How to overcome numbness in the legs?
Whether meditating, hwadu meditation, or sitting meditation, numbness in the legs is the first barrier that anyone must go through. Leg numbness varies in intensity from person to person. Some pass without feeling great pain, while others feel unbearable pain. This is because each person has a different body type and the degree of firmness of the body is different.
Numbness in the legs is closely related to blood circulation. A practitioner with poor blood circulation to the lower body will experience severe numbness in the legs, while a practitioner with good circulation will pass without feeling great pain. When I teach sitting meditation to young children, they do not complain that their legs are numb even if they sit cross-legged for an hour. However, the older you get or the poorer your health is, the stronger the intensity of pickling your legs becomes.
At the beginning of the meditation, it is desirable to take the position that feels most comfortable for your body. Those who can do the full lotus position from the beginning do the full lotus position, those who are comfortable with the full lotus position do the half lotus position, and those who are comfortable cross-legged can do so. No matter which position you take, if the numbness in your legs goes away with time, you should be able to sit in the lotus position.
If you forcibly sit in the lotus position while your body is stiff, your body will gradually become stiff and unbearable. When your leg feels numb, you can quietly change your leg. It's good to grit your teeth from the beginning and endure it, but it's better not to overdo it. Gradually increase the time while holding out until you can tolerate it. You will feel calm as your stiff body relaxes. This will give you confidence in sitting practice. If you feel numbness in your legs, keep your mind strong on dangeon without distraction. The moment you become conscious of the feeling of “it hurts,” the pain feels more and more intense. Anyway, it is a mountain that anyone who is practicing for the first time must overcome without exception.
For those who cannot do sitting practice due to leg numbness, it is recommended that you do not overdo it and start with sitting practice. You can roll a cushion behind your belly button, lie down, and breathe slowly. After relaxing your body in spiral meditation, try sitting practice.
