immediately s solved. After one woman claimed she lost it, the winner is announced. How an average american woman wound up on the front cover of "people" magazine. She lost half her body weight.
>> You could be in one of these legs.
>> Plus -- how they're picking the jury for martha stewart. What both sides are looking for. And -- the beauty pageant background of the star of new "average joe."
[Captioning made possible by king world and the U.S. Department of education] Deborah: Hello, and thanks for joining us. It is the wedding picture of the moment, britney spears and her momentary husband at the wedding chapel in las vegas. The photo comes courtesy of "us" weekly magazine. The release of this wedding picture is just one of the new developments in the saga of britney's 55-hour marriage. Stacey gualandi brings us up to date.
>> This is your first look at britney's not so perfect marriage. Britney spears and jason alexander, moments after they said "I do." The official wedding photo snapped inside of las vegas' white chapel is featured on the upcoming issue of "us" magazine. Britney is smiling. Wearing a white baseball cap and a dark top that reveals her tummy. Just above her knee, a garter. "Us magazine's jeremy helligar says despite what you may have heard britney did not consider this wedding a joke.
>> According to an eye witness she was crying genuine tears of joy.
>> Could britney's emotions be revealed in her signature on her marriage license? Take a close look. It looks sloppy and barely legible. But look at britney's signature on the complaint for annulment she signed just hours later. Her penmanship was neat and readable. Her lawyer's filed those papers just hours after a court opened.
>> The judge signed an order annulling the marriage.
>> Attorney john hanover handled darva conger's las vegas annulment after her reality tv wedding. Hanover says britney could be forced to pay jason a cash settlement if he takes that route.
>> He could be entitled to that portion of assets that she accumulated during their marriage, which would typically be 1/2 of those assets.
>> But so far jason has said he has no plans to make any claim. Today britney is reportedly in miami. Her publicist would only say she's not working. Obviously she's moving on as a single woman after only 55 hours of marriage. Deborah: Later in the broadcast we'll speak with the young woman who once dated the ex mr. Britney spears. There's quite a dramatic story attached to the winner of a $162 million lottery drawing in ohio. It starts with a woman who claimed the prize but said she lost the winning ticket. The jackpot has been awarded to a different woman. Diane mcinerney reports.
>> I would like to present you with this check payable in the gross amount for $162 million.
>> Wow!
>> She's just won the richest lottery prize in ohio history, $162 million, about $67 million after taxes. But just days before she came forward to claim the big prize, 34-year-old rebecca jamison was shocked when another woman claimed she won the lottery but had lost heretic. Her ticket.
>> It's my property. If anyone tries to cash it in, they can'T.
>> That was elicia battle just days ago lamenting what seemed like a cruel twist of fate. She said she bought the winning ticket at this convenience store, then dropped her pocketbook, scattering the contents all over the snowy parking lot. Then she couldn't find the ticket. South euclid police lieutenant kevin nietert.
>> I have no reason to believe she's fabricating it.
>> Elicia even filed a lost property claim with police, setting off a frenzy as people scoured the parking lot in search of the missing ticket. The big question, what was going to happen if someone else found it?
>> Whoever has the ticket is the one that has the right to steak the claim to the winning jackpot.
>> But all that became moot on tuesday when lottery officials handed over the check to rebecca jamison, a married hospital worker with a young daughter. What did she think when she heard about another person claiming they'd won?
>> I felt sorry for them, really, you know, that she put that out there like that for, you know -- caused such chaos. I'm glad it's all over.
>> As for elicia battle, now many people are wondering if she made up her lost ticket story because lottery officials say they have no doubt that rebecca is the real winner.
>> Luck had nothing to do with this. This is truly a blessing. Truly a blessing. Deborah: Police say they will investigate the claims of ms. Battle, the woman who says she lost the winning ticket. Jury selection is under way in the martha stewart insider trading case. It presents both the prosecution and defense with a problem. Since you cannot find a jury who has not heard of martha stewart, how can you make sure to select one that hasn't formed an opinion about the case? Paul boyd has more.
>> Martha!
>> Some say the trial of domestic diva martha stewart may be won and lost before a word of testimony is heard. Jury selection began today, and the make-up of the panel is expected to be crucial to both sides. Several hundred prospective jurors were summoned to the federal courts in manhattan and given lengthy questionnaires. The precise questioning remains a secret but they likely included questions as to whether or not the would be jurors read her magazines, own stock many her cooperation or aspire to her lifestyle. The questionnaire also asked whether prospective jurors may resent her image, lost any money in the stock market or are struggling financially.
>> The defense is going to be looking for jurors that possibly don't like the federal government, think I.R.S.
>> Court tv's nancy grace.
>> You can pay jury consultants out the yin-yang. But what it boils down to is who the attorneys and who martha stewart has a rapport with.
>> Experts say the prosecution's ideal juror is male, a hardhat or skilled worker, struggling to raise a young family, religious and politically conservative. The defense team's ideal juror is a woman, age 35 or more. She's a well-paid professional or self-employed. She lives in a fashionable manhattan neighborhood and is politically liberal.
>> After having struck many, many felony juries, I can tell you it's won and lost in the jury selection.
>> Martha stewart is charged with securities fraud and obstruction of justice. She's pled not guilty. She was not at court today but is expected to be there when potential jurors are questioned in person later this month. Deborah: It's likely ms. Stewart will not appear in court until january 20. That's when potential jurors will begin court answering questions from attorneys. Some news from "friends" star courtney cox and her husband david arquette are confirming they expect their first child. The couple has been struggling with infer tillty problems and ms. Cox has suffered a number of miscarriages. Our best wishes to them.
>> Next -- how does it feel to have the ex-boyfriend you dated for years suddenly up and marry britney spears?
>> I was shocked. I said, are you kidding me?
>> Why she says she thinks the relationship was real. It's been 10 years since this ugly olympic scandal on the ice.
>> Why? Why?
>> So where are the key players now? From hitting her ex-boyfriend with a hub cap to getting evicted from her home. Tonya harding and nancy kerrigan, where they now? And -- the beauty pageant background of the star of the new "average joe." Deborah: Just about anywhere you might have been in the world, it's been a headline, britney spears' moment tear marriage to a boy from her hometown, something that had everybody asking, what were you thinking? But nobody was asking with more puzzlement than the girl, the one-time mr. Britney spears used to date.
>> There was no one more surprised to hear britney spears got hitched than this woman.
>> I was shocked.
>> This exclusive interview, 22-year-old corie miller, who used to date jason aleasnder, the man who married britney, opens up for the first time about what it was like to learn that her ex married a pop princess.
>> It wasn't hard for me to hear. But no one knew they were dating, anything. Then they were married in vegas.
>> Corie and jason dated since the 9th grade. They mutually ended their relationship last summer. Corie was one of the first calls jason made after he tied the knot. We caught up with him the day his marriage was annulled.
>> Did you think right then and there that you made a mistake?
>> Definitely. We should have known about it the way we did it.
>> Now in a surprise twist it turns out the 6'2" hunk may really be broken-hearted his marriage ended to quickly.
>> He didn't go into this with the intention of getting an annulment?
>> He's shocked about it all. He insearly cares about her. He really does. He thought it would last.
>> Jason has to mend his broken heart while the whole country is laughing. On "letterman" jennifer aniston was even curious about what happened between "I do" and "I don'T."
>> What happened in that little period of time? I'm so curious.
>> It probably occurred to her, oh, my god I'm too big of a star to be married to this load.
>> All of this publicity has even opened up about some trouble in his past.
>> The report shows about 2:30 in the morning the incident occurred. It says he refused to leave the establishment.
>> That charge of refusing to leave the bar was dismissed. But a month later jason was charged at the very same bar with punching someone in the face. That charge was also dismissed. Corie says both jason and britney had no idea how much attention their surprise wedding would bring.
>> I don't think either one of them knew what would come of this, the problems that would come about, all the publicity.
>> Even though they're no longer a couple, corie still thinks fondly of her ex who's made national news for briefly being mr. Britney spears.
>> Who wouldn't want to marry britney spears? Really? What guy would not want to marry britney spears? Deborah: While corie says she still considers jason a friend, she says any sparks between them are long gone. Ordinarily "people" magazine sells its issues by putting really famous celebrities all over the cover. This week's cover doesn't feature anyone famous, rather a real person who accomplished the incredible, losing almost half her body's weight. Victoria recano with one success story that is inspiration for anyone fighting the eternal battle of the bulge.
>> Meet a woman who is quite literally a shadow of her former self.
>> I feel wonderful.
>> 33-year-old christy mcadams from duluth, georgia is truly half the woman she used to be.
>> The jeans you're wearing now are a four?
>> That's correct.
>> So you're wearing a four now but you used to wear what size?
>> These are a 26.
>> A 26? You wore these? You could fit in one leg.
>> In two years christy losa whopping 162 pounds, a remarkable triumph. Now to top it all off, she's landed on the cover of "people" meag seen.
>> Did you ever dream you would be on the cover of "people" magazine?
>> Certainly not. That was never anything I even considered when i started.
>> Christy's weight loss odyssey began after an embarrassing incident on an airplane.
>> The seat belt didn't fit.
>> So christy signed up for weight watchers. On the very first day she got a big surprise. How much did you weigh at that time?
>> Close to 300 pounds. I didn't know it. My bathroom scale didn't register that high. I almost fell over. I thought this cannot be happening.
>> But by carefully balancing her diet and getting plenty of exercise, the pounds gradually came off. While she lost, she also gained. She fell in love and got married. Her new husband tony never knew the old christy.
>> In the pictures, the smile is the same. She had a real big smile.
>> Christy wants her success to serve as inspiration for others.
>> It amazing me the little gradual changes I've made in my life have added up to this tremendous life I live now. Deborah: Good for her. Christy's advice to anyone starting a weight loss program, go it about the way she did, one day at a time. 10 years ago today, the world favorite figure skater was knocked down with a club. Tonya harding, her skating rival hurt her. Harding went on to earn the title of tabloid princess. Logan byrnes brings us up to date on what's happened to the key players in the drama.
>> Why?
>> It was the crime that changed the face of ice skating forever as an olympic hopeful was brutally clubbed on the knee with a metal baton. Suddenly nancy kerrigan and tonya harding were household names to millions of americans who never paid any attention to ice skating.
>> All of a sudden everybody's eyes was on skating. It really made the popularity of the sport skyrocket.
>> Nancy kerrigan recovered from her wounds and won a silver medal at the olympics that same year. She now leads a happy life as a full-time mother to her son matthew.
>> She does chairry work. She has a very good pro career.
>> As for tonya harding, she would plead guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution in the kerrigan assault. She got three years probation and was fined more than $100,000. And it's fair to say that tonya's been fighting for respectability ever since, literally. Believe it on the, tonya harding, seen here in a celebrity boxing match against paula jones, makes her living these days as a prizefighter. There was this astonishing sight as the one-time olympic hopeful spent a week tending gravesites, her sentence for throwing a hub cap at the head of an ex-boyfriend.
>> People do think of her as a joke, it's really sad.
>> Nancy kerrigan has come a long way from the attack that shook the world. It seems tonya harding still has a way to go. Somehow she keeps on trucking. As she once told "inside edition" --
>> I got to keep my spirits up. There's no place where else to go expect up. Deborah: Harding's husband at the time served time in prison for his role in the attack. He has since changed his name. Two other men were also convicted for their roles in the attack. January is always that time of year when people look in the mirror and say this year I'm making changes. "Allure" magazine is helping some people make the changes they need to promote their careers, including one woman you would think would have every option known to man available to her, considering she has a major rock star for a dad.
>> "Allure" magazine took three women and did makeovers to help jump start their careers, all appearing in the january makeover issue of the magazine. Theodora richards wants to be an actress. Her dad is keith richards of the rolling stones. Here she is before and here she is dressed in a red carpet sparkler. Nadia shava wants to get her modeling career off the ground. So "allure" gave her a snazzy hair cut and dressed her in an edgy outfit, very supermodel. Here she is before and here she is after. And lynese "babs" wiley is an aspiring rapper who appeared on P. Diddy's mtv show "making the band." She went from jeans to roberto cavalli couture and a stunning photo in "allure." This season's leading lady is former miss missouri, marvin jensen. She sought the miss U.S.A. Title in 2001. Last season's "average joe" beauty was also miss missouri, in 2002.
