LESSON 1.
Mapping Your Future
When we have to do something day in and day out, it becomes a tiresome routine. Going to school may seem to be one of those routines in your life. After you have spent over ten years in the classroom, you may ask, “Why do I have to go to school?" When you were younger, your parents probably answered, “because you have to. Everyone does.” Now as an older and more serious student who demands more reasonable answers, you realize that it is a very profound question and that you must answer it for yourself.
* tiresome 따분한, 지겨운, 성가신
* routine 늘 하는 일, 정해진 순서
* demand 요구하다, 요청하다
* reasonable 정당한, 합리적인
* profound 심오한, 뜻 깊은
* day in and day out 매일(=everyday)
* Going to school이 하나의 주어처럼 사용되며, 이때 going은 동명사로 ~에 가기 또는 ~에 가는 것이라고 해석한다.
At school, you are expected to learn a lot of information and
facts about specific subjects such as mathematics, language, and
science. Teachers assign homework, require classroom projects,
and give out tests on these and other subjects. Going through the
routine of the school system, you may wonder what purpose it
serves. What value do these classroom lessons have for you?
* be expect to ~할 것이 기대되어지다, 예정이다
* amount 양, 액수
* specific 특정한, 구체적인
* assign 부여하다, 할당하다
* give out ~을 나누어 주다. 분배하다
* go through ~을 통과하다, 겪다
* serve a purpose ~을 위해 도움이 되다
* information은 셀 수 없는 명사로 복수형을 쓸 수 없고 언제나 단수형으로만 쓰인다
First and foremost, the formal education you receive at school
gives you a wide base of knowledge in many different subjects. In
language class, you learn to read, write, and communicate
obviously and reasonably. Lessons in analyzing complicated
readings and grammatical rules may help you to express yourself
properly and make yourself understood. Then, what about all
those dates, facts, and names of people and places you learned in
history class? Historical facts help you to understand why
important events occur and what their consequences are. As the
saying goes, “Those who do not learn from history are
doomed to repeat it.”
* foremost 첫번째의, 주요한
* formal 공식적인, 격식을 차린
* education 교육
* analyze 분석하다, 검토하다
* doom 운명짓다
* first and foremost 무엇보다도, 맨 먼저
* make oneself undestood 의사 소통을 하다(=to communication)
In math class, you have been learning to perform arithmetic operation and exercise for many years. Mathematics may seem complex and unimportant to you, but it is basic to many areas of life. Scientific experiments may require that you observe and record very small changes, but they lead to answer to question about the forces of the larger physical world. In music or art class, you might discover your own talents or even consider a musical or artistic career.
* arithmetic 산수의, 산술상의
* operation 실험, 기능, 작용
* experiment 시도, 실험
* career 경력, 생애의 직업
* as the saying goes 속담에 있듯이
* lead~ to.. ~를 ..로 이끌다
* those는 일반적인 사람을 가리키는 말로 people로 바꿔 쓸 수 있으며, be doomde to +동사는 결국 ~할 운명이되다라는 뜻이다
Another important reason why we go to school to learn is that
learning can't take place alone. It occurs through interaction with
other people. You have many chances to share your thoughts with
others and listen to theirs. When you listen to others, you can
understand different ways of thinking. You can form better
opinions and be more sure of your conclusions.
* interaction 상호작용
* conclusion 결론, 결말
* share ~ with.. ~를 ...와 나누다
* reach a conclusion 결론에 이르다
* can form ~ and (can) be more sure~ 의 형태이며 sure의 비교급으로는 more sure 혹은 surer의 형태가 모두 쓰인다
In a school environment, you learn about forming and maintaining relationship as well. You learn how to get along with others and develop your own sensitivity and awareness. These are valuable traits that you will need throughout your life. When you share similar experiences in the classroom, you make close friends and lasting relationship with your classmates. They will be an important part of your life now and later.
*sensitivity 민감, 감수성
* trait 특징, 특색
* as well 또한
* get along (with) ~와 잘 지내다
As you go through school, you also become more
responsible and independent. Making sure to complete and hand in
homework, working together on group projects, and studying for
tests all help you to become more mature. You gradually learn to
map your own future. As you get older, you depend less on your
parents and teachers to help you make decisions. You make
discoveries about yourself and become a thinking individual. You
are better able to analyze and solve problems, whether they are
your own personal problems or larger social problems. Albert
Einstein said, “The true purpose of education is to train the mind
to think, and for that reason it is priceless.”
* decision 결심, 결단
* discovery 발견
* individual 개인
* priceless 아주 귀중한
* make sure 확인하다, 다짐하다
* hand in 제출하다
* make a decision 결심을 하다
*As 는 ~함에 따라[추이]/~하는 동안의 뜻으로 해석한다
Today's society is changing at a fast pace, and it is not easy to
keep up with all the trends in this increasingly technological world.
If you have a solid background in education, however, you will
be able to adjust to changes in society more effectively. School
offers a basic education that everyone should have. It is up to you
what you do with it. Just remember that you need stepping stones
for a successful life, and school education can provide them for
you.
* pace 걸음. 보조
* trend 경향, 추세, 유행
* solid 단단한, 실속있는, 고체의
* successful 성공한, 성대한
* at a pace ~한 발걸음으로
* keep up with ~을 따라 잡다
* adjust to ~을 맞추다, 부합시키다
* be up to ~의 뜻에 달려있다
* provide A for B는 B에게 A를 제공하다라는 뜻으로 provide B with A 와 같이 쓸 수 있다
LESSON 2.
The Joy of Dancing
Rap music heard coming out of the stereo speakers. The
dancers step to the loud, continuous beat. They jump in the air
and land on their backs. Some of them show off by spinning on the
ground. Their bodies look like human tops, pivoting on their
shoulders, heads, and backs. The crowd also moves to the beat of
the music and becomes absorbed in the powerful movements of
break dance.
* continuous 지속, 연속, 계속적인
* pivot ~를 회전축으로 회전하다
* absorb ~에 빠지다
* by spinning 운 by+동사+~ing 의 형태로 ~함으로써,~를 수단으로 해서라는 의미이다
Many teenagers and young adults enjoy dancing these days. It
gives them a lot of emotional and physical satisfaction. Break
dance, or breaking, to the rap music of hip-hop is one of the
popular dances enjoyed by young people all over the world.
Young people are not the only ones who like to dance. People of
all ages and backgrounds enjoy dancing. The jitterbug, twist, and
disco were popular among past generations. Ballet, ballroom
dance, and many Latin and modern dance have been part of the
cultural and social life of people past and present. Why are people
so attracted to dancing? How did dancing become such a big part
of people's lives?
* emotional 감정의, 정서의, 감정적인
* satisfaction 만족
* ballroom 무도장, 댄스홀
* all over the world 온 세계에서
* people past and present는 people in the pat present에서 도출된 것이다. 이처럼 과거/현재와 같이 대조를 이루는 단어가 연속될 때는 전치사+관사를 생략할 수 있다
As one of the most basic ways of expressing emotions,
dancing has been around as long as human civilization. In primitive
times, dance was an important part of religious life. People danced
to please the gods who they believed controlled nature. Prayers
and dances were offered to the gods to ask for rain to come, for
volcanoes to stop erupting, and for earth quakes to cease. When
people could not understand the destructive forces of nature, they
turned to prayers and dances in ceremonies.
* civilization 문명
* primitive 원시의, 초기의
* religious 종교의, 종교적인
* erupt 분출하다
* cease 멈추다, 그치다
* destructive 파괴적인
* tribe 부족
* be attracted to ~에 마음을 빼앗기다
* turn to ~에 의지하다
* As one of ~에서 As는 ~로서 라는 뜻이며, as long as human civilization은 ~만큼이나 ~한의 뜻으로 해석한다
War dance among tribes were also an important part of early
cultures. Before an important battle, the whole tribe gathered
together. The drummers beat their drums while the dancers
danced in circles to offer encouragement to those going off to
battle. Men built up their courage and chased away their fears by
jumping, stomping ,and skipping in powerful dance.
* ensouragement 격려
* chase 쫓다
* stomp 힘껏 구르다
* chase away 쫓아버리다
* by jumping, stomping, and skipping~은 by+동사~ing 구문으로 이때 by의 의미는 through means of이며 ~함으로써라고 해석한다
People also overcame their fear of disease through dance. From
the earliest times, people believed in the magical powers of
dancing. In African cultures, witch doctors danced with wild
gestures to free sick people from the evil spirits causing the
sickness. In Europe in the Middle Ages, people even danced to
avoid the plague. An Italian dance called the tarantella was
considered a cure for a poisonous spider bite.
* overcome 이기다, 극복하다
* poisonous 유독한
* free~ from...~을 ...로 부터 자유롭게 하다
* believe in+사람/사물은 ~의 존재/가치를 믿다라는 의미이다
Even today, dancing is believed to be a kind of therapy. It is
thought to help maintain balance, flexibility, and even cure some
illnesses.
People also danced when times were good. Folk dances were
performed to celebrate harvests and good fortune. Dances
thanked the gods for generous rains and plentiful crops. Everyone
joined in the dancing, and a joyful mood spread throughout the
whole community.
* therapy 치료, 요법
* flexibility 유연성
* plentiful 많은
* join in 참가하다
* thanked the gods for generous rains~는 thank A for B의 구문으로 A에게 B에 대한 감사하다라는 뜻이다
As societies developed, dancing became more of a social
activity. In many social gatherings, dancing helps to break the ice.
It also gives people an opportunity to improve their social skills,
and a chance to develop friendship. Just as dancing is an important
part of many Western societies, it also plays an important part in
portraying Korean culture and people. For example, the Korean
mask dance called talchum provides a gathering where the
audience participate with the performers to express their
emotions.
* gethering 모임
* opportunity 기회
* portray 표현하다, 그리다, 묘사하다
* participate 참가하다, 참여하다
* play a part 역할을 하다
* as societies developed, ~에서 As는 ~함에따라,~할수록이라는 뜻이다
Today, people want to express themselves more freely. And dancing is one of the ways they can do this. There are so many different kinds of dances to choose from. People can dance their choice of dance to their choice of music. Whether it is brake dance, jazz dance or a more formal social dance, dancing can be very entertaining and fulfilling. It is a joy to dance and a wonder to watch. Whether you dance professionally or just for fun, it can open up a wonderful, new world.
* profesional 직업적인, 전문의
* whether ~ or ...~이든지 ...이든지 간에
* 일반적으로 joy(기쁨)나 wonder(경이로움)는 추상 명사로 셀 수 없고 a/an과 함께 쓸 수도 없다
LESSON 3.
The Ride of Your Life
Do you get thrill out of being taken up high in the air and then
thrown down toward the ground at dangerous speeds? If you love
scary rides, go to the nearest amusement park and check out the
newest rides. You might think the most frightening and thrilling
ride would be the roller coaster, but it might not be. Get ready
to try the rides that have been giving people unexpected thrills.
* amusement 재미, 오락
* get/be ready to + 동사 또는 get/be ready for +명사의 구문으로 ~할 준비를하다 라는 뜻이다
In order to satisfy people who are always demanding
faster and more exciting rides, amusement parks now have
simulator rides.
These rides simulate fantastic places and things. You will
become so absorbed in them that you will be tricked into thinking
that what you are experiencing is real. When you get into the seat
of a simulator ride, you find yourself surrounded by a larger
screen. The screen is so wide that it covers nearly your entire
field of vision. Objects fly around you and directly at you. You
may think that you are racing against other spacecrafts or
underwater vehicles at incredible speeds.
* simular 모의 실험 기구
* vehicle 탈것, 운반 수단
* be adsorbed in ~에 열중하다
* be trick into ~을 속아서 ~하게하다
* so + 형용사 +that 주어 + 동사 구문으로 너무 ~해서 ~하게 되다와 같은 결과적인 뜻으로 해석한다
How does the simulator ride play tricks on your senses? Two
factors make it possible: vision and motion.
The first step that the body takes toward processing
information involves the eyes. They are the most sensitive part of
the human body. They pick up information about the environment
that surrounds a person and then send it to the brain. But how do
the eyes tell you that you and the objects around you are moving
fast?
* vision 시각, 전망
* process 절차, 경과
* pick up 얻다, 획득하다
A simple trick played on your eyes involves persistence of vision.
This is what makes you think objects are in motion. When you see
a picture of moving objects on a screen, you are actually seeing
many pictures of the same object shown one right after another. It
is the same concept as watching a movie.
* sensitive 민감한, 섬세한
* persistence 지속성, 고집
* concept 개념, 관념
* one right after another 차례 차례, 잇달아
The simulator ride also uses your peripheral vision, which is what you see out of the corners of your eyes. When you're in a car, your sense of how fast you're going depends on what you see from the sides of the car. If objects are passing by quickly, then you believe your car is also moving quickly. The simulator seat is programmed to move along with peripheral pictures. This creates the illusion that you are moving at a great speed.
* peripheral 주위의, 말초신경의
* illusion 환상, 착각
* out of the corner of one's eye 눈의 한쪽 구석에서
The newest simulator rides challenge the human eye's depth
perception. Sixty years ago, the Disney studios developed a way to
make pictures look more realistic. Several layers of drawings on
celluloid were placed at different distances and moved to the right
and left. Seeing the objects both close up and far away, the eyes
perceive that the characters are moving in different directions at
different depths. This invention resulted in the 3D computer
graphics which we are familiar with today.
* challenge 도전. ~에 도전하다
* depth 심도, 깊이, 난해성
* perception 지각, 직관, 이해
* layer 층. 겹쳐쌓음
* celluloid 필름
* perceive 인지하다, ~을 알아채다
* invention 발명, 고안
* result in ~결과로 되다
* a way to make ~에서 to make 이하는 a way를 수식하는 형용사적 용법의 부정사이다.
Just seeing, however, is not enough to make you think you are
moving. If you are standing still, you will not get the thrill of the
ride. In order to stimulate the senses into perceiving movement,
the rides are set on a base that moves in all different directions.
Your seat, fixed to the base, will heave up and down, back and

In addition to this illusion, simulator rides make your body react to the sudden motions and images. While the seat is throwing you around, the nerves in your ear are sending signals to your brain. Those signals tell your body to adjust to the sudden movements of the seat. Your body will be moving forward, backward, and sideways to try to maintain balance. This is your body's natural defense against change. The quick changes in the direction of the base force your body to react to the movement.

* nerve 신경, 용기
* defense 방어, 방위, 수비
* to try to maintain balance는 균형을 잡기 위해라는 뜻으로 to부정사의 부사적 용법 중 목적을 나타낸다
For example, let's suppose you are falling from a cliff. You will probably stretch out your arms to push yourself backward. The ride simulates this experience by tilting the base of the seat downward.
