Lesson 4. Nam June Paik and His Art
Read & Think
World-famous visual artist Nam June Paik is know as the 'father of video art.' Before Pak, no one had used video as a medium for visual art. His work usually shows unusual displays of video through brief, quickly changing images on television screens. Born in Seoul, Korea in 1932, Nam June Paik studied music, history, and art in Japan and Germany. After finishing his graduate studies in Germany, Paik went to on the New York where be became very active in the art scene.

During the 1960s, in New York, Paik started experimenting with televison. From his work in television. From his work in television he developed a strong interest in video art. He was among the first artists to use television as a medium for art. Since then his word has explored the future of electronic media.

Interviewer : Why did you turn to video? Nam June Paik : I turned to video because it allowed me to make art more quickly. Video is a very open medium, and if you want to express something quickly through art, video is good. Interviewer : In the 1980s you were among the first artists to use satellites for worldwide performances. Today this seems like an early example of net art.

Nam June Paik : That was a very big success. I was working with a lot of stars. It was exciting. Organizing it was the hard part. At that time there were the Olympics in Korea, so we were able to do it. Also, we had friends at all the other TV stations. All these contacts helped me a lot. Interviewer : Your first satellite work "Good Morning, Mr. Orwell" was announced as "Art for 10 million people." Was it important to you to reach as many people as possible with your art?
Organizing it was the hard part. 이 문장의 주어는 organizing it 이고 동사는 was이다.
Nam June Paik : Yes, I want to be popular. I am a communication arti st, so I have to communicate with my audience. Interviewer : But why use satellites in the first place for an art broadcast? Nam June Paik : I wanted to use satellites for high art. I wanted to create high art with new materials. Satellites were traditionally used by the military, and I wanted to use them for other peaceful purposes: performances, dance, music and video art. Interviewer Do you think that this kind of global communication can help bring about world peace?
Nam June Paik : Yes, Satellites can be made into a tool for world peace. Through satellites a conflict becomes a world affair, and receives a lot of sympathy from people all around the world, so it can stop war. Interviewer : Do you consider yourself a sculptor who works with video? Nam June Paik : No. When I have to show my work in a gallery, people can only think in terms of painting or sculpture. I was startled when I saw, 'Sculptu re by Nam June Paik' in Time magazine. I hope this will change. Interviewer : I understand you work with laser now. What attracted you to untilize laser?
어떤 점에 끌려서 레이저를 이용하게 되었습니까? make A into B A를 B로 만들다

Nam June Paik : Laser has a kind of new mystique, a psychological effect on the viewer. Since my stroke I have felt that one part of me is already in another kind of world. Laser has a connection to a more spiritual world. It is a kind of a continuation of the video art. Interviewer : How is your health?
Nam June Paik : Well, I walk one hundred meters every day. I hope I can walk as much as possible before I die. However, don't worry, I will finish a wonderful big show to amaze the world in 2010. Interviewer : What is your daily schedule? Nam June Paik : I get up at 8 o'clock in the morning, and I go to be at 10 at night. I go out for lunch to a restaurant only two blocks away from here. Even though my healthy is poor, my brain works very well, and I get new ideas every day!
~ as possible은 ‘가능한 ~하게’라는 뜻으로 possible 대신에 ‘as mush as I can'으로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다.
We can see from this interview that Nam June Paik is an artist who is in touch with the latest developments in technology. His art both criticizes modern technology, by showing some of its silly aspects, and accepts modern technology as a creative force that can contribute to world peace.

We get up. We eat breakfast. We go to school. We eat lunch. We play soccer. Baseball, basketball or whatever it is we enjoy doing after school. We go home. We eat dinner. We watch television. We go to bed. Most of us spend our free time doing whatever our friends are doing or participating in school sponsored events. It's not very thrilling, is it? How many people do you know who ever break out of this routine? Very few, probably. We all long for a little adventure from time to time but there are some people who really love adventure and seek it out on water, on land, and in the air. More and more thrill seekers are getting in touch with nature and pushing themselves to their physical and mental limits at the same time. They are doing things we would not normally do. Theses experiences include white water rafting, bungee jumping and skydiving. Which of the following would you have the courage to do?
seek out ~을 찾다
get in touch with ~와 접촉하다
Extreme Water Sports White-water rafting, also called wild water racing is a popular 'extreme' sport. It involves racing down fast-flowing, rough streams, trying to avoid crashing into rocks or falling into the water. Participants on their own, or as part of a team, are seated in a kayak, canoe or raft. Life jackets ar a must, as are so-called crash helmets. White-water rafting has been around a long time. it developed from the riding of rapids in small boats and rafts, which was a necessary skill for fishermen, hunters and explorers in the past. Some streams are quite easy to travel down but there are others that should be attempted only if you are willing to risk your life. Some people are!
Another 'extreme' water sport is para-sailing. It involves the use of a parachute, already open, linked by a long rope to a speedboat. The forward movements of the boat lifts and tows the parachute wearer around a lake or ocean. Soaring high through the air, while harnessed to a para-sail, is an amazing experience. The water lading is a lot smoother than skydiving landings. It's exciting!
Extreme Land Sports
Bungee jumping is an increasingly popular 'extreme' sport. It is a real challenge for those who like an adrenaline rush and enjoy facing fear. Participants jump from a height while secured around the ankles by a bungee, which is an elastic cord. Securely fastened to the bungee, you stand on a platform such as a river bridge and look down at the depth below. You then push off, falling and falling. The bungee cord springs your body back just as it seems that you are going to hit the ground or water. It's terrifying but more and more people are jumping into what they call a dream world. It's thrilling!
falling and falling은 ‘and fall and fall'의 뜻으로 계속의 의미를 나타내는 현재분사이다.
A popular 'extreme' winter sport is that of snowboarding. Very much like skiing, snowboarding involves racing down steep icy mountain surfaces at high speeds. Unlike skiers, snow boarders must depend on themselves to keep their balance. They have no ski poles to help them keep upright. The goal is survival without broken bones or bruises. All the equipment you need is warm winter clothing, a snowboard and nerves of steel. A few lessons before you head to really steep slopes are probably a good idea. There are snowboarding events held all over the world, if you dare to try!
Extreme Air Sports Skydiving, also called parachuting, is not for the faint of heart. People who are afraid of heights should not try this. It involves attaching a parachute to your back and jumping out of a slow moving plane about 3,000 meters in the air. Jumpers carry an altimeter that, along with providing information on how quickly you are falling, tells jumpers when to open the chute. Landing on the ground can be rough, and, sometimes, painful. No one minds. The whole experience is really exciting!
the faint of heart는 심장이 약한 사람을 의미한다.
Hot air ballooning is another incredible experience. First, you head to a launch site and watch a ten-story nylon ballon take shape. Then, you get into a small basket attached just below the base of a balloon, and you are off. A gas that is lighter than air lifts the balloon from the ground. The balloon rises up into the air, floating over the city and countryside below. It is peaceful experience once you forget how high up in the air you are. The air is fresh and clear, and you can see forever. While in flight, you can hear the occasional roar of the burners propelling the balloon higher and higher into the air. You land in a completely different place because there is no steering. When you land you are dragged for several meters along the ground and you smash into your fellow participants. It's rough and a little painful. However, the excitement of the experience and the cheer that is given to you once you land, help you forget the pain!
get into ~에 들어가다
float 뜨다, 떠다니다
Which one of these 'extreme' sports would you want to try? Live a little! Feel the fear, and do it anyway!

Read & Think
Do you know how small goals can lead to big accomplishments? There is an old story about a little boy and a baby calf. The boy's father gave his son a baby calf, and instructed the boy to feed and clean the calf every day. On completing these daily chores, the boy had to lift the calf over his head at least once every day. Rain or shine, the boy lifted the calf each day. As the child grew, so did the calf, and as the calf got bigger, the boy got stronger. By the time he was 16 the boy, now a very strong muscular young man with a fine physique, could lift a full-grown bull.

This story deals with a small truth of psychology. If you try to lift a full-grown bull in a day, you will only feel frustrated, and be left with a feeling of failure. Remember success breeds success, and set small, short-term goals for yourself at the outset. You won't expect too much, because you're not spending all of your time and energy trying to achieve impossible goals. You just need to spend some time on a regular basis. Then continuity will be established, and you will succeed in achieving your goals.
There is a similar story in my own life. It is concerned with something my son did for me, and perhaps you are doing the same thing for you parents. One day, while visiting my brother in another city, I was playing tennis with Peter, my ten-year-old son. Ever since he was five, Peter had been my only tennis partner. A group of children, members of a local tennis team, were playing on the next court.

While I was picking up some balls, their coach came up to me, "I don't think we've met before," he said. "Your son plays really well." I realized that the coach was not only praising Peter, but also wanted him to join the club. I said, "We're just visiting here." "Shame," he replied. I told Peter about the coach's comments during the drive back to my brother's house, but I wondered why the coach had praised Peter's game. For the past few years, Peter had been telling me about his rapid progress in school tennis. He told me how he was one of the best players at his school. Then one day, he came home and said, "Dad, I beat the school champion today. I'm now the best player in the school.

"That's great, son," I said. "You'll be beating me soon." Of course, I was delighted to hear that Peter had beaten the school champion, but I didn't really take it very seriously. it seemed to me that the tennis players at his school were not really very good.

Frankly, I hadn't seen much improvement in Peter's game. Oh, he was making far fewer mistakes, and he certainly was hitting the ball harder, but I was still beating him just as easily. Peter had still never beaten me. Some fathers might let their son beat them now and again to encourage him, but I didn't believe in that. If peter were to beat me, he would have to play better than I. That's my fundamental rule.

Then after we returned home from the trip to my brother's, I got a telephone call from an old friend, John, who was visiting town. Six years ago John and I used to play tennis together at least once a week. I invited him to dinner. Over coffee, we started talking about tennis. John had always been a better player than I was and used to beat me regularly. "How about a game tomorrow?" John suggested. "That's exactly what I had in mind," I replied. When I asked, "Do you still play a lot?" he smiled and said, "Every day of the year." "Oh, well, I suppose you'll beat me again," I said. "I'm sure you'll do better this time," John replied. The tennis game the next day was an eye-opener for both of us. I didn't just beat John; I thrashed him. The score was 6-2

Yes, John was able to win only two games. Actually, he was no match for me. At first I thought John was having an off-day, but he insisted that he had played as well as he usually did. "You're a much better player than you used to be ," John said. "How have you gotten so good?"

At first, I couldn't understand it myself. John was an excellent player, but I could beat him without difficulty. Then I figured it out. It was Peter! As his tennis had improved, so had my own. Like the boy who lifted the calf and got stronger every morning, I had gotten better each time I played with Peter. I was still better at tennis than Peter, but to stay that way I had had to improve my own game.

Lesson 7. Semi Complains about Her Sweater
Read & Think
One morning when she put on her favorite sweater, Semi found a big hole at the back. "Oh, no! This old sweater has definitely seen better days. I really need a new one." She asked her mother if she could buy a new sweater. "Okay, but today I'm too busy to go with you," said her mother. "Why don't you go to the department store by yourself and buy one?" "What kind of sweater should I choose, Mom?" asked Semi.

"Take a look at the ads in the magazines. I'm sure you'll find something you like." "Okay, Mom, I will. Actually I have been thinking of something special. I'd like to get a cardigan this time." Semi looked through the magazines and finally she found a design that she really liked. The ad read as follows: Grand Sale! Hurry on down before they're all gone! Beautiful cardigan sweater Thickly knitted, yet lightweight. This traditional in front with bubble blowing fish and undersea flower designs. Made of 100% cotton Regular price: $65.99 Now Only : $32.99

Semi went to the department store in her neighborhood, and found what she was looking for. It was a white cardigan with fish and flower designs in front as shown in the ad. A few days later, she wanted to was her new sweater. First she took a good look at the label. The laber read:
* Machine wash cold
* Delicate cycle wash
* Wash dark colors separately
* Dry flat or tumble dry medium
* Do not twist Sea Flower Sweaters
First she took a good look at the label. ‘보다’라는 의미인 take a look at의 명사 look 앞에 good을 써서 ‘자세히 살펴보다’가 되었다.
Semi read the instructions carefully and put the sweater with other cotton clothes into the washing machine and set the wash dial to delicate. When the washing machine had stopped, she pulled her sweater out of the machine and put it in the dryer and set the dryer to medium. After the dryer had stopped, she was surprised to see that her sweater looked much smaller than before. In a panic, she put it on and to her horror found that it had shrunk. I can't believe it! The label says it's OK to machine was it. How could this happen?

"Oh, dear! Did you check the label carefully?" "Of course, I did. I followed the instructions to the letter. I don't know why this happened." Semi was very upset because it was her new sweater, and now it looked ridiculous on her. Suddenly it occurred to her that she should send a letter of complaint to the company who made the sweater. "I have to find out what's going on here!" That evening Semi logged on to the Internet, found out the company's web site address, and wrote an e-mail to the company.

Dear Sir: Last Friday I bought a cardigan made by your company from K-Mart in my neighborhood. I wore the sweater just once. After washing it in the washing machine, according to the instructions, in cold water on 'delicate wash' and drying it in the dryer on 'medium,' I found that the sweater had shrunk! I can't wear it any more! I don't know why this has happened. I just followed the instructions on the label. Now that I can't wear my sweater any longer, I'd like to have a refund. I hope you will be able to arrange this as soon as possible. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Sincerely yours, Semi

On receiving this reply from the company, Semi felt greatly relieved. The next day she took her shrunken sweater, along with the receipt, to the shop where she had bought it. After listening to what had happened, the salesperson asked Semi, "Would you like a refund or a new sweater?" "Well, actually I'd really like a new one. I still need a cardigan" Sea Flower Sweaters

Semi picked out a different design of the same cardigan. It was patterned with roses this time. She liked the red colored roses. "There you go," said the salesperson as she handed her the new sweater. The price was the same, so she took it home and wore it for a week.
there you go. 는 물건을 건네줄 때 흔히 쓰이는 표현이다. there you are, here you are, here it is와 같은 의미이다.
At the weekend she washed the sweater. This time she read the label even more carefully. She found that the instructions were different from before. "Dry flat or tumble dry low." Noticing the difference, she realized that the previous label had probably been wrong. The label had said, 'Dry flat or tumble dry medium' and she had done exactly that. Maybe that's what caused the sweater to shrink. "Oh, I get it! I see what happened now," thought Semi. After washing the new sweater, she put it in the dryer, which she set to 'low.' When she took it our of the dryer, she was relieved to find it was still the original size!
