Haeundae Hot Springs, where you can peel off your heart!
“I don't know how stingy it was at first. I thought it was peeling off a layer of my skin! But afterwards, I felt as buoyant as a balloon!”
This was the refreshing take of an international lady, experiencing Korea's one-of-a-kind bath culture, Ttaemiliㅡscrub off dead skin. It's fast becoming the must-do for tourists.
Haeundae Hot Springs is a historic landmark. Records even state that Queen Jinseong stopped by in the 9th century to freshen up and treat her skin woes. Until the 60s, this place was hotter than Haeundae Beach. The beach has summers, but the springs are a year-round party!
Haeundae Hot Springs got its public makeover during the Japanese colonial period. Thanks to our counterparts in Dongnae, who paved the way for hot spring vacations and even built a light rail. Haeundae caught up later due to improved public access via the Donghae Nambu Line train (Busanjin to Haeundae Station) in 1935.
The map above (see notice map), from the 1940s Japanese occupation era, marks both Dongnae and Haeundae Hot Springs. Dongnae flaunts 7 hot spring baths, including a hot spring hotel, while Haeundae features a modest 5.
The Haeundae Hotspring tradition is still alive and kicking. Foreigners looking to shed the old and embrace the new can head to either the Haeundae Hot Spring Center or the Centum Spa in Shinsegae Department Store.
The Centum Spa is a foreigner's favorite, and Haeundae Hot Spring Center is a local's delight. The choice is as yours as the dirt you'll leave behind. Try this service once. Shed the grime in your soul and you'll feel reborn as Venus herself! As luminous as Botticelli's Venus in ‘The Birth of Venus’.
