Most SNU freshmen come from the well-off families chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2013/10/31/2013103100507.html
The parents of freshmen at the prestigious Seoul National University are better educated than the average Korean parent, with many of the fathers in white-collar jobs. Democratic Party lawmaker An Min-suk last week cited an SNU report showing that the fathers of 83.1 percent and the mothers of 72 percent of the 2,353 freshmen at the university have at least a university degree.
According to the 2010 census, across the country only 43.2 percent of adults have university degrees, which means the parents of SNU freshmen are nearly twice as educated as the average. Some 60 percent of the freshmen have fathers who are government workers, business managers or executives and professionals like doctors and lawyers. Another 20 percent work in the service or retail sectors. Most of their mothers are housewives (48.4 percent), followed by service-sector staff (14 percent), specialists (12.2 percent) and office workers (11 percent). "The fact that fewer children of farmers or poorer families gain admission at SNU shows that it's getting more difficult to climb the social ladder," An said. It seems social inequality is getting worse as even academic level is "inherited."

Did US wiretap president Park? http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2013/10/28/2013102801960.html
The government has asked Washington to confirm whether Korean presidents were among 35 world leaders who were the target of wiretapping by the U.S. National Security Agency in 2006. A Foreign Ministry official said the Korean Embassy in Washington has sought clarification from the U.S. government.
The allegation arises from an investigation by a German magazine that revealed that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been the victim of wiretapping by the NSA for a decade and that 34 other world leaders were also targeted. If the allegations are confirmed, the official warned Seoul will take "strong" measures. After a flood of revelations that U.S. secret services snooped into the electronic communications of billions of people around the world, including close allies, the U.S. government now faces demands for a radical overhaul of its information-gathering activities. But the official said Seoul is merely seeking clarification and has no evidence that Korean presidents were bugged. The official added Washington has not yet responded and it is unclear whether it will.
Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian reporter who is working on documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, has said Korea was on the list of countries whose leaders were targets of electronic eavesdropping.
