Chapter 6: Path of Meditation
(Dhyana-yoga / The Yoga of Meditation)
6-19
As a lamp in a spot sheltered (by Brahman)
from the wind (of desires) does not flicker, this simile is used
for the subdued mind of a yogi practicing meditation on Brahman.
As a lamp in a windless place does not waver,
so the transcendentalist, whose mind is controlled,
remains always steady in his meditation on the transcendent self.
As a lamp placed in a windless spot does not flicker
--to such is compared the yogi of controlled mind,
practising Yoga in the Self (or absorbed in the Yoga of the Self).
COMMENTARY:
This is a beautiful simile which Yogis often quote
when they talk of concentration or one-pointedness of mind.
6-20
When the mind disciplined
by the practice of meditation becomes steady,
one becomes content in the Self by beholding Him with (purified) intellect.
When the mind, restrained by the practice of Yoga,
attains to quietude, and when, seeing the Self by the Self,
he is satisfied in his own Self,
6-21
One feels infinite bliss that is perceivable only through the intellect,
and is beyond the reach of the senses.
After realizing Brahman, one is never separated from absolute reality.
When he (the yogi) feels that infinite bliss
which can be grasped by the (pure) intellect
and which transcends the senses,
and, established wherein he never moves from the Reality,
6-22
After Self-Realization,
one does not regard any other gain superior to Self-Realization.
Established in Self-Realization,
one is not moved even by the greatest calamity.
Which, having obtained, he thinks there is no other gain superior to it;
wherein established, he is not moved even by heavy sorrow,--
Let no man deceive himself.
If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world,
let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
6-23
The (state of) severance of union with sorrow
is known by the name of yoga.
This yoga should be practiced with firm determination and perseverance,
without any mental reservation or doubts.
In the stage of perfection called trance, or samadhi,
one's mind is completely restrained from material mental activities
by practice of yoga.
This perfection is characterized by one's ability to see the self
by the pure mind and to relish and rejoice in the self.
In that joyous state, one is situated in boundless transcendental happiness,
realized through transcendental senses.
Established thus, one never departs from the truth,
and upon gaining this he thinks there is no greater gain.
Being situated in such a position, one is never shaken,
even in the midst of greatest difficulty.
This indeed is actual freedom from all miseries arising from material contact.
Let that be known by the name of Yoga, the severance from union with pain.
This Yoga should be practised
with determination and with an un-desponding mind.
6-24
Totally abandoning all selfish desires,
and completely restraining the senses (from the sense objects) by the intellect;
One should engage oneself in the practice of yoga
with determination and faith and not be deviated from the path.
One should abandon, without exception,
all material desires born of mental speculation
and thus control all the senses on all sides by the mind.
Abandoning without reserve all the desires born of Sankalpa,
and completely restraining the whole group of senses
by the mind from all sides,
COMMENTARY:
The mind is so diplomatic that it keeps certain desires for its secret gratification.
So one should completely abandon all desires without reservation.
6-25
One gradually attains tranquillity of mind
by keeping the mind fully absorbed in the Self
by means of a well-trained (and purified) intellect, and thinking of nothing else.
Gradually, step by step, one should become situated in trance
by means of intelligence sustained by full conviction,
and thus the mind should be fixed on the self alone
and should think of nothing else.
Little by little let him attain to quietude by the intellect held firmly;
having made the mind establish itself in the Self, let him not think of anything.
6-26
Wheresoever this restless and unsteady mind wanders away,
one should (gently) bring it back to the reflection of the Supreme.
From wherever the mind wanders due to its flickering and unsteady nature,
one must certainly withdraw it and bring it back under the control of the self.
From whatever cause the restless, unsteady mind wanders away,
from that let him restrain it and bring it under the control of the Self alone.
6-27
Supreme bliss comes to a Self-realized yogi whose mind is tranquil,
whose desires are under control, and who is free from sin (or faults).
The yogi whose mind is fixed on Me
verily attains the highest perfection of transcendental happiness.
He is beyond the mode of passion, he realizes his qualitative identity
with the Supreme, and thus he is freed from all reactions to past deeds.
Supreme bliss verily comes to this yogi whose mind is quite peaceful,
whose passion is quieted,
who has become Brahman, and who is free from sin.
6-28
Such a sinless yogi, who constantly engages the mind with the Self,
easily enjoys the infinite bliss of contact with Brahman.
Thus the self-controlled yogi, constantly engaged in yoga practice,
becomes free from all material contamination
and achieves the highest stage of perfect happiness
in transcendental loving service to the Lord.
The yogi, always engaging the mind thus (in the practice of Yoga),
freed from sins, easily enjoys the infinite bliss of contact with Brahman
(the Eternal).
6-29
Because of perceiving the (same) Self (abiding) in all beings
and all beings (abiding) in the (same) Self; a yogi,
who is in union with the Self,
sees every-being with an equal eye. (See also 4.35)
A true yogi observes Me in all beings and also sees every being in Me.
Indeed, the self-realized person sees Me,
the same Supreme Lord, everywhere.
With the mind harmonized by Yoga he sees the Self
abiding in all beings and all beings in the Self; he sees the same everywhere.
6-30
Those who see Me in everything and see everything in Me,
are not separated from Me and I am not separated from them.
For one who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me,
I am never lost, nor is he ever lost to Me.
He who sees me everywhere and sees everything in me,
he does not become separated from me nor do I become separated from him.
COMMENTARY:
The Lord describes here the effect of one ness.
6-31
The non-dualists, who adore Me as abiding in all beings,
abide in Me irrespective of their mode of living.
Such a yogi, who engages in the worshipful service of the Supersoul,
knowing that I and the Supersoul are one,
remains always in Me in all circumstances.
He who, being established in unity,
worships me who dwells in all beings,
--that yogi abides in me, whatever may be his mode of living.
6-32 6-33
One is considered the best yogi who regards every being like oneself,
and who can feel the pain and pleasures of others as one's own, O Arjuna.
He is a perfect yogi who, by comparison to his own self,
sees the true equality of all beings,
in both their happiness and their distress, O Arjuna!
He who, through the likeness of the Self, Arjuna,
sees equality everywhere, be it pleasure or pain,
he is regarded as the highest yogi!
is characterized by the equanimity (of mind),
but, due to restlessness of mind I do not perceive the steady state of mind.
Arjuna said: O Madhusudana, the system of yoga
which You have summarized appears impractical and unendurable to me,
for the mind is restless and unsteady.
This Yoga of equanimity taught by you, Krishna,
I do not see its steady continuance, because of restlessness (of the mind)!
6-34
Because the mind, indeed, is very unsteady, turbulent, powerful,
and obstinate, O Krishna.
I think restraining the mind is as difficult as restraining the wind.
For the mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong,
O Krsna, and to subdue it, I think, is more difficult than controlling the wind.
The mind verily is restless, turbulent, strong and unyielding, Krishna!
I deem it as difficult to control as to control the wind.
COMMENTARY:
The mind ever changes its point of concentration
from one object to another. So it is always restless.
It is not only restless but also turbulent and impetuous,
strong and obstinate. It produces agitation in the body and in the senses.
That is why the mind is even more difficult to control than to control the wind.
6-35
The Supreme Lord said: Undoubtedly, O Arjuna,
the mind is restless and difficult to restrain, but it is subdued by Abhyaasa
(or constant vigorous spiritual practice with perseverance),
and Vairaagya (or detachment), O Arjuna.
Lord Sri Krsna said: O mighty-armed son of Kunti,
it is undoubtedly very difficult to curb the restless mind,
but it is possible by suitable practice and by detachment.
Undoubtedly, mighty-armed Arjuna,
the mind is difficult to control and restless;
but, by practice and by dispassion it may be restrained!

In My opinion, yoga is difficult for the one whose mind is not subdued.
However, yoga is attainable by the person of subdued mind
by striving through proper means.
For one whose mind is unbridled, self-realization is difficult work.
But he whose mind is controlled and who strives
by appropriate means is assured of success. That is My opinion.
I think that Yoga is hard to be attained by one of uncontrolled self,
but the self~controlled and striving one attains to it by the (proper) means.
