빈센트 반 고흐의 삶은 고독으로 특징지어졌다. 가족과 친구들은 그가 마침내 스스로 목숨을 끊을 때까지 그에게 등을 돌렸다. 빈센트 반 고흐는 1853년 목사의 아들로 태어났다. 그는 일찍 학교를 떠났고 가족들로부터 미술품 딜러로 일하라는 권유를 받았다. 다음 해에 그는 런던으로 이사했다. 그곳에서 그는 첫사랑인 집주인의 딸을 만났지만 그녀는 그를 거부했다. 마음이 상한 반 고흐는 1875년에 파리로 이주했다. 그 후 몇 년 동안 그는 종교에 전념했지만 몇 번의 실망 후에 마침내 기독교에서 멀어졌다. 고흐는 27세에야 비로소 화가가 되기로 결심했다.
반 고흐는 예술가들을 만나기 위해 브뤼셀로 이주했지만 결국 그곳에서 행복하지도, 성공하지도 못해서 부모에게로 돌아갔다. 집에서 그는 사촌 중 한 명과 사랑에 빠졌지만 그의 사랑은 짝사랑으로 남아 있었고 가족 싸움을 일으키고 그 결과 그는 다시 이사했다. 네덜란드에서 몇 년을 보낸 후 1886년 파리에 있는 동생 테오에게 이사했다. 이 기간 동안 그는 인상주의로 눈을 돌렸다. 더 밝은 색상을 실험하고 다양한 그림 기법을 시도하기 시작했다. 그곳에서 예술가들이 함께 살고 일할 수 있는 '남쪽의 스튜디오'를 만들고 싶었다. 폴 고갱만이 그의 초대를 수락했다. 그러나 두 달 만에 그들의 동거는 싸움으로 끝났고 그 결과 반 고흐는 왼쪽 귀의 상당 부분을 잘랐다. 부상이 너무 심해서 다음 날 다량의 출혈로 의식을 잃은 채로 발견되었다. 정신적으로 충격을 받은 반 고흐는 나중에 정신 병원에 입원했지만 그곳에서도 도움을 받을 수 없었다.
몇 달 후 반 고흐는 독이 있는 페인트를 삼키려 처음으로 자살 시도를 했다. 이 기간 동안 테오는 유명한 미술 전시회에 반 고흐의 그림 중 일부를 출품했다. 반응은 매우 긍정적이었다. 반 고흐는 생애 처음으로 예술적 인정을 받았다. 그러나 성공은 그를 기쁘게 하기보다는 두려워하게 만들었다. 그는 정신병원을 떠나 오베르로 옮겼다. 테오를 두 번 짧게 방문한 후 각각의 논쟁으로 끝나고 의사의 딸과 또 다른 사랑에 실패한 후 1890년 7월 27일 야외에서 권총으로 가슴에 총을 쏘았다. 심각한 부상에도 불구하고 그는 여관으로 돌아와 이틀 후 형이 보는 앞에서 사망했다. 반 고흐가 자살한 이유는 오늘날에도 여전히 명확하지 않다.
