Matthew 6
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.
Is not life more important than food, and the body more
important than clothes?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not
much more valuable than they?
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
"And why do you worry about clothes?
See how the lilies of the field grow.
They do not labor or spin.
So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
For the pagans run after all these things, and your
heavenly Father knows that you need them.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.
The Harvest of the Lord
Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." But He said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." So the disciples were saying to one another, "No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. "Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. "Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. "For in this case the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.' "I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor." John 4:31-38
When it comes to harvesting, it's often seen as a celebration, but it's not always the case. Gathering the bounties of spring and summer might seem less impressive compared to the laborious efforts. The harvest that the Lord conducts aligns with the reality of our lives; it's not showy or immediately apparent. Understanding the Lord's harvest is crucial, as the entire journey of faith revolves around it.
Why did a Samaritan woman become significant? She wasn't regarded highly, and Samaria had been overtaken by the Gentiles, losing its affiliation with the Jews and its purity. However, during Jesus' time, Judea was also grappling with its identity after the fall of Babylon. Thus, discussions of legitimacy or purity weren't exclusive to Samaria. People were externally emulating the historical ways God had ordained.
For Israel, a chosen nation, tradition and purity were lifelines. They held onto ancestral beliefs and records. The Samaritan woman highlighted this aspect in her conversation with the Lord. She mentioned Jacob, her forefather, his well, and the place of worship. Form certainly held importance, but because it encapsulated content. Harvesting involves the separation of form and content, discerning the essence within.
Frequently, I find myself self-critical, thinking, "My religious life isn't thriving these days." Often, this refers to adhering to formalities of belief. Naturally, in the past, following these formalities gave the illusion of growing faith, and that might very well have been the case. I say this based on personal recollections. Some individuals require this process, and they might currently be in that phase. Nevertheless, it's time for contemplation.
This is because the Lord is currently conducting the harvest. Essentially, it's not about retracing steps to a time filled with various forms of faith from the past. Instead, it's about comprehending the significance of the Lord's harvest and moving ahead.
The Lord's harvest unfolds in the following manner:
Initially, the Lord asked the woman for water. It's akin to an evaluation, checking if the eggs are cooked. The "egg" the Lord desires is the result of love. The question posed is whether such love exists. The Lord's response to this was the assurance of bottled water.
Subsequently, the woman assessed the Lord. She first acknowledged the differences between Samaritans and Jews and then queried, "How can I obtain this bottled water when you lack a vessel and this well is deep?" The woman still believes that maturity and the harvest of faith can only be attained through conventional methods. Once again, the Lord's harvest is a process that involves formalities.
Let's revisit what the Lord conveyed in this scenario. If you water me, I'll provide you with bottled water. This isn't conditional; it implies that it's time for us to bear the fruits of love. By living in this manner, we receive bottled water.
