'QUEEN ROCK MONTREAL' SIMULTANEOUS DOUBLE CD & TRIPLE LP RELEASES Parlophone/EMI Release date: October 29, 2007
QUEEN RETURN TO ROCK YOU!
When Queen returned for the fourth time to Montreal's 18,000 seater Forum in November 1981, where this concert was recorded, it was after a 15 month absence which had seen them become the biggest band in the world.
Fuelled by the release of The Game album and extensive touring, Queen now dominated the charts in every major territory and ever-eager for a new challenge, had taken on, and won, new continents.
America was the big game, and they won out, playing their biggest tour ever, with 46 sold out concerts including four nights at New York's Madison Square Garden, and The Game delivered their two biggest selling US singles, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Another One Bites The Dust (both US No 1's), and the bonus of their first American No.1 album.
Under Pressure had returned them to No.1 in the UK singles chart, and Greatest Hits topped the album charts. With a No.1 video (Greatest Flix) at the same time, Queen became the first band ever to top all three charts simultaneously.
Indeed, this was a time in which Queen was racking up a number of world 'firsts', at every turn setting new benchmarks which would take many years for their contemporaries to match. The band's historic invasion of Latin America in the early part of '81 saw scenes of mass hysteria unequalled since the height of Beatle mania. When Queen played two concerts at Sao Paulo's Morumbi stadium their first night broke the word attendance record for a single paying concert, with more than 131,000 Brazilians turning out to see the band play. Their second night drew 128,000.
By the time Queen had completed the first leg of their Latin America incursion at the end of March, Queen albums held nine of the top 10 positions of the Argentinean charts.
Queen returned to the Latin continent again in September, this time advancing on and capturing the hearts and minds of Venezuela and Mexico.
1981 was, says John Deacon, "a year for discovering new audiences we didn't know existed."
Only at the end of '81, did Queen return to a familiar audience, with two shows at Montreal's Forum, in the Canadian province of Quebec, a venue the band had first performed at in 1977 and regularly re-visited. The two dates - November 24 and 25, 1981 - were scheduled specifically because Queen were setting themselves another first: a full length film to properly document their live show, with state-of-the art sound recording.
Having spent almost two years non-stop touring, and invigorated by their triumphant Latin America experience, Queen hit Montreal in top form.
"Hello Montreal ... long time no see. You wanna get crazy?" asks Freddie as the band tear into their alternative 'fast' version of We Will Rock You, and from there on Queen show their hard rock roots, slowing down only for Love of My Life and the more mid-tempo Under Pressure, notably being performed live for the first time in this concert.
The real joy to be had in listening to Freddie, Brian, Roger and John performing here is that this recording delivers raw Queen. This is pre the Hot Space album, before keyboards would find a place in the band's touring line up; four God-gifted musicians in total cohesion, while finding space to demonstrate their individual strengths.
Did we really realise previously what good vocalists they all were? When Roger Taylor performs I'm in Love With My Car, we realise, drums not withstanding, what a big piece of the Queen sound he is responsible for, and why it naturally followed he would occasionally depart into solo projects.
And then there is Brian May, doubling on rhythm and lead guitars, highlighting the note-stretching and chord-crunching which since the very beginning has come to so identify the Queen 'sound',
John Deacon's rock solid bass provides, as ever, the faultless heartbeat behind everything.
Freddie Mercury exerts the vocal kinetics you would expect, and hearing him so in total command of his audience, it is poignant to note that exactly ten years later, to the day this recording was made, Freddie would no longer be with us.
For this special edition release, the sound has been newly mixed and remastered for DTS Surround Sound and PCM Stereo from the original multitrack tapes.
The CD and LP contain two bonus tracks Flash and The Hero, both performed in the concert, but never previously available.

On 29 October 2007, Eagle Rock Entertainment simultaneously release two incredible DVDs capturing the incomparable Queen in their pomp as the world's biggest band at a sold out show in 1981 at Montreal's 18,000-seater Forum. The single DVD is "Queen Rock Montreal" and there is a special edition double DVD "Queen Rock Montreal + Live Aid". The live CD/LP from the concert is released on the same date on EMI with HD-DVD and Blu-ray versions to follow in November through Eagle.
Following their record-breaking South American tour, the Montreal shows on 24 and 25 November 1981 were to be the only concerts by Queen ever shot on film - indeed they were the first group to shoot an entire show in full cinema format 35mm. These releases offer the best ever sound and picture quality on a Queen concert release. Always a great live band, with two years non-stop touring behind them and Freddie Mercury in front of them, Queen excelled themselves with the cameras rolling. The footage has been digitally restored from the original film and the sound has been newly mixed and mastered for DTS Surround Sound and PCM Stereo from the original multi-track tapes.

The real joy to be had in watching Freddie, Brian, Roger and John performing here is that, unlike any other Queen concert film available, this delivers raw Queen. This is before the Hot Space album, before keyboards would find a place in the band's touring line up; this is simply four musicians in total cohesion.
Originally titled, "We Will Rock You", this film was first launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1983 - as only Queen could. It was then released in North America (September 1984), becoming the first commercially available film of Queen in concert. For this special edition, the picture has been digitally restored from the original 35mm negative.
The double disc release offers the incredible bonus of a slew of Live Aid features and performances. Regularly polled as the greatest live performance of all time, Queen's mighty Live Aid show at 6.44pm on July 13, 1985, is here in full. In addition to the set that reinforced Queen's position as unrivalled rock entertainers, Freddie and Brian's performance later in the evening of the poignant "Is This The World We Created" is included. Also featured are 11 minutes of never before seen Live Aid rehearsal footage, plus a rehearsal interview with the band. In addition, there's the curiosity value of a 1982 news feature from US TV series PM Magazine. Brian May and Roger Taylor bring the story up to date with a brand new audio commentary on the Montreal concert.
Both these releases offer extraordinary footage of one if the greatest acts of all time, recorded at the height of the powers. Truly, Rock royalty.
