TROKA (Third ROK Army), South Korea's largest and most diversified combat organization, is responsible for guarding the most likely potential attack routes from North Korea to Seoul -- the Munsan, Ch'orwon, and Tongduch'on corridors. The 3rd ROK Army headquarters mission is to defend Kyonggi Province. The I ROK Corps defends the Munsan corridor, and the VI ROK Corps defends the Uijongbu corridor.
The First Army and the Third Army occupy well-fortified positions stretching southward from the DMZ about fifty kilometers. They have the task of defending their area of responsibility that ranges from the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) to the Seoul metropolitan area. They each consist of an army command and several corps commands, divisions and brigades. These armies, in order to prepare for surprise attacks and high-speed maneuver warfare launched by North Korea, deploy ROK-model tanks, a variety of firearms, TOWs and surface-to-air missiles along the major route that connects the DMZ to Seoul.
The CFC structure in Korea requires a high degree of coordination between US and ROK forcess at all levels. There are Combat Support Coordination Teams at First ROK Army (FROKA) and the Third ROK Army (TROKA). These teams facilitate day-to-day working relationships between US and ROK units. The Division Transportation Operations [DTO] office obtains convoy clearance during armistice operations direct from the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) I and V ROK Corps of the Third ROKA (TROKA). ROKA CMCCs coordinate clearances which transit two or more Corps or Army areas.
The US Air Force 604th Air Support Operations Squadron is stationed at Camp Red Cloud Army Installation, Republic of Korea. The 604 ASOS is the only squadron in the Air Force that combines the Tactical Air Control Parties (TACPs), attached to and collocated with 2d (US) Infantry Division, and the Air Support Operations Center (ASOC). The ASOC supports the 2d (US) Infantry Division, Eighth (US) Army, the Combined Forces Command and the V and VII Corps of the Third Republic of Korea Army (TROKA). This one squadron is custodian of the entire Korean theater Tactical Air Control System/Army Air to Ground System (TACS/AAGS) for Korea, which links the Army's call for airstrikes to the aircraft that drop the bombs satisfying the airstrike request.
In June 1992, the Combined Field Army was disestablished and the 604 ASOCS was realigned with the Third Republic of Korea Army (TROKA). TACPs at Camps Casey, Stanley, and Yongsan fell under the TROKA ALO and then went under the 607th Air Support Operations Group. This alignment makes the 604 ASOCS the first Air Force ASOC permanently aligned with a foreign field army.
The US Air Force Third ROK Army - Air Liaison Office (TROKA-ALO) was activated in 1992 after the disestablishment of the US Combined Field Army (CFA). Elements of the CFA Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) were realigned to support TROKA’s Air Support Operations Center (ASOC) at its hardened facility at YongIn while remaining stationed at Camp Red Cloud. Since July 1998, TROKA has operated out of Osan Air Base and its mission has evolved to include support of the First, Second and Third ROK Armies at Wonju, Taegu and YongIn, respectively. TROKA-ALO also supports the Ground Component Commander’s Deep Operations Coordination Cell, through Detachment 1, located at YongSan Garrison, Seoul. The unit is fully prepared for both fixed and mobile operations. As liaison for the Air Component Command, TROKA-ALO ensures the integration of USAF and ROKAF close air support and related missions through enabling effective communication between multiple combined command centers. Members retain fighter duty and terminal attack control certification to provide maximum flexibility to the Air Component Commander. Members also provide oversight of TACP and ASOC training and standardization & evaluation for the 604th Air Support Operations Squadron.
