One of the most fascinating fragments in music history
MOZART'S REQUIEM |
A new version by Howard Arman
|
English conductor and composer Howard Arman has presented a new completed version of Mozart's Requiem. He is guided by the typical characteristics of Mozart's compositional style which reflect his genius: his technical perfection, his constant search for new ways to deal with every situation and his concise treatment of the text with extremely rich harmonies. Arman reverts to the Süßmayr version for the movements which Mozart did not contribute (from the Sanctus to the Communio).
The new version has already proved its worth. The world premiere with the Bavarian Radio Choir was enthusiastically received by audiences and the press – and celebrated as a scholarly, completely new take on Mozart's masterpiece. |
INTERVIEWHoward Arman on his editorial decisions
Carus chief editor Dr. Uwe Wolf spoke to Howard Arman on camera about his new completion of Mozart's Requiem. "Another version?" you might think at first, for alongside the traditional Süßmayr version there is a whole range of other versions available – including from Carus. Howard Arman talks about his motivations, his editorial decisions – and his approach to Süßmayr. Enjoy finding out more!

Who wrote what in Mozart's Requiem? Our infographic (PDF) shows very clearly which people were involved in which parts of the work. In addition to the new completed version by Howard Arman, we also take into account other current editions. Our special thanks go to Dr Ulrich Leisinger for his academic advice on these questions. |

A highlight of English choral music
|
Purcell’s magnificent music, which features a huge range of tonal color and form, offers delightful parts for a variety of solo, ensemble, and choral settings. With its richly expressive palette, the Ode to St. Cecilia is an extremely rewarding work by the “Orpheus Britannicus”, as Purcell was admiringly called by contemporaries.
- Festive, rousing ode to music
- Highlight of the "choral ode" genre in the 17th century

CROSSOVER |
John Høybye: Hope. Easter music
|
Danish composer John Høybye enjoys great acclaim at home and abroad, not just for his music but also for his work as a (choral) conductor and arranger. Presenting a medium level of difficulty, Hope. Easter Music is suitable for a good amateur choir. The mix of a beautiful choral sound and rhythmic intensity in jazz-inspired phrases is “trademark Høybye”. A recording with the renowned chamber choir Ars Nova Copenhagen makes it easier to get to know and rehearse this exciting work. |

PRACTICE APP CARUS MUSIC |
Mendelssohn: The First Walpurgis Night
|
Goethe’s dramatic ballad The First Walpurgis Night inspired Mendelssohn to write a magnificent and vivid portrayal of the conflict between an old heathen community and the new aspirations of Christianization, between belief and superstition on both sides. Goethe's text is not without its challenges for the singers, especially in the chorus of the druid guardians "Kommt mit Zacken und mit Gabeln". If you want to take part in this wild ride, you should have practised well before the rehearsal! We recommend our new work in the practice app carus music, the Choir Coach! Of course, the vocal score, the full score and all performance materials are also available from us. Carus Choir Coach (audio only) in preparation: A separate CD (MP3) or download album with all choir parts will be available for every vocal range. |
