Deyeuxia purpurea encompasses a widespread, apomictic complex of morphologically very variable and intergrading forms. These have been treated by different authors either as separate species, or at subspecific or varietal rank within D. purpurea. Most are based on types from outside China, and no attempt is made here to relate these names to variation in the complex within China. The name Calamagrostis angustifolia refers to a particularly narrow-leaved form (blades 1.5–3.5 mm wide) from NE China.
