Six Disturbing Ingredients Found In Most Everyday Foods There are a lot of gross and disturbing things in everyday foods. Otto Von Bismarck, the politician who once said, “If you like laws and sausages, you should never watch either one being made,” knew all too well what he was talking about. Unfortunately, disgusting foods are very common in most grocery stores. Packaged food ingredient lists are full of indecipherable words, scary additives and toxic chemicals. And sadly in many cases, the GMA and dozens of food and beverage corporations spend countless millions to keep toxic additives and disease-promoting food packaging off of labels, making the consumer’s job harder than ever. GMOs
Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. GMOs have never been tested for safety by the FDA because of a 20-year-old policy that leaves it up to the biotech companies to determine the safety of genetically modified foods. All other developed countries require safety testing for genetically modified ingredients but the government agency in charge of protecting the U.S. food supply allow biotech companies, who are making billions in profits off GMOs, conduct their own “voluntary safety consultations.” A growing body of research and scientific studies are connecting GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and a grotesque violation of farmer and consumer rights. Approximately 90% of U.S. corn and soy bean crops are genetically modified. A derivative of one or both is usually the first ingredient listed on most packaged foods but most Americans don’t realize they are partaking in the largest science experiment in the history of mankind. GMOs have been linked to many serious, adverse health conditions including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. Glyphosate Roundup is so prevalently used around homes and on farms that it’s now being detected in streams, the air, and even rain. Because it’s a systemic herbicide, it’s actually taken up inside the plant…meaning we eat it. Yep, it’s legally allowed in our food, and in an amount that worries scientists. It’s found in most nonorganic packaged foods because most contain corn- or soy-derived ingredients, the crops that are most often heavily doused with Roundup. Glyphosate has been linked to obesity, learning disabilities, birth defects, infertility, and potentially irreversible metabolic damage. Flame Retardant For decades, the food industry has been adding it to certain sodas, juices, and sports drinks, including Mountain Dew, Fanta Orange, Sunkist Pineapple, and some Powerade flavors. Scientists have linked too much BVO to bromide poisoning symptoms like skin lesions, memory loss, and nerve disorders. In one study, researchers tested 36 various food items such as meats, fish, and peanut butter. Fifteen of the 36 food samples tested had detectable levels of hexabromocyclododecane, or HBCD, says researcher Arnold Schecter, MD, MPH, professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Dallas. The use of these chemicals in everyday foods adds to growing evidence that our food supply is full of unwanted chemicals, including flame retardants. This research adds to concerns about a ubiquitous class of poorly regulated chemicals that, according to growing evidence, may be harmful to our health, the environment and wildlife. Paint Chemicals Commonly used in paints and sunscreens, big food corporations add it to lots of things we eat, too, including processed salad dressing, coffee creamers, icing and hundreds of products to make dingy, overly processed items appear whiter. “White has long been the symbolic color of ‘clean,’” explains a food industry insider. “Funny, when you use real food, you don’t need any of these crazy additives—I think I prefer the real deal.” Concerns have arisen from studies that have pointed to titanium dioxide as a carcinogen and photocatalyst, creating worry for consumers. Material Safety Data Sheet which list potential adverse effects to chemicals states that titanium dioxide can cause lung fibrosis. Even with these concerns, titanium dioxide is listed as a safe pigment, with no known adverse effects when used in cosmetics, and approved by the FDA when 99% pure. It is not listed as a carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen, comedogen, toxin or as a trigger for contact dermatitis. Flesh-eating Bacteria Grocery store meats are commonly infused with veterinary medicines, heavy metals, and staph bacteria, including the hard-to-kill, potentially lethal MRSA strain. MRSA kills about 19,000 people a year in America—that’s more annual deaths than from AIDS in the U.S. Purchasing grass-fed meat and eggs from organic farmers is a more sustainable choice. The New York Times reported that the FDA is on the brink of ending the practice of routine antibiotic administration to feed animals. The basis for the pending FDA action is researchindicating that antibiotic dosing of feed animals is probably a greater contributor to the global burden of antimicrobial-resistant germs than is the use of such drugs in hospitals, and likely, a far greater contributor. The FDA’s looming action seems not only logical and warranted, but long overdue. Growth Hormones The FDA and a joint committee of the Food and Agricultural Organization and World Health Organization (FAO/WHO) state that the amount of these hormones that make it into food products is safe for eating. Hormones and steroids are given to livestock to help improve the production of dairy and beef cattle. Some hormones that may be used in dairy cows include: -Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbGH)— to promote milk production (may also see it as bovine somatotropin [BST]) Beef cattle are often given steroid additives to increase growth and development. Common steroids include: -Natural steroids like estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone. According to the European Union’s Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures Relating to Public Health (SCVPH), the use of natural and artificial growth hormones in beef production pose a potential risk to human health. These hormones include three that are naturally occurring – Oestradiol, Progesterone and Testosterone – and three that are synthetic – Zeranol, Trenbolone, and Melengestrol. When hormones are injected into cattle, some naturally occurring hormone levels increase 7 to 20 times. The committee determined that“no acceptable daily intake could be established for any of these hormones.” The Committee also questioned whether hormone residues in the meat of growth enhanced animals can disrupt human hormone balance, causing developmental problems, interfering with the reproductive system, and even leading to the development of breast, prostate and colon cancers. Children, pregnant women, and developing embryos are thought to be most susceptible to negative health effects from added hormones. For example, hormone residues in beef have been examined as a cause of lower sperm counts in boys. The use of rBGH in dairy cows was linked in one study to increases in human twin and triplet births. |
