Greetings, Cafe USA Netizens! Thank you all for your warm welcome and kind comments to my first blog. It really is good to be living in Korea again.
Yesterday morning I presented my credentials to President Lee Myung-bak at the Blue House. It was an honor and pleasure to meet the President of this great country, our friend and ally. The Blue House is very beautiful.
Calling on the ROK Government
Last week I had my first meeting with Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan. Aside from discussing the issues of the day, we reminisced together about U.S.-Korean relations in the 1980s. At that time, Foreign Minister Yu was in charge of North American affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and I was a political officer at the Embassy. I also enjoyed hearing about President Lee's trip to Russia, one of the key players in the Six Party Talks. The last time I was in Russia was last year to discuss some of our longer-range goals in the Six-Party talks, like the work in the group that Russia chairs on a regional security mechanism. In addition, Foreign Minister Yu and I cooperated to support the visit of U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill (an old friend to Korea) to Seoul en route to Pyongyang for "substantive discussions." As you can imagine, we are keeping in close touch with our ROK allies on the issues surrounding denuclearization in North Korea and the peace process on the Korean peninsula.
Getting Out and About
Over the weekend, I enjoyed walking around Seoul and meeting people casually in the street. One man I met recognized me and then introduced himself as the father of one of the officers who works in our bureau in Washington. It is a small world, indeed. On Saturday, I set out to take a bike ride along the Han River. This ended up being more logistically challenging than I had originally anticipated. I unpacked my two bikes that had just arrived from the U.S., but found that I had not packed my tire pump. When I stopped to put air in my tires along the Han River bike trail, I discovered that I needed an adaptor for the kind of tires I have, which apparently are incompatible with Korean pumps. Just when I thought I had to give up, a very, very fit Korean biker (who told me he was 60 years old and had already biked 60 kilometers that day) guided me 15 kilometers out of his way help me find a tiny "bike shop under the bridges" that sold me an adapter for 2,000 won. I am so grateful to that gentleman, who out of sheer kindness helped a stranger (I don't think he knew I was the U.S. Ambassador) who wanted to enjoy the Han River's newest glory. Now that I have the right part for pumping up my tires, I want to do lots more biking.
Our Peace Corps Reunion
To my great joy, a number of former U.S. Peace Corps volunteers arrived over the weekend for a reunion. I invited eight former colleagues (from 1975-77, group "K-35”) for dinner at my residence. We shared many fond memories and marveled at the changes both in Korea and also in our lives over the past thirty-odd years. For the first time since I arrived in Korea, the residence staff produced a completely Korean meal. It was absolutely delicious: sundubu jjigae, excellent namul made with the freshest ingredients -- nothing fancy -- just Korean food at its freshest and best. We even went out and bought Korean dishes and bowls so that we can serve Korean food to guests on occasion.
Thank you, Netizens, for reading my blog. I am looking forward to a busy week: yesterday I presented my credentials to President Lee, and later I plan to visit my old hometowns, Busan and Yesan. Have a nice week, and don’t forget to enjoy the autumn leaves changing colors. I know I will.

Cafe USA
