이러한 형용사에는 interesting/interested,
boring/bored, exciting/excited, confusing/confused,
worrying/worried 등이 있다.

I know a wood where you can find wild strawberries.
Can you suggest a time when it will be convenient to meet?
Mexico City, which has a population of over 10 million, is probably
the fastest growing city in the world.
Adequate pain control has been an option since 1989, when Texas
became the first of several states to pass an Intractable Pain Act.

Opening the drawer he took out a revolver.
He rode away whistling.
He went out, slamming the door.
He fired, wounding one of the bandits.

(=If I had gone, ...)
Should you see John, give my best regards to him.
(=If you should see John, ...)
15.동명사

I am annoyed about John's forgetting to pay.
Do you mind me making a suggestion?
the designing of a new factory(Not: *the designing a new factory)

(1) Because I didn't know what to do, I telephoned the police.
(2) Not knowing what to do, I telephoned the police.

(2)의 not knowing what to do를 분사구문이라 한다.
(3) Nobody having any more to say, the meeting was closed.

(4) With Peter working in Birmingham and Luch travelling most of
the week, the house seems pretty empty.

The streets are swept every day.
You'll be met at the station.
He is suspected of receiving stolen goods.
The house next door has been bought.

Where but to think is to be full of sorrow(그저 생각만 해도 슬픔이

He was about to retire.
There was nothing left to us but to go.
동사에는 be, seem appear, look, sound, taste, feel, smell 등이 있다.
She is/seems/feels nice.

We leave London at 10:00 next Tuesday and arrive in Paris at
13:00.
There's no more bread.(양)
He's no more a genius than I am.(정도)
no more는 한때는 그랬으나 지금은 그렇지 않다는 의미로 시간에 대해 쓰이지 않으며, 그 경우엔 not ... any more, no longer(주로 동사 앞), not ... any longer를 쓴다.
Annie doesn't live here any more.
I no longer support the Conservative Party.
36. ① sort of, kind of
Those sort of cars are tremendously expensive to run.
Do you smoke these kind of cigarettes?
car, this kind of cigarette처럼 단수형을 쓰거나, cars of that sort,
cars like that을 쓰기도 한다.
I sort of thought you might forget.
Her eyes are kind of greenish-gold.
Sometimes I sort of wonder whether I shouldn't sort of get a job.
If he runs he'll get there in time.
The cat will scratch you if you pull her tail.
(1) if + 현재, may/might (가능성)
If the fog gets thicker the plane may/might be diverted.
(2) if + 현재, may/can (허락, 능력)
If it stops snowing we can go out.
(3) if + 현재, must/should/명령 표현
If you want to lose weight eat less bread.
(4) if + 현재, 현재
If you heat ice it turns to water.
If you are staying for another night I'll ask the manager to give
you a better room.
(6) if + 현재완료
If you have finished dinner I'll ask the waiter for the bill.
It looks as if/though it's going to rain.
as if나 as though 다음에 과거시제가 와서 현재사실의 반대를 나타낸다.
You look as if you've been running.
You look as if you'd seen a ghost.
She looks almost as if she were drunk.
He looked at me as if I were mad.
The man (whom) I saw told me to come back today.
The ladder which I was standing on began to slip.
People (who were) waiting for the bus often sheltered in my
doorway.
Many of the people (who were) questioned refused to answer.
Passengers traveling on this bus buy their tickets in books.
People wishing to go on the tour had to book.
Bill, wanting to make an impression on Ann, took her to the party.
40.that과 those는 앞에서 언급한 명사를 대신하여 쓰는데, the one,
The pronunciation of Japanese is simple compared with that of
Korean.
cf. If you want to buy an electric heater, you may be interested in
this one in the window.
The blonde girls I saw were older than those who were dancing
with.
cf. The blonde girl I saw was older than the one you were dancing
with.
The blonde girl I saw was older than that you were dancing with.

41.이유를 나타내는 부사절은 because, as, sine, if 등으로 시작된다.
We camped there because it was too dark to go on.
As we hadn't any money we couldn't buy anything to eat.
Since you won't take advice there is no point in asking for it.
If you wanted to go to sea, why didn't you?
It was too dark to go on, so we camped there.
We hadn't any money, therefore we couldn't buy anything to eat.
The delegate from Finland has not yet arrive; we have therefore
decided to postpone the meeting till tomorrow morning.
Every professional violinist practices for several hours a day.
Each violinist has his own way of playing the Beethoven concerto.
You look more beautiful each/every time I see you.
almost every month, every single one without exception의 경우처럼 전체를 강조하고자 할 때는
each를 쓰지 않는다.
Each sex has its own physical and psychological characteristics.
Every sex has its own physical and psychological
characteristics.(×)
Each of my aunts gave me socks for Christmas.
Every of my aunts gave me socks for Christmas. (×)
My sisters have each married businessmen.
Knowing that he wouldn't be able to buy food on his journey he
took large supplies with him. (=As he knew ...)
Being a student he was naturally interested in museums.
The day being fine, we decided to go swimming.
I fell, striking my head against the door and cutting it.
(=I fell, and struck my head ...)
Waiting for a bus a brick fell on my head. (×)
As I was waiting for a bus a brick fell on my head.
Only you could do a thing like that.
Only my mother really understands me.
I only like people who like me.[only가 people을 수식]
The bus only runs on Tuesdays.[Tuesdays
She only talks like that when she's nerverous.(when 이하를 수식)
I've only been to India once.[once
I only kissed your sister last night.
= I didn't do anything else to her.
= I didn't kiss anybody else last night.
= Last night was the only time I kissed her.
They make only malt whishky in this distillery.[malt whisky
I've been camping only in Ireland. [in Ireland
Your sister was the only girl I kissed last night. [girl
Last night was the only time I kissed your sister. [time을 수식]
I saw her only yesterday.
[Excerpt from Swan 1980]
Excuse me, could I get past?[
Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the station?[
Oh, sorry, did I step on your foot?[사과]
sorry 대신 흔히 I beg your parden, Parden me를 쓴다.
What? Pardon?, Pardon me? Please?
It's the plumber at the door. Sorry? I said it's the plumber.
See you on Tuesday. What? See you on Tuesday.
You're going deaf? I beg your pardon?
I'm not sure whether/if I'll have time.
I wonder whether/if you've got any letters for me.
Let me know whether (if) you can come or not.
The directors have not decided whether they will recommend a
dividend or hold over the profits.
We discussed whether we should close the shop.
I haven't settled the questions of whether I'll go back home.
She doesn't know whether to get married now or wait.
Whether we can stay with my mother is another matter.
47. look (at), watch, see는 서로 유사한 뜻을 갖지만 구별되어 쓰인다.
I suddenly saw a spder on the ceiling.
I waved at my father, but he didn't even see me.
I looked but could see nothing.(정신 집중하여 바라 보았으나 시각적으로 들어 오는 것이 없었다.)
He looked at her with his eyes full love.
Look carefully at this--I think it's important.
Watch that man -- I want to know everything he does.
I usually spend Saturday afternoon watching a football match.
Did you watch 'The Avengers' last night? (TV)
Have you seen 'Last Tango in Paris'?
We saw an extraordinary production of 'Hamlet' last summer.
5. see는 대개 진행형에 스지 않으며, can이나 could와 함께 쓰인다.
I can see somebody coming.
I am seeing ... (X)
Suddenly I heard a strange noise.
I heard some people passing in the street.
Can you hear me?
Listen carefully, please.
I heard them talking in the next room, but I didn't really listen to
what they were saying.
Did you hear Jack's talk on Tuesday?
I heard Oistrackh play the Mendelsshohn concerto last night.
I spent the night listening to to records.(공연이 아니라 혼자
I can hear somebody coming.
They're a nice family, (al)though I don't like young Sandra much.
