첫댓글 "" When tyrants cannot prevail by craft, they burst forth into open rage"" 이것 외에 제 기억으로는 폭군의 말은 순종하지말라 그리해야 하나님의 축복을 받지 않느냐 하는 취지의 노트가 있었는데 제가 지금은 찾지 못하겠습니다.

The note for Exodus 1:19 says the following of the Hebrew midwives who disobeyed the Pharaoh in refusing to kill
    Hebrew boy-children at birth:
“ Their disobedience herein was lawful, but their dissembling evil. ”
The very notion that the disobedience of a royal command might be a lawful act would be anathema to a king
who believed that he ruled by divine right and answered only to God and not to any of his subjects.
The footnote for Exodus 1:22 would surely have been worse:
“ When tyrants cannot prevail by craft, they burst forth into open rage. ”

kING James himself thought he was a tyrant!

In Deuteronomy 16:18 we read, “Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy cities… ;” the note says, “He gave authority to that people for a time to choose themselves magistrates.

Leaders must meditate the Bible day and night!

<< Joshua 2:8 commands the Hebrews to meditate on the book of the law of the Lord day and night; the note says, “Showing that it was not possible to govern well, without continual study of God’s word>>

The note to Proverbs 26:1 says the righteous man “needeth not to flatter the ruler: for what God hath appointed, that shall come to him.” --- I can imagine that the people behind Geneva Bible translation may have quite democratic idea and were bold enough to confront the monarchy system.

religion in James' time was not what it is today. In that era, religion was controlled by the government. If someone lived in Spain at the time, he had three religious "choices":

    1. Roman Catholicism
    2. Silence.
    3. The Inquisition.

The third "option" was reserved for "heretics," or people who didn't think the way the government wanted them to. To governments of that era heresy and treason were synonymous.

England wasn't much different. From the time of Henry VIII on, an Englishman had three choices:

    1. Anglican Church.
    2. Silence.
    3. The rack, burning at the stake,

    -- True!
