에서 가장 위대하고 가장 잘 알려진 트럼펫 연주자 중의 하나였다. 그는 1900년 7월 4일 뉴올리언즈에서 태어나 그로부터 71년후 뉴욕시에서 타계했다. 어릴 때 그는 법에 저촉되는 일을 저질러 감화학교로 보내졌는데 거기에서 처음으로 트럼펫 연주를 배웠다. 1922년에 그는 시카고로 가서 킹 오리버스 크리올 재즈 악단에서 코넷을 연주했다. 그 후 3년 만에 그는 자신의 악단을 결성했고 그때부터 갑작스런 성공의 길을 걷게 되었다. 새취모는 트럼펫 연주에 있어서 혁신자로서 뿐만 아니라 기교가로서도 탁월한 능력을 인정받았다. 그리고 그는 누구도 따르지 못하는 기록을 세우게 되는데 높은음을 연속적으로 무려 280회나 소리 냈다. 그는 주로 정격 스윙 스타일의 트럼펫 연주자로 기억되는데 이로 말미암아 노소를 막론한 전 세계인들로부터 숭배를 받았다. 어떤 비평가들은 그를 “재즈의 아인쉬타인”이라고 일컬었다. 반면 대부분의 사람들은 단순히 그를 트럼펫 연주를 통해서 엄청난 생명력과 스타일을 창조할 수 있는 능력을 가진 친절하고 정력적인 사람으로 기억하고 있다.
