A FEW weeks ago, the whole of the footballing world learnt what many of already knew. That Jade North is honour free.
Why on earth would Jade North choose to renege on a deal with the North Queensland Fury to head to Incheon United? Now, I’ve lived in Korea for several years in the past and I am an interested follower of the K-league. So, I thought I’d officially confirm what we all have surmised. It was for the money!
As a football club, Incheon United have two things going for them. They have a nice and relatively new stadium (built in 2002, for the World Cup). The second is a sponsorship deal with Daewoo.
Beyond that, the city of Incheon is an industrial port and less than scenic. The club itself was founded in 2003 and has no pedigree. It was runner up in the K-league in 2005, but has been nowhere near since. They supply one player to the National Under 23 squad, but none to the Full Squad or the Under 20 squad. The best a player at Incheon United has ever achieved (Choi Tae Uk) has been a smattering of international caps plus a high profile transfer within Korea. This is, in no way, a gateway to Europe.
So why on earth would Jade North voluntarily make himself public enemy number one in New South Wales and Queensland in addition to the scorn he already receives here in Perth and in other cities around Australia for his average to poor Socceroo performances? The dirt sheets pin the reason to a figure of about two million bucks. I, for one, doubt the deal is that lucrative. We may never know.
Jade North isn’t the only Australian to ply his trade in Korea. Matt McKay preceded him at Roar. And Ahmad Elrich made his name at Busan. Similarly, the J-League has pilfered some of the best Australian talent in the past, trotting out names like Arnold, Bingley, Corica, Griffiths, Popovic, Vidmar and Zelic.
If we can follow Korea’s lead and go Dutch on managers (Hiddink, Advocaat and Verbeek) to great success, can we follow their transfer policy? I believe so. There is no reason why Australian clubs can’t offer a career path to quality players from other countries with less developed leagues than ours.
And by less developed, I mean less lucrative. In short, flash the cash.
Now, this may mean looking into South East Asia and deeper into Africa and South America. It may mean a few extra bucks on scouting, but it might also mean picking up a Jaycee John or a Sebastian Quintana (who have impressed the hell out of me in the World Cup qualifiers). It worked with Brazil (Rech, Edgar, Reinaldo and Fred), but, hey they play soccer in other places too.
There might be other more benefits too. When a notable Korean player makes a move overseas, the local cable TV stations buy the rights to their games. What does this mean? When Cha Du Ri was at Mainz, we got Mainz every week on TV. Not Bayern. Not Dortmund. Mainz. And Mainz did, do and will suck.
When Park Ji Sung and Lee Young Pyo were at PSV, we got PSV every week. No Ajax. No Feyenoord. The point is recruiting foreign players might just expand the A-league’s broadcast base to other interested countries (particularly in Asia). More TV means more money. And I think all of the A-league clubs wouldn’t mind a little extra cash at the moment. The talent pool is Australia is shallow. Every club has players on their book who are, in effect, cheating a living. The introduction of the two Queensland clubs plus a couple more clubs a year or two after that is only going to compound matters.
I don’t know about you but I am horrified by the thought of Glory’s talent level being diminished even further by the extra clubs in the league. I mean, paying them to take James Robinson is one thing, but I’ll be livid if we lose a Srhoj or a Topor-Stanley.
Introducing a few more quality foreigners would deepen the pool. It would increase the levels of competition and force local players to improve in order to keep making match day squads. They need not be marquee quality. Simply better than the average local player. If they come at lower prices too, all the better.
This isn’t necessarily a Glory-centric idea. It can benefit the entire league. Indeed, Glory have tried this once before. We all remember the Henry Faarodo experiment. It failed miserably, and so we decided to retreat to the continual mediocrity of importing players of the Brian Deane and Neil Teggart calibre.
This talent drain will never end. Players will always follow the yellow brick road, safe in the knowledge that they can always return. Indeed, even a scoundrel like North will be welcomed back with open arms. But refocusing our recruiting may offset the losses with some decent gains.
