Gen 26:12-25 Decisions that Determine Fate
Main v. 22
He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, "Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land."
Have you ever made decisions that put your life on the line?
Then, let's take a look at what decisions Isaac made in order to survive.
Isaac became very rich in the land of Gerar, where he escaped from the famine.
The Philistines who saw this were jealous. They stopped up the well that their father Abraham had dug and filled it with soil. They tell Isaac to leave the Philistines.
It happened that he had to fight the Philistines by risking his fate on Isaac's life. Because they blocked the well, the lifeline of man.
So, what decision did he face with his life? I'm going to call it like this:
First, the decision of ‘Esek’
The first name of the well dug by Isaac is ‘Esek’. This means ‘to oppress, to rob, to quarrel’.
While Isaac was digging a well called Esek, a fight broke out with the shepherds of Gerar. The quarrel arises because they oppress and rob.
Here's one thing we need to know. Even if Isaac came to Gerar because of the famine, that would be a betrayal of God's will to give Canaan as an inheritance (vv. 2-5).
Therefore, the quarrel in ‘Esek’ is the first case in which Isaac, who violated God’s command and left, had to risk his first destiny.
Second, the decision of ‘Sitnah’
Isaac digs a second well.
The name of the second well is 'Sitnah', which means enmity or enemy. It means that Satan, the hindrance is waiting.
We can see that many unexpected difficulties follow on the way to go against God's command. Here, too, Isaac quarreled with the shepherds of Gerar.
Third, the decision of ‘Rehoboth’
The name of the third well was ‘Rehoboth’. This means 'a wide space', that is, 'to prosper'.
From the names of these wells, we can clearly guess the sorrow and suffering Isaac went through in a foreign land.
Here Isaac no longer quarreled with the Philistines over the well. Not everything is solved by fighting.
Now, he is mature enough to yield and give up.
Matthew 5:5 says. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth”).
Isaac gave up, but God gave him a bigger one. As a result of Isaac's perseverance, he rather shouted victory, saying, "Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land."
After that, Isaac goes back to Beersheba, where he lived with his father Abraham.
'Sheba' has the meaning of an oath, but also has the meaning of seven. Therefore, Beersheba means 'seven springs' in English.
Isaac enjoyed the blessing of occupying the seven wells. He had a hard time digging a well or two. But he gave up strife and was obedient and meek, and God blessed him with seven wells.
The message of this land is always opaque.
However, like Isaac, there are times when you need to make a decision to dig a well by risking your destiny. Then, it tells us that there will be days when we taste the good water called ‘Rehoboth’.
