Session 1. Conversation
I think we are using too many disposable items these days.
You're absolutely right. We need to stop using disposable plastic plates and Styrofoam cups.
Yes. Plastic and Styrofoam take a long time to decompose.
That's correct. We need to use glass or ceramic instead.
That way we can reduce waste in landfills.
We can also save some money by doing so.
In addition, we should avoid using aerosol cans. They are not recyclable.
Oh, I thought they were recyclable.
No, they are not. Pump spray bottles are recyclable.
A: I think we are using too many disposable items these days.(요즘 우리는 1회용 제품을 너무 많이 사용하는 것 같습니다.)
B: You're absolutely right.(그렇고 말고요.) We need to stop using disposable plastic plates and Styrofoam cups.(1회용 플라스틱 접시와 스티로폼 컵을 그만 사용해야겠어요.)
A: Yes. Plastic and Styrofoam take a long time to decompose.(네.
* take a long time:
B: That's correct. We need to use glass or ceramic instead.(맞아요.
A: That way we can reduce waste in landfills.(그렇게 하면 쓰레기 매립지로 가는 쓰레기를 줄일 수 있어요.)
B: We can also save some money by doing so.(그렇게 함으로써 돈도 절약할 수 있어요.)
A: In addition, we should avoid using aerosol cans.(그리고, 가스 충전식 분무용기의 제품을 사용하는 것을 피해야 합니다.) They are not recyclable.(그 것들은 재활용이 안되니까요.)
B: Oh, I thought they were recyclable.(아, 저는 그것들이 재활용 가능한 것인 줄 알았어요.)
A: No, they are not. Pump spray bottles are recyclable.(아뇨, 그렇지 않습니다.
session 2. Read & Talk.
Advice to a young man.
by Ernest Hemingway. from 성문종합영어(1992년판), p. 115
We cannot travel every path. Sussess must be won along one line. We must make our business the one life purpose to which every other must be subordinate. I hate a thing done by halves. If it be right, do it boldly: if it be wrong, leave it undone.
To live with an ideal is a successful life. It is not what one does, but what one tries to do, that makes a man strong. "Eternal vigilance." it has been said, "is the price of liberty." With equal truth it may be said, "Unceasing effort is the price of success."
If we do not work with all our might, others will; and they will defeat us in the race, and pick the prize from our grasp. Success grows less and less dependent on luck and chance.
Self-distrust is the cause of most of our failures. The great and indispensable help to success is character. Character is crystallized habit, the result of training and conviction.
