In the lecture, the lecturer strongly
argues that the technologies that using coal without making any harmful impacts
have some drawbacks. This totally contradicts the reading passage’s claim that
there are several methods to use coal without hurting the environment. In fact,
the reading is somewhat wrong, less convincing, and even excessively
exaggerated.
First, the speaker maintains that gasification
is not a very good solution. To be specific, the coal should be heated to make
gas through it. This leads to emission of harmful substances. Also, in the reading,
this technology gets rid of impurities, but there will cost of lots of water,
and they will pollute the water. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s
argument that converting coal into a gas is eco-friendly.
Second, the professor insists on the fact
that using static electricity is useless. This is because collection plates
only gather soot and ash, not the carbons. Even though eliminating soot and ash
is good for the environment, getting rid of carbon is more important, because
they give harmful impacts on it. This rebuts the reading passage’s insistence
that static electricity can be a method to bring peace to the environment.
The last, the lecturer believes that fabric
filter requires too much money for maintaining it. In fact, the bags have a
short life, so replacing them often would cost a lot. Also, operating large
fans takes a lot of energy and lowers the efficiency. This refutes the reading
passage’s assertion that fabric filters are option to reduce the impact coming
from the coal.
