Sun Ra, byname of Le Sony’r Ra, original name Herman Blount ,byname Sonny, (born May 22, 1914, Birmingham, Ala., U.S.—died May 30, 1993, Birmingham), American jazz composer and keyboard player who led a free jazz big band known for its innovative instrumentation and the theatricality of its performances.
Sun Ra, who claimed to have been born on the planet Saturn, grew up in Birmingham, studied piano under noted teacher Fess Wheatley, and attended Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College (now University). By the mid-1940s he was living in Chicago and scoring music for nightclub floor shows. In 1946–47 he was apprenticed to swing bandleader-arranger Fletcher Henderson. From the 1950s he led his own bands, the variously constituted Arkestras, which played his own music: an expanded hard bop that included tympani, electric piano, and flute—instruments then rare in jazz. He also was a pioneer of modal jazz settings; among his early works, “Ancient Aiethopia” most successfully unites the diverse strands of his composing.

Sun Ra’s music became increasingly exotic with the addition of African and Latin-American instruments. After the Arkestra moved to New York about 1960, he became wholly involved with free jazz; he dispensed with composition entirely, creating works by conducting his improvisers. Among his free jazz recordings, The Magic City (1965/66) is the most significant. The Arkestra, which included dancers, dressed in fantastical costumes inspired by ancient Egyptian attire and the space age, and Sun Ra conducted while wearing flowing robes and futuristic helmets. He was highly regarded for his atonal solos on synthesizer, an instrument that he virtually pioneered in jazz.
During the 1970s and ’80s Sun Ra’s Arkestra made increasing use of earlier compositions of his own and of composers such as Henderson, Duke Ellington, and Thelonious Monk. He and his music are featured in the films The Cry of Jazz (1959), Space Is the Place (1971), and Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise (1980).

IAN ANDERSON

Ian Anderson biography
Ian Scott Anderson - Born August 10, 1947 (Dunfermline, Scotland)
Leader/founder of JETHRO TULL and veteran of the 60's blues-rock scene, this eccentric and highly charismatic minstrel who used to get the most incredible sounds from his golden flute is now in his late 50's, yet shows no signs of slowing down. Indeed, he keeps on touring and churning out albums despite a totally apathetic music industry. In 1983 he decided to go solo and has since graced us with four new albums.
In general, his solo material closely resembles that of traditional JETHRO TULL, although it tends to be more serious and more instrumental. "Walk Into Light" (1983) features Peter John Vetteese (EURYTHMICS) on keyboards; the album suffers from a poor 80's production but Vetteese's rhythmic and catchy play complements Anderson's mellow vocals rather well. "Divinities: Twelve Dances with God" (1995) is the least TULL-like of the lot: basically a classical album, it is totally instrumental and its spiritual theme runs the gamut from Indian to Russian to Celtic Folk. "The Secret Language of Birds" (2000), a rather acoustic album, returns to the 70's roots and dons some particularly memorable melodies. "Rupi's Dance" (2003) is the one that most closely celebrates the old TULL days and will likely be the TULL fans' favourite. Anderson's gentle, self-deprecating wit and knack for writing simple, yet endearing melodies shine through out.

Jack Bruce
John Symon Asher Bruce (14 May 1943 – 25 October 2014) was a Scottish bassist, singer-songwriter, musician and composer. He gained popularity as the co-lead vocalist and bassist of British rock band Cream. After the group disbanded in 1968, he pursued a solo career and also played with several bands.
In the early 1960s Bruce joined the Graham Bond Organisation (GBO), where he met his future bandmate Ginger Baker. After leaving the band, he joined with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, where he met Eric Clapton, who also became his future bandmate. His time with the band was brief. In 1966, he formed Cream with lead guitarist Clapton and drummer Baker; he co-wrote many of their songs (including "Sunshine of Your Love", "White Room" and "I Feel Free") with poet/lyricist Pete Brown. After the group disbanded in the late 1960s he began recording solo albums. His first solo album, Songs for a Tailor, released in 1969, was a worldwide hit. Bruce formed his own band to perform the material live, and subsequently formed a blues-rock band West, Bruce and Laing in 1972, with guitarist Leslie West and drummer Corky Laing. His solo career spanned several decades. From the 1970s to the 1990s he played with several bands as a touring member. He reunited with Cream in 2005 for concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and at Madison Square Garden in New York.
