5. At the golf course / screen golf 골프치기, 스크린 골프
골프 용어부터 전체적으로 살펴보자.
일단 골프를 치려면 골프 클럽(=골프 채)이 있어야 한다. 골프 클럽은 그 종류가 다양하다. 꼭 알아야만 된다.
1. 드라이버(1번 우드): 보통 파4 ~파5 홀에서 첫 번째 샷을 할 때 사용한다. (우드-Wood: 헤드를 나무로 만들었던 데서 유래)
2. 페어웨이 우드(3~11번 우드): 첫 번째 샷을 할 때에도 사용하지만, 주로 파 5홀에서 두 번째 샷을 할 때 사용한다. (파 – Par: 1홀를 끝내야 하는 기준 타수, 파 5홀이면 다섯 타가 기준타수 이다. )
3. 아이언 (1~9번): 주로 두 번째 샷 또는 세 번째 샷에서 사용하지만 파 3홀에서는 첫 번째 샷을 할 때 사용 가능하다. 1번 우드가 1번 아이언 보다 멀리 날아간다.
4. 웨지(48도~64도): 100야드 안쪽 또는 주변에서 그린에 올리기 위해서 사용하고, 벙커에서도 사용한다. 여기서 ‘48도~64도’의‘도’는 클럽 페이스의 각도의 의미한다.
이렇게 대 분류할 수 있고, 다시 작게 분류해 상황에 따라 적절한 클럽(채)를 사용한다. 여기서 첫 번째 샷이 어떠하고, 파~가 어떠하고 등은 아래를 보면 알 수 있다.
그럼, 골프장으로 가자. 골프장(The golf course)에 가면, 아래것 것들이 있다.
골프 코스는 일반적으로 18홀을 한 단위로 구성되며, 1개의 홀은 티잉 그라운드(Teeing Ground – 보통 teeing box 라고 함), 스루 더 그린(Through the Green), 그린(Green), 해저드(Hazard) 의 4개 구역으로 구성되어 있다. 2. 스루 더 그린(Through the Green) 페어웨이와 러프를 합쳐서 스루 더 그린(Through the Green)이라고 한다.
- 페어웨이(fairway): 공을 타격하기 좋게 항상 잔디를 짧게 깍아놓은 구역이다.
- 러프(rough): 페어웨이 이외의 의도적인 비정비(非整備) 지대이며, 잡초·관목(灌木)·수림 등으로 이루어져, 올바르지 못한 숏(shot)을 포착하여 다음 타구(打球)를 어렵게 만들고 있다.
3. 그린(Green)
- 벙커(bunker; 미국식 영어로는 trap): 움푹 패인 곳에 모래가 깔려 있으며 볼을 칠 때에 모래 위에 클럽을 놓을 수 없어 그 곳에서 탈출하기 위한 샷이 매우 어려워진다.
- 워터해저드(water hazard): 바다·호소·하천·연못·고랑·크리크 등의 수역(水域). 비가 오거나 물이 넘쳐서 생긴 일시적인 물웅덩이는 캐주얼워터(casual water)라 하며, 해저드에는 포함되지 않는다.
자! 이제 경기 방법에 대해서 알아보자.
골프 경기는 홀의 시작인 티잉 그라운드(티잉 박스)에서 티 샷을 하여 그린의 10.8cm 홀 안으로 골프 공을 넣는 경기로 몇 타 만에 홀 안에 공을 넣을 수 있느냐를 겨루는 경기이다. 총 18홀이 있고, 각 홀에는 거리에 3~5까지의 기준 타수가 있다.
- 기준 타수에 넣으면 : 파(par) - 기분 타수보다 한번을 더 쳐서 넣으면 : 보기(bogey) - 2타 더 쳐서 넣으면 : 더블 보기(double bogey) - 3타 더 쳐서 넣으면 : 트리플 보기(triple bogey) - 4타 더 쳐서 넣으면 : 쿼드루플 보기(quadruple bogey) - 기준 파 수 만큼 더 쳤을 때는 : 더블 파 (double par)
- 기준 타수보다 한번을 적게 친 경우는 : 버디(birdie) - 2타 적게 치면 : 이글(Eagle) - 3타 적게 치면 : 앨버트로스(albatross) - 한번에 집어넣으면 : 홀인원(hole in one)
경기 형식은 다양하게 있지만, 보통 프로들의 경기에서는 1일 18홀, 총 4일 72홀 경기를 한다.
Part Four A는 골프이고, Part Four B는 당구/수영 입니다.

골프채는 손잡이 부분을 그립(grip)이라 하고, 그립과 헤드를 연결하는 샤프트(shaft)와 헤드로 이루어져 있다.

드라이버는 길이가 42~44인치 정도이고 공 치는 부분이 나무로 되어 있는 가장 긴 골프채이다. 홀의 첫 타에서 장타를 칠 때 사용된다. 홀의 첫 타는 보통 티 샷(tee shot)이라고 하고, 장타를 치기 위해서 1번 우드(드라이버-driver)가지고 주로 친다. 최근에는 헤드가 금속으로 되어 「메탈 우드」라고 불리 우는 클럽이 각광을 받고 있다. 첫 타에서 240을 쳤다고 하면 I hit my driver around 240 라고 하면 되다.

아이언은 헤드가 무겁고 로프트(loft - 골프채 머리 부분의 후방 경사)가 매우 작아 장타를 칠 때 주로 사용하는 손잡이가 긴 아이언 클럽이다.

셀 수 없는 경우 – I do exercise 나 I take exercise 처럼 do 나 take 를 사용하여 표현하며, exercises 라고 복수로 표현하지 않는다. 이때의 의미는 일반적으로 우리가 신체적, 정신적 건강을 위하여 운동하는 것을 의미하며, 수영이나 축구, 야구 등의 스포츠 활동도 포함하는 것이다. 예를 들어, Do at least 30 minutes exercise each day (하루에 최소 30분은 운동을 하세요), He never does exercise(그 사람은 운동을 안 해요), Do you take enough exercise?(운동을 충분히 하시나요?), My doctor recommended regular exercise(의사가 규칙적을 운동을 할 것을 권유했어요), I need some exercise(운동이 좀 필요해요)
셀 수 있는 경우 – I do exercises 라고 하며, 일련의 동작들로 이루어져 있는 운동이나 체조를 의미한다. 즉 신체의 특정 부위만을 움직여 강하게 하거나, 건강을 유지할 목적으로 하는 것을 의미한다. 위해서 의미하는 ‘그냥 운동’과는 조금 다르다. 보통 그 신체의 부위를 앞에 함께 사용하고, exercises 라고 복수 형태로 주로 사용한다. 예문을 통하여 그 차이를 한 번 느껴 보자. The doctor gave me some exercises to help with my back(그 의사는 제 등의 건강을 위해서 제 등을 운동 시켜 줬어요), This is a great exercise for the upper back(이 동작은 위쪽 등에 아주 좋은 운동이다), Metal exercises can help older people to sustain their mental abilities(정신 운동은 노인 분들이 정신 건강을 유지하는데 도움이 된다), He recommended the following exercises to increase circulation(그 사람이 혈액 순환 활성화에 도움이 된다고 다음과 같은 운동을 추천했어요)
동사 do 와 함께 사용하여, Basic exercises(기본 운동) Warm-up exercises(준비 운동) Breathing exercises(숨쉬기 운동) Relaxation exercises(정리 운동) Stretching exercises(맨손 체조) Chest exercises(가슴 운동) Leg exercises(다리 운동) Mental exercises(정신 운동) Physical exercises(신체 운동)
Do exercises가 학교 교실 상황에서는 ‘연습문제를 풀다’라는 의미가 되니 주의하자.
또한 exercise 는 동사로도 사용할 수 있다. It’s import to exercise on a regular basis(정규적으로 운동하는 것은 중요해요)
마지막으로, 보통 헬스 클럽에서 운동 기구를 가지고 운동하는 것은 work out 이라는 숙어 표현을 사용한다. I work out with weights twice a week(일 주일에 두 번씩 역기를 가지고 운동을 해요)
