틴에이저에서 할머니까지... 스웨덴의 침공

1971년 비욘(Bjorn Ulvaeus)과 결혼한 아그네사(Agnetha Foltskog)의 첫 아이 출산 예정일은 하필 1973년 2월 23일 유로비전 송 콘테스트 출전 티켓을 따기 위한 스웨덴 본선 당일이었다. 팀 동료 베니(Benny Anderson)의 약혼녀 안니 프리드(Anni-Frid)가 부랴부랴 그녀의 노래 파트까지 연습해 만일을 대비해야 했다.

그러나 다행히 출산이 늦어져 무사히 아그네사는 무대에 올라 '링링(Ring ring)'을 부를 수 있었다. 이 네 사람의 그룹 아바()는 이날 3위에 그쳐 스웨덴 대표가 되지 못하는 고배를 마시지만 온전히 출산할 수 있었던 것은 그래도 일이 잘 풀려 나갈 것임을 암시하는 징조였다. 그 같은 길조는 당장 이듬해에 현실로 나타났다. 마침내 '워터루(Waterloo)'라는 노래로 1974년 유로비전 송 콘테스트에 출전, 32개국 5억 TV시청자가 지켜보는 가운데 20대 1의 경쟁을 뚫고 당당 그랑프리를 차지한 것이었다. '워터루'는 순식간에 영국 및 유럽에서 밀리언 셀링 싱글이 되었다.

이후 아바는 마치 천운을 타고난 그룹인 듯 쾌속 항진을 거듭했다. 영국 출신이 아니면 설령 유로비전 대회에서 우승했다 하더라도 곧 잊혀지고 마는 관례마저 운 좋게 비껴 가는 '위대한 예외'를 창조했다. 발표하는 싱글마다 차트 상위권으로 치솟아 영국 차트에서는 18주 연속 톱 10싱글을 기록했고 그중 9곡이 1위에 등극하는 눈부신 히트 퍼레이드를 펼쳤다. 이 '9곡의 넘버원' 기록은 역사상 비틀스, 엘비스 프레슬리, 클리프 리처드 셋만이 장식한 대 기록이었으며 이로써 아바는 '1970년대에 가장 레코드를 많이 판 그룹'이라는 타이틀을 안게 됐다.
1978년까지 4년간 아바의 레코드 판매량은 세계적으로 무려 5천3백만 장에 달했다. 1977년 연간 소득이 110억원을 기록, 스웨덴의 자랑인 볼보 자동차 회사의 총판매고 90억원을 제치고 1위 기업으로 부상할 정도였다.

그들의 인기는 영국을 비롯한 유럽을 넘어 지구촌을 덮었다. 터키, 이스라엘에서도 음반 판매량 1위였고, 호주 사람 4명 가운데 하나가 1976년 앨범인 <아바 히트곡집><Abba Greatest Hits>를 갖고 있었으며, 심지어 소련의 암시장에서도 그들의 LP가 130달러의 고가(당시 LP 한 장 가격은 8달러)로 거래되었다. 극동 지역에서도 그 인기는 막강해 우리나라의 경우만 하더라도 한 앨범에서 보통 4곡 이상이 방송과 다운타운가를 뒤덮었다. 1978년 <앨범(The Album)>의 미국 히트 싱글은 '게임의 이름(The name of the game)' '내게 승산을 걸어보라(Take a chance on me)' 두 곡이었지만 국내에서는 '독수리(Eagle)' '무브 온(Move on)' '음악을 감사해요(Thank you for the music)'도 덩달아 팝송 팬들의 사랑을 받았다.

아바는 그러나 결코 운으로 먹고 산 팀은 아니었다. 그들은 대중들의 환호를 독점할 만한 충분한 재능이 있었다. 아바의 모든 곡들은 출중한 작곡 실력을 보유한 남성 멤버 비욘과 베니가 당시 매니저이자 폴라(Polar)레코드사 사장인 스틱 앤더슨(Stig Anderson)과 함께 썼다. 그들의 음악이 이윤의 지상 명령에 따라 팝 시장을 요리하기 위해 혈안이 된 음악업자들에 의해 만들어진 것이 아니라 '자체 생산'이라는 점은 주목할 만 했다.

베니와 비욘이 제조해 낸 아바의 경쾌한 '버블 검(Bubble gum) 음악'은 당시로 볼 때 높은 기술적 완성도를 자랑했다. 신시사이저와 '스트링'의 풍요로운 사운드와 종소리 같은 여성 보컬은 유서 깊은 필 스펙터(Phil Spector)의 '사운드의 벽'(Wall Of Sound) 방식을 따른 두드러진 부분이었다. 명랑한 리듬의 사운드 구조에 더구나 쉬운 멜로디를 화학적으로 결합시킬 줄 아는 비범한 능력을 뽐냈다. 그리하여 누구나 듣기에도 좋고 춤추기에도 안성맞춤인 곡들을 뽑아내 1970년대 초중반에 세력을 떨친 헤비메탈과 프로그레시브 록의 시끄럽고 복잡한 분위기와는 전혀 다른 단순한 음악을 바라는 수요층이 폭넓게 존재하고 있음을 입증했다. 1978년 <뉴스 위크>지는 “아바의 부패되지 않은(antiseptic) '이지 리스닝' 사운드는 틴에이저에서부터 할머니까지 포괄하는 전 수요층에 어필하고 있다”고 언급했다.

물론 그들도 비판으로부터 완전 해방되지는 못했다. 팻 분(Pat Boone)의 '모래 위에 쓴 사랑의 편지(Love letters in the sand)'에 기초해 '아이 두, 아이 두, 아이 두, 아이 두(I do, I do, I do, I do)'를 만든 것에서 알 수 있듯 영미의 고전적인 팝 스타일에 편승, 기술 제휴함으로써 그들의 구미에 맞추고 있다는 비난이 뒤따랐다. 이와 함께 음악 외적인 요소가 본질을 압도한다는 문제도 제기돼 한 스웨덴 음악 평론가는 “마케팅, 스테이지 조명 그리고 사운드 기술자를 빼고 나면 그들도 단지 그저 그런 그룹”이라고 혹평하기도 했다. 록 음악 진영은 <롤링 스톤>지 아닌 <비즈니스 월드>지를 읽으며 여가를 보내는 상업성 지향의 그들에게 애초부터 무관심이었다.

그러나 많은 음악 관계자들은 그들이 스스로 곡을 써서, 세대와 계층을 포괄하는 작품을 만들어 냈고 또한 외로이 스칸디나비아 출신 뮤지션들의 미국 상륙(Scandinavian Invasion)을 주도했다는 점을 높이 샀다. 사실 비(非) 영미 출신이라는 핸디캡을 안고 영미 팝의 본고장을 정복했다는 점은 인상적이다. 이 때문인지 예외 없이 비판의 도마 위에 오른, 비슷한 계열의 버블검 그룹들 오스몬즈(Osmonds), 카펜터스(Carpenters)에 비하면 상대적으로 덜 시달렸다.

아바가 인기를 얻는 데는 여성 멤버인 안니 프리드와 아그네사의 리드미컬한 보컬이 크게 작용했다. 그들의 목소리는 매끄럽게 곡조를 타면서도 강렬했고, 또 듣기 좋은 하모니를 일궈냈다. 이와 함께 북유럽형의 늘씬한 신체와 미모도 빼놓을 수 없는 인기 창출의 밑거름이었다. 국내에도 개봉된 78년 다큐멘터리 영화 <아바(Abba-The movie)>의 재미는 순전 두 여인의 '환상적인 엉덩이'로 초점이 맞춰질 지경이었다.

'오디오+비디오'의 AV시스템을 일찍이 구현한 아바의 네 구성원은 하나로 뭉치기 전부터 본국 스웨덴에서는 알아주는 스타들이기도 했다. 기타를 친 비욘(1945년생)은 포크밴드 웨스트 베이 싱어스(West Bay Singers)를 거쳐 후테내니 싱어스(Hootenanny Singers)의 멤버였고, 같은 1945년생인 베니는 '스웨덴의 비틀스'로 불린 그룹 헵 스타스(Hep Stars)의 베이스 주자로 활약했다. 1966년 우연히 어느 파티장에서 만난 두 사람은 이후 간헐적으로 함께 일하기 시작했고 1969년 각각 아그네사와 안니 프리드를 만나게 되면서 공동 전선을 펴기에 이른다.

유일하게 노르웨이에서 태어나 2살 때 스웨덴으로 이주해 온 안니 프리드(1945년생)는 13살 때 이미 댄스 그룹의 리드 싱어로 나서 장래의 남편인 베니를 만나기 전까지 일본, 베네수엘라 등 국제 무대에 출전, 명성을 쌓았다. 탁월한 각선미의 아그네사(1950년생)는 스웨덴판 록 오페라 <지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타>에서 마리아 막달레나 역을 맡아 '주님을 어떻게 사랑해야 할지 모르겠어요(I don't know how to love him)'을 불러 주목받은 인기 가수였다.

눈에 띄는 불협화음없이 순탄하게 1970년대 중반을 질주하는 데 성공했지만 역시 그들도 베이비 붐 세대의 자유분방한 가치와 결별한 별종의 연예 스타는 못 되었다. 남다른 부부애를 과시했던 비욘과 아그네사가 1978년 12월 이혼 수속을 밟기 시작했다. 이는 아이러니컬하게도 오랜 동거 끝에 배니와 안니 프리드가 1978년 10월 웨딩마치를 올린 지 3개월이 채 지나지 않아 터진 일이었다. 여기에 영향을 받았을까, 베니 부부마저 2년 반만인 1981년 2월 갈라서고 말았다.

전성기에 아바는 미국에서 4장의 톱 10싱글과 5장의 톱 40앨범을 기록했다. 물론 두드러진 성적이었지만 그럼에도 불구하고 아바의 멤버들은 미국을 유일한 '실패 지역'으로 간주했다. 그들은 유럽만큼 미국을 제압하지 못한 것이 늘 불만이었다.

하지만 그들은 '미국 팝 시장 진출의 교두보 확보'라는 매우 의미있는 역사적 발자취를 남겼다. 그들로 인해 훗날 많은 북유럽 출신 가수들이 미국 상륙에 자신감을 얻게 되었다. 노르웨이 그룹 아하(A-ha)가 '아바 이후 최대의 스칸디나비아 사절단'으로서 미국 정복에 성공했고, 스웨덴의 록시트(Roxette), 에이스 오브 베이스(Ace Of Base)가 아바의 후광을 업고 1990년대 미 팝계를 석권, 스웨덴 열풍을 일으켰다. 특히 혼성 4인조라는 라인업까지 계승(?)한 에이스 오브 베이스는 '아바 신화의 재현'을 캐치프레이즈로 내걸고 그들을 능가할 만큼의 기세를 떨쳤다.
이제 아바의 이름은 역사의 뒤켠으로 물러섰지만 이러한 후배들의 잇단 등장은 여전히 아바가 '채권자'로 살아 꿈틀대고 있음을 확인시켜 주고 있다. 비단 스칸디나비아 국가 가수들 뿐 아니라 영미 댄스 음악 지향의 가수들도 그들에게 많은 빚을 졌다. 아바의 영향을 공개적으로 시인하는 마돈나, 팻 숍 보이즈(Pet Shop Boys) 등 영국과 미국 댄스 가수들이 곧 아바에게 바치는 앨범을 내놓을 예정이라고 한다. 이같은 사실 또한 아바가 팝 역사에 길이 남을 전설적 그룹임을 암시하는 뚜렷한 사례일 것이다. |
