* of + 명사 = 형용사적인 의미; of one mind = like-minded 한마음 상태인,
* 비교 of use=useful 유용한, be of age; means that someone has reached adulthood.
Sympathize /with each other 서로에게 동정을 표현하다로 쓰므로 with 가 없으면 타동사로 되므로 안 됨
* sympathize : to feel sorry for someone who is in a bad situation, to feel sympathy for someone 동정하다

9 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults /when people insult you.
Instead, pay them back /with a blessing.
That is [what God has called you to do], and he will grant [you] [his blessing].
9 Don’t repay 되갚지 마라 evil for evil 악을 악으로.
Don’t retaliate 보복하지 마라 with insults 모욕으로 when 그때 people 사람들이 insult 모욕할 때 you 너희를.
Instead 대신에, pay 되갚으라 them back 그들에게 with a blessing 축복으로.
That 그것이 is what 그 어떤 것이다 God 하나님께서 has called 부르셔서 you 너희가 to do 하도록 하신,
and he 그분께서 will grant 부여할 것이다 you 너희에게 his blessing 그분의 축복을.
* for; with the object or purpose of
* repay evil for evil ; to do exactly what someone did to you 악에는 악으로 (eye for eye 눈은 눈으로)
* 타동사구 pay back = repay
* 보어인 의문사절/명사절; what God has called you to do 접속사/의문사는 do 의 목적 역할도 대신하는 대명사임
* 5 형식 called you to do what 에서 목적인 you 가 목보인 부정사 to do 의 동작을 한다는 의미로 5 형식으로 하나
* 4 형식 grant you his blessing에서는 간/직목 공식인 간목≠직묵 you his≠blessing이 성립하므로 4형식
* VOICE
9 not paying back 되갚지 말고 evil with evil 악을 악으로 or insult with insult 모욕을 모욕으로,
but 그러나 repaying 되갚으면서 the bad 불량자에게 with a blessing 축복으로.
It 그건 was this 이것이었다 (that) 그건 you 너희가 were called 불림받은 to do 하기로,
so that 그래서 you 너희가 might inherit 상속받도록 a blessing 한 축복을.
* 8절의 em dash 뒤에 쓰인 분사구고 분사구의 동작자/주체는 주어인 all of you 이므로 주어수식
즉 주어가 준동작인 not paying, but repaying 을 하는 상태로 show 라는 본동작을 한다는 게 구조적인 의미다
* 강조용법 it~that; that절인 you were called to do this 에서 this 가 강조되어 앞으로 나감
10 For the Scriptures say,
“If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days,
keep your tongue /from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.
10 For 왜냐면 the Scriptures 성경이 say 말하기에,
“If 만약 you 너희가 want 원하면 to enjoy 누리고 life 삶을 and see 보기를 many happy days 많은 행복한 날들을,
keep 막아라 your tongue 너희 혀를 from speaking evil 악을 말하는 것으로부터
and your lips 너희 입술이 from telling lies 거짓말하는 것으로부터.
* 숙어 keep from; to prevent or stop (someone or something) from doing or experiencing (something)
He witnessed a talking animal. ( a talking animal = an animal which talks)
to begin talking about animal welfare하면 talking은 목적 역할이므로 동명사가 됨
* VOICE

Don’t tell 말하지 마라 lies 거짓말을 or spread 퍼뜨리지 마라 gossip 험담을 or talk 말하지 마라
/about improper things 부적절한 일들을.
능동문으로 하면 주어가 누군지 모르므로 somebody wrote it in the psalms.
* 목적/명사역할 부정사구 to live a good, long time 준타동사+목적/명사구(형,형+명)
* 부역 명사구 a good, long time 기간을 설명함 ('오랜 시간을 살다' 하면 한글로는 매끈하나 영어는 다름)
* a good long/informal. : a very long
* 형용사careful 수식으로 쓰인 의문사절; /what you say
Don’t tell [lies] or (Don’t) spread [gossip] or (Don’t) talk /about improper things
11 Turn away /from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work /to maintain it.
11 Turn away 돌아서라 from evil 악으로부터 and do 행하라 good 선을.

if 만약 you 너희가 are eager 열망한다면 to do good 선한 일 하려고?
you do not want to harm him.
you do not want to harm whom.
whom do you not want to harm?
* 보어인 형용사구; eager to do good 형+부/부정사구

If you heat ice, it melts.

If you had done good, no one would have harmed you.
do eagerly good으로 하면 eagerly는 good 수식으로 보여 어색함
14 But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it.
So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats.
14 But 그러나 even if 만약 you 너희가 suffer 고난당하기 조차 한다면 for doing 행함으로 what is right 옳은 그것을,
God 하나님께서 will reward 상주실 것이다 you 너희를 for it 그로 인해서.
So 그러므로 don’t worry 걱정하거나 or be afraid 두려워마라 of their threats 그들의 협박에 대해.
* 전목인 동명사구; doing [what is right] 준타동사+목적/의문사절/명사절
* 보어인 형용사구 afraid of their threats 형+부/전구
형용사를 수식하는 품사는 부사이므로 대용 부사인 전구나 부정사구 혹은 절도 쓰일 수 있음;
afraid of~, afraid to see~, afraid that~
* VOICE

1 In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands.
3
Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News,
3
your godly lives will speak /to them without any words. They will be won over
vi 3
2 by observing your pure and reverent lives.
* win someone over.
to succeed in getting someone's support or agreement, esp. when the person was previously opposed to you:
1-2 In the same way, wives, you should patiently accept the authority of your husbands.
3
This is so that even if they don’t obey God’s word,
3
as they observe your pure respectful behavior, they may be persuaded /without a word by the way you live.
3 3
3 Don’t be concerned /about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes.
b c
3 Don’t focus /on decorating your exterior by doing your hair or putting on fancy jewelry or wearing fashionable clothes;
vi
4 You should clothe yourselves /instead /with the beauty //that comes from within,
3 vi
the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.
4 let your adornment [be what’s inside]—the real you,
5
the lasting beauty of a gracious and quiet spirit, in which God delights.
vi
5 This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful.
3
They put their trust /in God and accepted the authority of their husbands.
3 3
5 This is how, long ago, [holy women //who put their hope in God] made themselves beautiful:
3 5
by respecting the authority of their husbands.
6 For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him her master.
3 5
You are her daughters /when you do [what is right] /without fear of what your husbands might do.
3 3
6 Consider how Sarah, our mother, obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him “lord,”
3 3 5
and you will be her daughters /as long as you boldly do [what is right] /without fear and without anxiety.
3
7 In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives.
3
Treat your wife with understanding /as you live together.
3 vi
She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life.
Treat her /as you should /so your prayers will not be hindered.
3 3
7 In the same way, husbands, as you live /with your wives, understand the situations () women face /as the weaker vessel.
vi 3 3
Each of you should respect your wife and value her /as an equal heir /in the gracious gift of life.
3 3
Do this /so that nothing will get /in the way of your prayers.
3 vi
8 Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other /as brothers and sisters.
vi 3
Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.
3
8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded and show [sympathy, love, compassion, and humility] to and for each other—
3
9 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate /with insults /when people insult you.
3 vi 3
Instead, pay them back /with a blessing.
3
That is [what God has called you to do], and he will grant you his blessing.
5 4
9 not paying back evil with evil or insult with insult, but repaying the bad with a blessing.
It was this () you were called to do, so that you might inherit a blessing.
5 3
10 For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days,
vi 3 3
keep your tongue /from speaking evil and your lips /from telling lies.
3
10 It is written in the psalms, If you love life and want to live a good, long time,
3 3 3
Then be careful /what you say. Don’t tell lies or spread gossip or talk /about improper things.
3 3 vi
11 Turn away /from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work /to maintain it.
vi 3 3 vi
11 Walk away /from the evil things in the world—just leave them behind, and do [what is right],
vi 3 3
and always seek peace and pursue it.
3 3
12 The eyes of the LORD watch over those //who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers.
3 vi
But the LORD turns his face /against those //who do evil.”
3 3
* watch over; to protect someone and make certain that that person is safe
12 For the Lord watches over the righteous, and His ears are attuned to their prayers.
3 b c
But His face is set against His enemies; He will punish evildoers.
3 3
13 Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good?
3
13 Why would anyone harm you if you eagerly do good?
3 3
14 But even if you suffer /for doing what is right, God will reward you for it.
vi 3
So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats.
vi
14 Even if you should suffer /for doing what is right, you will receive a blessing.
vi 3
Don’t let them frighten you. Don’t be intimidated,
5
15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life.
3
And if someone asks /about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.
vi
16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear.
3 5
Then if people speak /against you,
they will be ashamed /when they see [what a good life you live /because you belong /to Christ].
b c 3 vi vi
15-16 but exalt Him as Lord in your heart. Always be ready to offer a defense, humbly and respectfully,
3
when someone asks [why you live in hope].
3 vi
Keep your conscience clear
5
/so that [those //who ridicule your good conduct in the Anointed and say bad things about you] will be put to shame.
3 3 3
* put someone to shame. 1. to embarrass someone; to make someone ashamed.
17 Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is [what God wants], than to suffer for doing wrong!
vi
17 For if it is the will of God that you suffer,
vi
then it is better to suffer for doing [what is right] /than for doing [what is wrong].
18 Christ suffered /for our sins /once for all time. He never sinned,

but he died /for sinners /to bring you safely home to God.
vi
He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.
3 3
18 The Anointed One suffered for sins /once for all time—the righteous /suffering for the unrighteous—
vi
so that He might bring us to God. Though He died in the flesh, He was made alive again through the Spirit.
3 vi 5
19 So he went and preached to the spirits in prison—
vi vi
19 And in the Spirit, He went and preached /to those spirits /held captive.
20 those //who disobeyed God /long ago /when God waited patiently /while Noah was building his boat.
3 vi 3
Only eight people were saved /from drowning in that terrible flood.
3
20 It was these //who long ago lived in disobedience /while God waited patiently as Noah was building the ark.
vi vi 3
At that time, only a tiny band—eight people—was spared from the flood.

//that initiates you into salvation.
3
You are saved /not because it cleanses your body of filth
3 3

through the resurrection of Jesus the Anointed, our Liberating King.
