Dear I DOT M,
I absolutely love your Everything Happens to Me cover!!!
It was truly incredible. You have a beautiful voice that suits jazz perfectly.
I'll be honest and say that I didn't know it was a cover at first. I knew something was up because the lyrics mentioned airmail and that's just not something a lot of people use in modern society.
So after a quick scroll through the comments section, a Monbebe said the song wasn't on Spotify. I don't have a Spotify account so I checked Apple Music. Then all the other versions of the song popped up.
So I googled it and read about the origins of the song. Turns out it was originally recorded by Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra in 1940. The song has also been recorded by other famous jazz musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Chet Baker.
Monbebes said you have talked about how much you love Chet Baker and we all know I.M loves jazz. I remember in your Esquire photobook, you said that your Dad always plays jazz music. So it's pretty cool that you covered this song as a Christmas gift to Monbebe.
There's no one like I.M in all of K-Pop. You are truly an original and complete artist. I mean these days artists cover popular modern songs and I personally can't stand this.
To me, the purpose of a cover is to reintroduce a classic song to your audience. It's also about showing people your talent by covering a song that is already famous. It just feels silly to me to cover a song that is so new. Also, a cover is about making the song sound like its yours. Basically, it's supposed to be so good that it makes your fans think it's your song.
Anywho, I'm going to check out the versions by Chet, Ella and Billie. I just started getting into jazz when I started my record collection. I bought some Duke Ellington, Nancy Wilson, and Scott Joplin albums just a few months ago.
Okay really, I'm going now. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 🎄⛪️🥳
Please stay safe & healthy!
You've got the crown, now take the throne. 🐈⬛👑💜
Peace & Blessings,
Penny
