It is desirable to speak English mostly in the classroom. However, if we use English grammatical terminology in explaining grammars to the middle school students, they will find it quite hard to understand what we say. In this case, the eclectic method is more desirable, that is, both English and Korean can be used simultaneously.
During the introduction, talking about general affairs around us like the weather, current news events, home, and school is very meaningful for students. Students get used to English speaking, and they promote their listening ability.
The review of what they learned before is also very important. Repetition, and practice make students fluent in speaking English. Memorization is also important in learning English. Memorization of new words, phrases, and sentences is the basis of students' language ability. Especially, if a student memorizes the entire middle school textbook, his(her) capability of using English will be great not only in speaking but in reading and writing.
During the development portion of a lesson, most of the teachers play tapes to listen to a native speaker's pronunciation. However, as every classroom does not have a tape-recorder, teachers have to carry their own. Fortunately, we can use CD Roms with a projection TV these days. This makes it possible to listen to the native speaker's pronunciation every class.
The highlight of the class activity is the pattern practice and sentence-generating process. Usually when we practice a sentence pattern, we let students substitute some cue words for a word in a sentence. This method is a sort of habit-forming audio-lingual approach. In learning a foreign language, this habit forming is very important.
The stimulus-response activity can be compared to the Tae Kwon-do discipline. By repeating hundreds or thousands of the same posture, a Tae Kwon-do trainee can eventually develop a set of quick and effective movement. However, in learning a foreign language, the habit-forming training is not enough. When we meet a new situation, we have to communicate something suitable for the new environment. In this case, the application ability or the generative capability is required. The cognitive approach of teaching English based upon the transformational-generative grammar is the appropriate method in this case. In the development step of the above Teaching-Learning Plan, for example, I taught the students how to put the suffix --s or--es to any verbs. First I showed verbs which had been previously taught to the students like "eat", "write","teach","learn","drink","run","swim","play","study"---etc. Then I let the students make sentences containing these words.
When I taught be+adjective+noun construction, I showed some examples of sentences, and let the students say some new sentences using this structure.Speaking a foreign language is ,say, a procedure of creative and imaginative work.
It is a wonderful class activity to tell a story about the whole contents of what students learn in English. We can show a picture using OHP or photo-vision when we do it.
What do you think of teaching songs? Singing is a very good method of teaching English. It makes the classroom atmosphere comfortable and alive. Of course, students can learn English through this activity.
How can we relate vocabulary to the curiosity and interest of students? We choose some words, and explain the meaning of those words to the students by showing only the first letters for cues. According to my experience this process is a quite desirable method to improve the listening ability and to increase the vocabulary level of the students. When the break time comes, we can allow students to talk freely for one or two minutes in English. They can talk about anything. This process may help students feel more natural in speaking English.
I have told briefly about some teaching procedures of English. As a matter of course, there may be lots of other good ways to teach students effectively. In brief, we can take advantage of any good points of teaching methodology to promote the communicative competence of students in a classroom. Speaking a foreign language is a sort of creative procedure. Creativity can be attained in a cozy, comfortable and flexible atmosphere. Praise is better than scolding. When a teacher praises a student for a slight merit, he gets more motivated to participate in the class activity fully.
3.With a native Speaker of English
As the campaign of globalization is increasingly emphasized, the need to contact native speakers has become more and more urgent. Consequently, lots of native speakers have entered our education system. Even though the number of foreigners has got diminished recently due to the economic difficulties of our country, the "Let's-speak-with-native-speakers" trend seems to continue in the future. When a native speaker comes to our school, English teachers begin to have both hardship and opportunity. The lack of fluency of speaking English makes English teachers hesitant and shrank to speak at school.
They feel even frustrated to speak in front of many students and teachers. However, we cannot avoid the great wave of globalization. How can we overcome this difficulty? The only way is to promote the ability of communicative competence. I will talk about it in the following chapter. Foremost, native speakers give us good opportunities. If we take good advantage of the rare opportunity of speaking with native speakers, the fluency of our English speaking abilities can be improved greatly. Nevertheless, notwithstanding the good chance to talk with native speakers, we cannot improve the speaking ability if we don't have a strong motivation. It does not improve our speaking ability if we are merely in contact with native speakers. Strenuous practice with urgent desire can lead the way to being a good speaker of English. When we interpret, we need not pay attention to what a native speaker says in detail. What is important is the main idea of the native speaker's speech, and we only need to understand the speaker's overall intention. In addition to this, it is necessary to prepare various vocabulary in a notebook. It is desirable to collect lots of words which are used in our daily lives. For example, how will you say such words as “된장찌개”, “교무부장”,“생활 기록부”,or “교내 체육 대회?”
4.How to Improve the Communicative Competence of English Teachers?
Now, we know very well that the communicative ability of students depends upon the speaking capability of their English teachers. Therefore every teacher must try to seek the best ways to improve his speaking ability. However, as all of us feel, it is very hard to speak English fluently. There may be a lot of good ways to improve our communicative ability. I want to talk about several efficient ways to practice English in our daily lives. My experience tells me that perhaps the best English reading material is the domestic-published English newspapers like "The Korean Herald", or "The Korean Times." They present us with almost everything we need to enhance our ability of using English. First of all, those newspapers deal with matters that occurred or are occurring at the present time. We are fully familiar with current events, for we read Korean newspapers or watch TV every day. Therefore, we have the full background knowledge about those matters. Consequently, we do not need a lot of effort to understand and memorize vocabulary or phrases concerning current occurrences. We don't need to read all of the pages of those English newspapers, because every day we are busy, tired, and we don't have enough time. The best pages for English teachers may be the front and editorial pages. On the front page, there are a lot of current political and economic articles. On the editorial page, there are editorials and opinions of various persons. When we read the front page, we understand political and economic matters. There are some social affairs, too. We can thus memorize lots of vocabulary, phrases, and sentences. When we read editorials, we can understand any political, economic, social, and cultural issues deeply and comprehensively. When we read the "opinion" articles, we can contact sharp criticisms on the current problematic issues. What I want to recommend strongly is the counselling article of "Dear Abby" of the Korean Times and "Dear Ann Landers" of the Korean Herald. These articles with the help of the great American women counsellors deal with some private affairs of Americans. Those columns are, I think, the best, if we want to understand the American way of life and thinking.
Our classroom activity is itself the best way to increase our speaking ability of English. When we tell students to memorize the contents of textbooks, we learn them by heart, too. When we tell students the synopsis of lessons, this activity itself improves our speaking ability, too. When we explain some words in English, this explanation helps us to be creative in speaking.
If we want to speak English well with a foreigner, it is necessary to have a large quantity of background knowledge. We are not sure about what subject we are going to converse. Therefore we need to enlarge the horizontal limit of our knowledge and information to the infinity. It is quite important to read lots of books if we want to be a good English speaker.
Another good way to practice English is, of course, to use the internet. The ultra-modern electronic apparatus enables us to increase the volume of our knowledge greatly. Lastly, I want to emphasize the importance of listening. We usually say that it is more difficult to listen well than to speak well. It is, in a sense, true. If we understand well what native speakers say, we manage to express ourselves in a certain way.
Then how can we improve our listening ability? Fortunately, there are several good channels on cable TV in Korea. CNN or Arirang TV, for example, present many wonderful programs to us. Particularly, we can understand well what the announcers say on Arirang TV, for we share the common domestic cultural background. There are some good drama programs with English captions on Arirang TV.
In conclusion, let's say once again that the communicative ability of students depend upon the speaking ability of teachers.
5.Comprehensive Study of English
As the society changes rapidly, the amount of knowledge and information explode surprisingly these days. The globalization trend, and the emphasis upon the communicative competence urges us, English teachers, not to reside peacefully on the stagnant place, but to advance strenuously. Futhermore, in the light of the life-long education, English teachers need to study hard every day. I think that when we study at least one hour or thirty minutes a day, we can keep up with the present level of other English teachers. For every day dialogue, let's read dialogue books and practice English conversation every day. For vocabulary, let's collect new words and make a notebook. For grammar, let's read any grammar books of high school English. For comprehension, let's read any English essays, novels, or short stories. For composition, let's read any composition books and practice translating. There is a proverb, "Practice makes perfect." We do not need to study for a long time every day, and we cannot do so because we are tired and busy every day. However, if we make it a rule to study at least one hour or 30 minutes every day, the comprehensive ability of using English will become greater and greater day by
day.

We had rain today. The rainy season has come. Rain do us both good

glad when it rains. However, too much rain causes flood. Lots of people
were drowned to death due to the flood last year. I wish we will have
no flood this year. I like not only spring but also summer among four
seasons. Though I don't like the sea, I fairly like valleys with much
water. When I am with cold and clean water in a green mountain,
I feel as though I were a fairy.

He met the rabbit in the mountain and he allured the rabbit with all the good words. At last they went to the Sea Palace, and they met the Dragon King. He asked the rabbit to give him the liver. *How to Study English Well?
♤다음 글은 1997년 ** 중학교 校紙 ** 제 1호에 실린 내용입니다.
English is the international language. Every country tries hard to teach English to the young students. If we speak English well, we can communicate with any person all over the world. In our country, the third graders of elementary school began to study English for the first time from March of this semester. The beginning year of learning English gets earlier and earlier these days. For example, they say the first graders of elementary school begin to study English in Austria. English as a means of globalization becomes more and more important today. Nowadays English has also become the means of success. Most great companies choose new members through English dialogue test in our country. The members of companies usually have meetings in English. In that case, if you can't speak English, how can you expect to succeed?
Then, what are the good ways of learning English well? There is a proverb that there is no royal road to learning. Probably only practice and memorization would be the best way of learning English. However, I would like to say some more effective ways to you.
First, Let's memorize all the sentences in the textbook. Memorization gives us the ability of speaking and writing English. I hear that a certain university makes it a rule to make the students memorize the textbooks of middle school. Secondly, let's practice English every day. There is saying that "practice makes perfect." Let's read our English textbook loudly several times and try to listen to the native speaker's reading every day. We can correct our bad pronunciation in doing so.
Third, let's memorize the basic words and idioms every day. It is better to pronounce the new words and write them on the exercise notebook when we memorize them. Simple memorization makes us quite easy to forget the new words. Our brain works more efficiently when it works with bodily movement.
Fourthly, let's practice English dialogue with foreigners, our English teachers, or our friends. Actually it is rather hard to have a chance to talk to a native speaker of English. However, we are somewhat fortunate to be with Mindy, the American teacher of English in our school. So, let's try to talk to her in the classroom.
There are many Koreans who can speak English well around us. Let's try to practice English with them. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Fluency is more important than correctness in speaking English.
Last but not least, let's try to listen to any good programs of radio or TV.
For example, O Seong-sik's "Good Morning Pops" is quite a good radio program. It helps us understand not only pop songs, but many other good things of English. The education programs of EBS are also good programs for us. Now the summer vacation is near at hand. When the summer vacation comes, let's make a plan to practice English hard. Summer vacation is the best opportunity to practice English. Thank you.
