SAO PAULO
A sandstorm painted the sky yellow on Thursday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad and other cities.
The sand has forced residents to leave the house wearing surgical masks and increased the ranks of hospitals with patients with respiratory problems.
Officers also wore masks to direct traffic in Baghdad under a few meters of visibility. The streets, most of them were deserted.
Some shops in the capital chose to close the doors at the prospect of little customers.
Dust storms are common in Iraq, although drought has aggravated their severity.

CEBU CITY -- A landslide triggered by incessant rains blocked a remote stone quarry, leaving two miners trapped Thursday in Argao, Cebu.
The landslide struck a mining area in Barangay Calagasan around 9:10 a.m. Small-scale miners have been digging limestone in the area for almost two years.
Heavy rains had weakened the soil in the mountainous area. Earth loosened and, together with boulders, fell and blocked the entrance of the quarry.
A house below it was almost crushed and buried. As of 9 p.m. Thursday, rescuers were still trying to pull out Nelson Pantojan, 33, and Fidelito Alforque, 30.
The two men were not injured but had no food and source of light.
Another miner, 22-year-old Joey Langi, was lucky to have gone out just before the landslide occurred.
He said they asked him to check what was happening outside since they heard something like a crushing sound and felt the earth shaking.
He ran for his life when he saw boulders falling and sought help from residents.

CEBU. Rescuers try manual methods to pull out two miners trapped in a quarry in Barangay Calagas, Argao, Cebu when a landslide covered the entrance of the cave. As of 9 p.m., the miners were inside the quarry for 11 hours without food, water or light. (Alex Badayos)
Langi said they dig limestone to be used in stonecraft that is for export.
Miners can sell limestone at one peso per kilo.
The quarry site is 24 kilometers away or an hour’s drive from the town proper.
Rescuers from the Mama Boria Sunrise Industries (MBSI), Argao Police Station and a medical rescue team were helping in the pullout of Pantojan and Alforque.
A team formed by Argao Municipal Councilor Guillermo Caminero Jr. used backhoes but found out that driving them only caused more vibration that would result to more earth collapsing.
“We dug it first from above but the trapped miners would protest, shouting that it was causing more shaking,” Isabello Alburo, one of the MBSI miners, said in Cebuano.
The trapped miners were only about five meters from the entrance of the quarry.
The lot, owned by Rogelio Fuentes, has a permit from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB).
Barangay Calagasan chairman Teodulo Alberca said it was the first time that a landslide occurred since mining in the area began in 2009.
A plan by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to have the area planted with trees has been stalled because seedlings were short, Alberca said.
Dr. Eddie Llamedo, MGB information officer, said Fuentes’s permit covers 1.16 hectares and is good until January 16, 2012. The permit was issued on January 17, 2011.
Llamedo said a team will be sent to the area Friday to investigate.

THE 26 families displaced by Saturday’s landslide in Naga City, south Cebu will move to a nearby relocation site this month.
Naalad barangay captain Sandra Canalita said a private lot owner agreed to rent out 30 square meters for each family at a rate of P3 daily.
The lot, adjacent to the landslide area, is owned by the Hospicio de San Jose de Barili, a facility for senior citizens.
Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong said the P10,000 financial aid for each family will be distributed only when relocation starts to ensure that the money will be used for housing materials.
Naga City is one of three southern Cebu towns where some mountain barangays are highly prone to landslides based on a 2008 geohazard mapping assessment for Central Visayas.
The list includes southern towns of Dumanjug, Ronda, then and Talisay City in Metro Cebu and Balamban town in the west coast.
Argao town, the site of yesterday’s collapse of a limestone quarry, was not mentioned.
Eddie Llamedo, spokesman of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Central Visayas said the 2008 map of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau was 100 percent complete.
The map includes 19 landslide-prone barangays in Cebu City. These are barangays Lusaran, Binaliw, Guba, Budlaan, Malubog, Buot-Taup and Busay.
Six barangays in Naga City are also prone to landslides: Tagjaguimit, Alpaco, Balirong, Mayana, Naalad, and Cogon.
The others in Balamban (11 barangays), five each in Toledo City and Asturias town, 12 in Catmon, and one each in Dumanjug, Ronda, and Pinamungajan

KORONADAL CITY -- The local government unit in Tampakan, South Cotabato wanted regular foot patrols in a landslide prone illegal mining site where three miners were buried alive in April.
In a recent interview here, Tampakan Mayor Leonardo V. Escobillo said the patrolling of a composite police and military team would "deter small-scale illegal miners from returning" to Barangay Pulabato.
"We don't have enough local police forces, so instead of setting up a detachment there, I proposed a regular foot patrolling in the area," he said.
The mayor noted that with the measure, they hope to prevent another deadly landslide incident, which was blamed on the illegal sluice mining, locally called banlas.
South Cotabato Governor Arthur Y. Pingoy Jr. earlier said that an estimated two hectares of the mountains have reportedly been destroyed by guerilla banlas operations within the Tampakan project.
Banlas or sluice mining method employs the pouring of large amounts of water on a mountain’s surface to extract the rocks containing the gold ore.
Banlas mining was first uncovered in T'boli town, another gold rush site in South Cotabato, and has invaded Tampakan town a few years ago despite the crackdown ordered by the Provincial Government.
Escobillo said that checkpoints have been set-up in the roads leading to the mountains also in line with the efforts to curb illegal mining activities in the town, host of the massive Tampakan copper-gold project of foreign-backed Sagittarius Mines Inc.
Critics earlier criticized Sagittarius Mines for failing to keep illegal mining activities away from its tenement.
Sagittarius Mines is controlled by Xstrata Copper, the world's fourth largest copper producer, with Australian firm Indophil Resources NL as minority equity partner. Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corp. owns a stake at Indophil.
The Tampakan copper-gold project represents the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in Southeast Asia. If developed, the mine could be the biggest in the Philippines and among the largest copper mines in the world.
Current estimates indicate it could yield an average of 375,000 tons of copper and 360,000 ounces of gold per year over a 17-year life of mine, the company said in a study.
With a required capital investment of US$5.9 billion, the Tampakan project would be the largest foreign direct investment in the Philippines should it go on commercial stream in 2016.
The Tampakan project, however, is presently hobbled by the environment code of South Cotabato that bans open pit mining, the method Sagittarius Mines said it will employ in extracting the minerals.
