A Mountain Bird
by D.J. YOON
"Changbae, Look over there."
"Where?"
I could see a bird nest
When I looked at where Hyosaeng is pointing
On the branch of a pine tree
"Changbae, Let’s go up there
To see if there are any bird eggs in it."
Hyosaeng made me lie down on the ground
Stepping on my back
Grabbing the branch of the tree
Climbing up the tree
Then he took out bird eggs from the nest
"Changbae, take this
One, two, three, four. There are four in all.“
He threw the eggs to me
While sitting on the pine tree branch
One by one
It was then
Coming out of nowhere
A bird crying, kiyo, kiyo
When I looked up in the sky
Over our heads was spinning
A mountain bird
"Hyosaeng, what are you going to do with these eggs?"
"What do you mean?"
"It must be a mother bird. She's spinning on and on over us.”
"Don't you want bird eggs?"
"No, no. It's not like that, but ..."
"Then what?"
“...”
It was the day
We went up in the mountain behind our village
To pick up some raspberries with Hyosaeng
It was the day
We got little raspberries
The mother bird was still crying on, kiyo, kiyo
After we came down from the mountain
Putting my hand into the pocket and touching the bird eggs
I looked up around the mountain
Over and over again
Appreciation Review
From Changbae's point of view, the mother bird's cry would have sounded even more painful.
It’s because he went to the mountain to pick up some raspberries, not to steal bird eggs.
As for him, it might have been very embarrassing to unexpectedly cause great suffering on the mother bird.
Changbae must have been very painful with a pang of conscience.
As for Hyosaeng, it would have been a simple idea to steal a bird's eggs because he couldn't get the raspberries he was trying to pick on that day. Hyosaeng won’t hear the mother bird's cry at all, while it is very loud for Changbae. There is no guilty consciousness for Hyosaeng.
From Changbae's perspective, he doesn't have the courage to go against Hyosaeng.
He doesn't have the guts to fight for justice, either.
And he doesn't want to stand up against Hyosaeng.
However, the mother bird's cry still lingers in his ears.
So he keeps looking up the mountain.
As for Hyosaeng, Changbae might have looked pathetic when he saw him hesitating.
He’d have thought, "Just bird eggs!" He doesn’t hear the mother bird howling, and doesn't care at all.
As for the mother bird, something happened like a bolt from the blue sky. She lost all four of her eggs while away for a while.
What could be more frightening and terrible than this?
She doesn't know what to do with so much pain and sadness, just hovering over the mountain and crying.
