패턴 따라잡기 [ Neither A nor B ] : A 도 아니고 B 도 아니다

안녕하십니까, 콰지모도입니다.

이번 시간에 다룰 내용은 바로 [ Neither A nor B ] 패턴입니다.

지난번에 공부한 [ Either A or B : A 이거나 B 이거나 ] 와는 완전히 다른 개념이입니다.

[ Neither A nor B ] 는 [ A 도 아니고 B 도 아니다 ] 라는 개념입니다.

즉,  [ Either A or B ] 앞에 [ Not ] 을 붙인 부정형인 것입니다.

그래서 [ Not ] 의 [ N ] 을 [ either, or ] 앞에 붙여서 [ Neither, nor ] 가 된 것이죠.

[ Neither ] 역시 [ Either : 어느 하나의 ] 와 마찬가지로 한번씩 보기는 보았지만, 생소한 느낌이 드는 단어라는 것이죠.

이상하게도 이러한 [ Either, Neither ] 같은 단어들는 거부감이 들지만, 그럴수록 사전을 더 찾아보자구요.

[ Neither ] 를 사전에서 찾아 보게되면, [ 어느 것도 ~ 아니다 ] 라는 [ 대명사 ] 입니다.

그래서 [ Neither ] 뒤에는 [ nor ] 가 항상 따라다니면서, [ 둘 중에 아무것도 아니다 ] 로 사용이 되는 것입니다.

다시 정리하면,

                    [ Neither A or B ] : A 도 아니고 B 도 아니다

알고 보니 별거 아니죠?  막상 해보면 쉽다는 겁니다.

기본 지식을 습득했으니 예문을 보면서 공부해 볼까요?

1. She neither ate nor drank for days.

    의역 : 그녀는 며칠 동안 먹지도 마시지도 않았다.

    ※ 시점이 과거이므로 [ eat 의 과거형인 ate ], [ drink 의 과거형인 drank ] 가 쓰였습니다. 

2. Neither she nor I don't have any plan for weekend.

    의역 : 그녀도 나도 주말에 아무런 계획이 없다.

3. The car is neither fast nor safe.

     의역 : 그 차는 빠르지도 안전하지도 않다.

4. He is neither tall nor small.

    의역 : 키가 크지도 작지도 않다

5. He has neither dream nor hope.

    의역 : 그는 꿈도 희망도 없다

6. She is neither pretty nor ugly, but just plain.

    의역 : 그녀는 예쁘지도 밉지도 않고 그냥 평범하다.

7. I can speak neither French nor English.
  

    의역 : 나는 불어도 영어도 못한다. 

설명이 별로 필요 없는 예문들입니다.

[ Neither ] 뒤에는 [ or ] 이 아니라 [ nor ] 라는 것을 꼭 기억하시기바랍니다.
