RM1 for warm water: Restaurant owner faces fine for not displaying price
GEORGE TOWN: A restaurant owner in Tanjung Tokong here, who charged RM1 for a glass of warm water, now faces a fine of up to RM15,000 for not displaying the price of the drink.
The state Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Ministry sent two officers undercover on Monday to check following a complaint from a customer.
"True enough, they were charged RM1 each for a glass of warm water. The price was not stated in the menu," the division's enforcement chief M. Gunaselan said Tuesday.
He said the customer complained he was charged RM1 for warm water even though he had ordered other food.
Gunaselan said the restaurateur, who is in his 30s, could be penalised under the Price Control Act 1946.
"The individual can be fined up to RM15,000 or face a maximum of two years' jail, or both, while the company can be fined up to RM25,000," he said.
Gunaselan urged traders, especially restaurateurs and food stall owners, to display the prices of food and drinks clearly.
"Although food and drinks are not listed as controlled items, traders should charge reasonable prices," he said.
