On December 11, 1941, the Hitler Government declared war against the
United States. By this act Hitler evidently wanted to accomplish two things.
First, he wanted to show that Germany, ignoring her losses, was becoming even
stronger, and was capable of carrying on the war not only against the Soviet
Union and Britain, but against the United States as well. Second, he wanted to
quickly push Japan into action against the USA in order to ensure that the United
States would not be involved in the war against Germany in Europe. When
Stalin heard the news, he smiled ironically:
“Interesting… What forces and what resources can Germany use in fighting
against the United States? For this kind of war she has neither long-distance air
strength, nor appropriate naval strength.”
I was often asked how it was that the Soviet troops managed to defeat the
powerful German groupings near Moscow and in conditions of severe winter
drive what remained of them back west.
The Germans’ defeat near Moscow has been described by many authors and,
on the whole, correctly. However, I as former Commander of the Western Front,
would like to give my own view of that battle.
As is known, when it began Operation Typhoon on the Moscow sector the
German Command planned to rout the Soviet forces in the Vyazma-Moscow and
the Bryansk-Moscow sectors, and outflank Moscow to the north and south so
they could seize the city as soon as possible. The enemy had intended to achieve
that strategic aim in two consecutive stages by double envelopment: during the
first, he planned to envelop and rout our troops in the area of Bryansk and
Vyazma; while during the second he intended to envelop and capture Moscow
by skirting it with the armoured units from the northwest via Klin and Kalinin,
and from the south, via Tula and Kashira, completing the strategic pincer
movement in the area of Noginsk.
However, when they were preparing this very complex operation the
German Command woefully miscalculated in estimating the necessary
manpower and materiel. It had seriously underrated the capabilities of the Red
Army, and overrated those of its own troops.
The forces concentrated by the German Command carried only enough
punch to break through our defence line at Vyazma and Bryansk, and to press
back the forces of the Western and Kalinin Fronts to a line running through
Kalinin, Yakhroma, Krasnaya Polyana, Kryukovo, the rivers Nara and Oka, Tula
and Kashira.
As a result, although he attained his immediate objective in early October,
the enemy was not able to carry out the second stage of Operation Typhoon.
There were also considerable defects in the build-up of the striking forces for
carrying out the second stage. The enemy flank forces were not strong enough,
particularly those operating near Tula, and included few all-arms units. Given
the conditions counting on armour alone was not justified. The German
armoured troops were worn out and greatly depleted —they had lost their
fighting value. The German Command failed to strike a simultaneous blow in
the centre of our Front, although its forces were sufficient for that. This
circumstance enabled us to move all our reserves freely, including divisional
reserves, to the Front’s flanks, where the fighting was the fiercest, and send them
into action against the enemy’s striking forces.
Some works on military history claim that the series of operations during the
Battle of Moscow should not include the October action of the Western, Reserve
and Bryansk Fronts; that the enemy had been finally halted at the Mozhaisk
defence line, and that after this the German Command had to work out a “new
general offensive operation”.
All that was said above about the failure of Operation Typhoon disproves
this claim. Alluding to the fact that in November the Germans had to
considerably reinforce their troops and materiel and somewhat regroup the
armoured units on their left flank proves nothing, since such measures are to be
expected in any large-scale offensive operation, and so cannot be considered
factors determining the beginning or the end of a strategic operation.
The important thing is that at the beginning of November, the concentrations
of the enemy striking forces on our Front’s flanks had been detected in good
time, which allowed us to correctly anticipate the directions of the enemy’s main
effort. The enemy punches encountered defences widely dispersed in depth and
sufficiently equipped with antitank and engineering resources. Our main armour
forces were also concentrated on the most threatened sectors.
Enemy communications spanned more than a thousand kilometres, and were
constantly harassed by guerilla detachments whose acts of heroism disrupted the
work of the enemy supply and logistical agencies.
Heavy German losses, the length of Operation Typhoon, and the stubborn
resistance of the Soviet troops had a great impact on the enemy’s fighting
efficiency, caused confusion in his ranks, and dissipated his belief in the success
of the offensive operation.
The Soviet forces also sustained heavy losses in the Battle of Moscow but
the country was providing them with the necessary support, and they maintained
their fighting efficiency right to the very end of the defensive actions, and were
always confident of victory. The most difficult time had passed.
The Red Army had foiled Hitler’s plan of seizing Leningrad and linking up
with Finland’s Armed Forces. Now on the counter-offensive, the Red Army
routed the enemy in the area of Tikhvin, and took the city. The forces of the
Southern Front also launched a counter-offensive, and captured Rostovon-Don.
This was the setting in which we prepared the counter-offensive at Moscow.
The idea for it was conceived back in November. The plan took final shape
during the defensive battles, and became an important and constant element of
all the operational planning of the Supreme Command Stavka.
The counter-offensive had been prepared all through the defence actions and
the methods for its realization definitely took shape when to all appearances the
Nazi troops could no longer sustain our counterblows. The Soviet troops, fired
with successes scored in the defence battles, launched the counter-offensive at
Moscow without a let-up.
On November 29, I called up the Supreme Commander and, having reported
the situation, asked him for orders so that we could begin our counterattack.
Stalin listened to me attentively, then asked:
“Are you sure that the enemy has reached a critical point and is in no
position to bring some new large force into action?”
“The enemy has been bled white. But if we don’t eliminate the dangerous
enemy penetrations now, the enemy can later reinforce his troops in the area of
Moscow with large reserves at the expense of his north and south groupings, and
then the situation may become adverse.”
Stalin said he would discuss this with the General Staff.
I asked Sokolovsky, Chief of Staff of the Front, who also thought it was time
to send our reserve armies into action, to call up the General Staff and back our
suggestion urging a counter-offensive without further delay.
Late at night on November 29, we were informed that the Supreme
Command had decided to launch the counter-offensive and wanted us to show it
our plan of the operation. In the morning of November 30, we submitted our
ideas, which were graphically put down on a map, for no details were required
since we had agreed all the basics in advance with Stalin, Shaposhnikov and
Vasilevsky. I merely attached a short note to Vasilevsky: “Please urgently let
People’s Commissar of Defence Comrade Stalin have the Western Front’s plan
of the counter-offensive and issue a directive that we may launch the operation,
for otherwise we might miss the bus.”
A note attached to the map showed that owing to the situation, the armies of
the Front could not simultaneously go on the counter-offensive. We set the
following schedule:
“1. Considering the detrainment and concentration of troops and their
rearming, the time the attack is to begin shall be between the morning of the 3rd
and the 4th of December for the 1st Shock, the 20th, the 16th and Golikov’s
armies, and between the 5th and 6th of December for the 30th Army.”
In the next clause of the note we explained that the armies we were
committing in the offensive were listed in the Stavka’s directive, and described
the objectives of the Western Front:
“The immediate objective is to strike at Klin and Solnechnogorsk and thrust
in the direction of the Istra, crushing the main enemy group on the right flank,
and to strike at Uzlovaya and Bogoroditsk, hitting the flank and rear of the
Guderian group, thus smashing the enemy on the left flank of the Western Front
armies.”
“To pin down enemy forces along the rest of the front and deny the enemy
any chance of rushing in troops, the Western Front’s 5th, 33rd, 43rd, 49th and
50th armies shall assume the offensive with limited objectives on the 4th-5th of
December.”
“The main air group (three quarters of all aircraft) shall cooperate with the
shock group on the right, while the rest shall cooperate with Lieutenant-General
Golikov’s army on the left.”
Stalin wrote “I agree” on the plan, and signed it.
The objectives set for the individual armies of the Western Front were:
The 1st Shock Army under the command of Lt.-Gen. Kuznetsov was to
deploy for attack in the area of Dmitrov and Yakhroma, and, in cooperation with
the 30th and 20th armies, strike towards Klin, and then advance in the general
direction of Teryaeva Sloboda.
The 20th Army in cooperation with the 1st Shock and the 16th armies was to
launch an attack from the Krasnaya Polyana and Bely Rast area in the general
direction of Solnechnogorsk, enveloping it from south, and then advance on
Volokolamsk. Besides, the right wing of the 16th Army was to thrust towards
Kryukovo, and then develop the attack depending on the situation.
The 10th Army in cooperation with the units of the 50th Army was to launch
an attack in the direction of Stalinogorsk-Bogoroditsk and further on to the south
of the River Upa.
Under the counter-offensive plan the initial task for the troops on the flanks
of the Western Front was to smash up the striking forces of Army Group Centre,
thus removing the immediate threat to Moscow. We would need more forces to
assign farther-going and more categorical missions. As it was, our purpose was
to throw the enemy as far away from Moscow as we could, causing him
maximum casualties.
