a. John went to a museum in Seoul.
b. In Seoul, John went to a museum.
c. *To a museum, John went in Seoul.
In Seoul은 독립적인 구성소가 되나 to a museum은 독립적인 구성소가 되지 못하기 때문이다. to a museum은 went와 함께 하나의 구성소를 이루어야 한다.
a. There is a cat under the table.
b. *There is the cat under the table.
c. ?? A cat is under the table.
a. He seems young. (심층구조: ___ seems he to be young)
=> it seems that he is young.
b. He looks young. (심층구조: He looks young)
=> *It looks that he is young.
[답] 동사 seem의 경우 that he is young의 that절을 논항으로 취하는 것이 가능한 반면에, 동사 look은 he와 young을 각각 개별 논항으로 취하게 된다. It looks that he is young으로 문장을 변환할 경우 비문이 된다.
a. The room is down.
b. School is over.
c. This letter is for you.
d. The meeting is on Monday.
[답] Quirk et al(1985: 721)에서는 밑줄친 down, over, for you, on Monday는 문장의 수의적인 요소인 부사구로 보지 않고 필수적인 부가어(Adjunct)로 간주하여 주어의 상태나 동작을 서술하는 기능을 하는 것으로 설명한다.
a. He insisted that she didn't smoke.
b. He insisted that she not smoke.
a. He treats us kindly.
b. The hostess showed me to the door.
c. He saw Mary home.
d. John put the car in the garage.
a. The work cost him his wife.
b. She forgave him his thoughtless remarks
c. I don't envy you your journey in this bad weather.
[답] 동사 cost, forgive, envy는 간접목적어(I.O)와 직접목적어(D.O)를 취하는 동사로 S+V+I.O+D.O 문형을 생성한다.
a. *John gave Mary it.
b. John gave it to Mary.
a. John gave a book to the boy.
b. John gave the boy a book.
a. He wanted the doctor to examine his wife.
b. He asked the doctor to examine his wife.
c. He expected the doctor to examine his wife.
a. He wanted the doctor to examine his wife. (S V O)
=> *The doctor was wanted to examine his wife by him.
b. He asked the doctor to examine his wife. (S V IO DO)
=> The doctor was asked to examine his wife by him.
(the doctor가 목적어가 됨)
=> He asked the doctor that he examine his wife.
(that he examine his wife.
c. He expected the doctor to examine his wife. (S V O C)
=> The doctor was expected to examine his wife by him.
(the doctor가 목적어가 됨)
=> *He expected the doctor that he would examine his wife.
(that he examine his wife.
cf. He expected that he would examine his wife. (S V O)
a. The next chapter deals with verbs.
b. He stood near the tree.
a. The next chapter deals with verbs.
=> Verbs are dealt with in the next chapter.
b. He stood near the tree.
=> *The tree was stood near by him.
a. They CALLED on the man.
b. They called UP the man.
(2)음운론적 입장: 전치사수반동사인 called on의 주강세는 동사 called에 주어지지만, 구동사인 called up의 주강세는 up에 주어진다.
I have nothing of which to complain.
[답] 위 문장은 ‘I have nothing of which I must complain.’ 또는 ‘I have nothing which I must complain of.’ (참고로 *I have nothing which to complain of. 즉 ‘I have nothing to complain of.’
a. The writing of the letters is a good exercise in English composition.
b. He was awaked by an insistent tapping on his door.
c. There have been indiscriminate bombings and shootings.
a. The writing of the letters is a good exercise in English composition.
b. He was awaked by an insistent tapping on his door.
c. There have been indiscriminate bombings and shootings.
a. He began reading slowly and in a clear voice.
b. I would appreciate your keeping it a secret.
c. I object to being treated like a child.
d. He was suspected of having embezzled large sums of money.

b. I would appreciate your keeping it a secret.
c. I object to being treated like a child.
d. He was suspected of having embezzled large sums of money.
a. I promise to pay it back by the end of this month.
b. I name this ship Pan-Korea.
c. I warn you again.
d. We accept your offer.
e. I order you to come here.
a. *I'm knowing him.
b. *Know the language.
c. *What I did was to know the language.
d. *I persuaded him to know the language.
e. *I only know the language reluctantly.
[답] 상태동사(stative verbs)는 (a)의 진행형, (b)이 명령문에 사용될 수 없으며 (c)의 What I do is...
<I warn you.>
a. I DO warn you.
b. I HAVE warned you.
c. You MUST warn him.
a. I'm surprised that you should have been so foolish.
b. It is strange that he should refuse to see her.
c. It seemed incredible that he should be the same man I knew twenty years ago.

b. When I was a child, I used to/*would like candy.
(2) a. There used to/*would be a house there.
b. A tall building used to/*would stand there.
c. It used to/*would be said that ...
[답] 첫째, would는 반복이 가능하고 주어의 의지에 따라 언제든지 중단이 가능한 동사(sing, go, make, get up, write 등)와 결합하고, used to는 모든 동사와 결합한다. 둘째, would는 유생명사(animate noun)만을 주어로 삼고, used to는 무생명사도 가능하다.

(1) a. He was buried by his wife.
b. He is buried in Mangwoo-ri.

a. This book of Christie's is exciting.
b. Any friend of my son's is welcome.
c. It is no business of yours.
d. Which house of your neighbour's was burnt down.
a. This book of Christie's is exciting.
=> *This Christie's book isexciting.
b. Any friend of my son's is welcome.
=> *Any my son's friend is welcome.
c. It is no business of yours.
=> *It is no your business.
d. Which house of your neighbour's was burnt down?
=> *Which your neighbour's house was burnt down?
