Exhibiting Tibet's 'natural and pure beauty'
| |||||
Mysterious. Innocent. Vast. These are some of the words Johan Depraetere and his wife Kyoung Kim use to describe the land and people of Tibet. From July 21 to July 30 the couple embarked on a long-awaited journey to the roof of the world, where they say they fell in love with the landscape and the beautiful smiles of its people. The couple, who have been married for just over a year, were so touched by the innocence and pureness of Tibetan children, they decided to hold a photography exhibition in Seoul, with all proceeds going to Tibetan children in need. The exhibition opening will be held Friday Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Red Garage wine bar in Samcheong Dong. The photographs will be displayed until Oct. 12. A postcard booklet will be available for purchase for 10,000 won and the funds we be used to buy winter uniforms for the children in one Tibetan orphanage in Lhasa and one poor school in the countryside. Following is an interview with the couple. Korea Herald: Did you learn anything about yourself when you visited Tibet? Johan: How lucky we are with our current life; and that we do not need to have much - especially material things - to be happy, as long as our mind is at peace. It made my desire to obtain a peaceful mind stronger; and I discovered that I have some limited talent to take pictures (with just a point and shoot camera). Kyoung: I needed more time to adjust to the altitude and it was my first time to visit a country where traveling is challenging. KH: Why did you go to Tibet? What sets Tibet apart from the rest of Asia? Kyoung: I had wanted to go to Tibet for a long time. It is a mysterious place. Johan: I love to explore and experience different cultures (I guess I have visited over 60 countries by now); Tibet has been on the top of my list for a long time because of its mysterious aura, history, religion, and mountains - about 10 years ago I visited Northern Pakistan and saw the amazing Himalayas for the first time. The mountains and the culture of the tribal areas made a lasting impression on me. I hoped to find something similar in Tibet.
KH: What about Tibet is beautiful? Kyoung: Deep blue skies and the eyes of the Tibetan people, they are clear and reflect their soul. Despite being poor, Tibetan people are rich and proud. Johan: Tibetan people have a natural and pure beauty and the vastness of its nature is unique. It is never ending and never stops to amaze. KH: What prompted the idea to hold an exhibition with the proceeds going to Tibetan children? Kyoung: Tibetan children and our trip to Tibet gave us lots of joy and happiness. We like the innocence and "pureness" of Tibetan children and their eyes radiate with wisdom; this is one way to give something back to them. Johan: I always look for ways to help or support children around the world who really need it. I have been supporting Plan International for over 20 years and last year we started to support a Korean orphanage for disabled children. This new initiative is a way to involve more people, and to help more children while showing "our Tibet" to people in Korea KH: Did you meet any Tibetan children on your travels there? How did you feel about their conditions? Is there anything that "we" (Westerners and Koreans) can do to help? Johan: We saw many Tibetan children - they look very dirty, in terms of not having access to bathing facilities. Our guide told us, we guess jokingly, that they wash themselves twice a year. Once you leave Tibet you (realize) that the society is mostly agricultural and relatively poor. At one point we stopped along the road to buy a watermelon from some children - some of the pictures are from there. They were not shy or timid, and were very engaging, despite their young age and the inability to communicate with us. KH: Did you make any interpersonal connections there (with Tibetans)? Johan: We did, but not many as we wanted to. Our trip was too short and our travel schedule too intense. We spent most of our time with our Tibetan guide. He was able to provide to give us with some real stories and insights about the culture. For example, he taught us the meaning of polyandry as he and his two brothers shared one wife - he, however, escaped and remarried; the difficult relationship with the Chinese; his life as a monk in India, etc. You probably need at least a month to explore and experience Tibet at a deeper level. One week provides only a number of vignettes and impressions. KH: What was your favorite place in Tibet? Kyoung: The drive on a "short-cut" dirt road (although it took more than two hours) to get to Gyantse - I saw many different landscapes; the color of the mountains, skies, the thunderstorms, it was very peaceful. There was nothing there, just nature - I felt we were driving to find a special treasure. Johan: The Barkhor in Lhasa - and the murals of the monasteries. For me the Barkhor captures the essence of Tibet - seeing the many pilgrims, smelling the incense, wandering around in the old small streets. The majority of the murals in the monasteries are hidden in darkness, however, some of them are amazingly beautiful and represent a proxy of how special Tibet must have been in the past. KH: What is your most treasured memory? Kyoung: the deep blue skies and the eyes of the Tibetan people Johan: In the middle of nowhere, a yak farmer appeared out of nowhere with his amazing looking animals - he looked about 45 but is probably only 35 years old - his smile and eyes were so radiant - and off he disappeared again into his world, which is so different from the one we know. This, in a way, reminded me of the story of "the Alchemist" of Pablo Coelho.
KH: Why did you originally move to Korea? Johan: I joined the Samsung Global Strategy Group (www. sgsg.samsung.com) back in May 2003. I decided that moving to Asia and working for one of the leading technology companies in the world was a great opportunity. KH: What do you do now? Johan: I have been working for the Corporate Auditing team of Samsung Electronics for the last three years. KH: What is special for you about Korea? Johan: Korea is one of the most "Asian" countries. Confucian influence remains strong, and there are few foreigners; this makes living and working in Korea a very unique, enriching and at the same time challenging experience. Korean people are warm hearted and emotional which makes it a nice place to live. The convenience and service in Seoul are both amazing. KH: Do you recommend Tibet as a travel destination? Johan: Absolutely, and the sooner the better as the Chinese have discovered Tibet and it is losing its uniqueness.
