The Transfer Dyeing of Park, Hae-Kyu
Chang Yoon-woo
Professor of Sungshin Women's University
"A Mountain is a mountain and waters is waters" It is a benevolent saying of the Reverend Lee, Sung-Chul, who passed away some days ago. I enjoy mountain climbing a lot being born in the environment surrounded by mountains. I always estimate the lessons mountains give.
The mountain gives "something" special to Prof. Park, Hae-Kyu. He loves to climb mountains and ponders the meaning mountains give in a life in seclusion alone. A valley at the day-break. a summit at dawn, a range of mountains in the midday, a way of descending a mountain in the evening and long years passed in the ground under the starred roof --- Finally, as the technique so called "Transfer Dyeing" appearing in ten years as if the solitude and perseverance of a disciplinary were in end, all of those are emersed on his drawing, mountains being in accordance with some shapes.
His works make everyone fall into a trance. They have an illusion and make a dim consciousness as if we were a Taoist hermit strolling over the field between being asleep and awake. Mountains are facing each other, valleys are yelling out. There upon all the creatures, one becomes his own Lord throughout haven and earth.
When I first met Park, Hae-Kyu, he gave a impression as a countrified young man rather than as a dyer and professor. He was a kindhearted common person as to become acquaintances at once having a drink. Later I came to know that he loves drinking and mountain climbing.
The world of Park, Hae-Kyu's dyeing passes the four steps : the introduction, the development, conversion, and conclusion. In the first exhibition in 1983 corresponding to the introduction, a flower as an abstraction came out. The mass production of Pattern Design demanded by the industrial society was connected with the development in his second exhibition. In the conversion, the step demanding a transition, the traditional pattern modernizing our tradition appears as a printing work. Finally, the conclusion, which is the output through ten wears, splendidly shows the mountains and waters of Korea. The 28 pieces including his masterpiece reveal their true entities in the meandering seas. There are maple trees in the Mt. Naejang. I have once been with him : a clouded sea around the Chun-wang summit of the Mt. Jiri : well-known and unknown mountain tops and valleys. The works seal futile appearance of human being in the mysterious lonely mountains and waters, in which nonexistent spiritual mountains being beginning to connect with each other and breaking down and they are coming into sight and disappear.
It seems that children are jumping about on the villages in the mountainside, on the rocks, in the trees, and on the bands of rivers. Although the saying "A mountain is a mountain and water is water" left by the Reverend Sung-chul is fully understood with his deep thought. I think its meaning doesn't have to be hard solved out. Instead, it is easily replaced by the true meaning of Park, Hae-Kyu shown not by western philosophical interpretation but by his oriental speculation!
At any rate, there are exquisite skills in his technique of transfer dyeing. The step of reaffirmation follows, once the creation desire is filtered into turning round. The technique is the output of combining following four skills: "The wax resist dyeing" of paraffin frequently used, "the paste dyeing"using the paste, "the printing" as a silk screen and "the dyeing" As for the attitude and technique fascinated with an mountain as the origin of human being. It seems to be the obstinacy that there are no other ways better than the expression of the surface as a metaphysical metaphor. It is described not by hands but by mind. Namely, something unrevealed is found rater than something revealed in his works. Though, one little mistake, it might be a mean to gloss over the unskilled.
