Wed. 18. Age.
[Extra Topics for Study Groups]
1. Could you be friends with someone much younger or older? Why or why not?
2. How has your perception of age changed as you have gotten older?
3. Why do you think age is considered so important in many cultures?
STEP 1
Talk about how people think about one’s age in Korean culture.
[Response]
Age is an important factor in Korean culture. When Koreans meet someone for the first time, they wonder about the person’s age. It’s because Korean culture affords respect to older people. Age also comes into play in romantic relationships. In most couples, the man is older. However, that trend is being reversed these days. Couples in which the woman is older are growing in number. This culture that puts an emphasis on age has some benefits. However, a drawback is that some people try to have their way just because they are older.

[Response]
I sometimes feel like I am getting on in years. I feel that way most often when I can’t understand popular catchphrases that are all the rage these days. I also feel old when I don’t know my way around devices like mobile phones. Sometimes, I can’t figure out how to use the latest features. I have to ask someone to give me a hand. I feel old when I easily get tuckered out, because my physical fitness is not what it once was. Finally, I feel old when I try to remember something and draw a blank, or when I can’t commit something to memory.
