I may have been very stupid, but when I heard that a special class was being formed for backward readers, I silently wondered how many of my classmates had the marvelous gift of being able to read backward. And I was puzzled at the sign: IN CASE OF FIRE, BREAK GLASS. I couldn't understand how breaking the glass was going to help put out the fire. Last summer I found a sign in a public park: PEOPLE WITHOUT DOGS ON A LEASH NOT PERMITTED. I wonder if the officials realized that this might prevent everyone not owning a dog from entering the park? * on a leash 가죽 끈으로 맨 |

So then, not really in the interest of science but more out of plain curiosity, I asked Michael if it was the end of the world and he had to repopulate the planet but he could only choose one life mate, who would it be, Xena or Buffy? After telling me how *weird I was for thinking of something like that, Michael chose Buffy, and then Lilly asked me if I had to choose between Harrison ford or George Clooney who would it be, and I said Harrison Ford even though he's so old, but the Harrison Ford from Indiana Jones, not Star Wars, and then Lilly said she'd choose Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan in those Tom Clancy movies, and then Michael goes, "What would you choose, Harrison Ford or Leonardo DiCaprio?" and we both chose Harrison Ford because Leo is so *passe, and then he went, "Who would you choose, Harrison Ford or Josh Richter?" and Lilly said Harrison Ford, because he used to be a carpenter, and if it was the end of the world he could build her a house, but I said Josh because he'd live longer - Harrison is like SIXTY - and be able to give me a hand with the kids. Then Michael asked me if I would put out for Josh Richter, and I had to think about it for a minute. Losing your virginity is a really big step, and you have to do it with the right person or else you could be screwed up for the rest of your life. So after I'd thought about it, I said I would put out for Josh Richter, but only if: 1. We'd been dating for at least a year. 2. He pledged his undying love to me. 3. He took me to see Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and didn't make fun of it. Michael said the first two sounded all right, but if the third one was an example of the kind of boyfriend I expected to get, I'd be a virgin for a long, long time. *passe : no longer fashionable *weird : very strange and unusual

This was the first year Jill had her own corner of the garden to plant whatever she wanted. She loved sweet corn, so she planted sweet corn seeds. Every day the corn seemed to grow more, and Jill worked hard, watering and taking care of her garden. She smiled as she thought about eating hot, buttery ears of corn. By August, the corn had grown far above her head. One day her father said, “Soon you can pick it.” (A) What else could explain it? The dew on the papers made her shorts wet. The dew? Of course, the papers weren’t noisy! When the raccoons walked on the papers the first night, the noise must have scared them away. The second night, the papers were wet so they weren’t noisy anymore. That evening, Jill carefully laid out fresh newspapers. The next day, she and her dad picked corn for dinner. As she bit into a juicy ear, she was glad the raccoons hadn’t realized she had put out last week’s news! (B) The next morning, Jill saw strange animal tracks in the dirt, and several ears of corn had been eaten. Crying, Jill ran to tell her dad. “It must have been raccoons,” he said. “They love sweet corn. Try putting newspapers all the way around the garden and weigh them down with stones.” Jill didn’t see what good the papers would do, but she laid out some newspapers anyways. (C) The next morning, she found no tracks and no missing corn. It worked! “You will have to change the newspapers every day,” her dad said. “The raccoons have read yesterday’s news. They will need new news or they will eat your corn again.” Jill laughed. Raccoons couldn’t read. Besides, it had taken her a long time to lay the papers out the night before. She decided to leave yesterday’s papers. But the next morning, the raccoons had struck again. Jill sat down on the papers and cried. Maybe raccoons really could read.
