(3-3) The man operating the machine was not injured. <기계를 작동시키고 있었던> <cf> 문장이 분사나 분사(구)의 형태로 시작하는 경우, 분사나 분사(구) 끝에 콤마(Comma)를 찍어야 한다. <When a sentence begins with a participle, or a participle phrase a comma should be placed at its end. For instance,> Smiling, she hugged the baby. <cf> 분사나 분사구가 문장의 중간에 있는 경우, 그 정보가 의미에 필수적이지 않으면 콤마를 사용해 분리해야 한다. 그러나 중요한 정보를 담고 있다면 콤마를 찍어 분리하지 마라. <Remember that if the participle or the participle phrase occurs in the middle of a sentence, it should be separated by using commas, only if the information is not essential to the meaning. He dived into the swimming pool. <수영을 하기 위해 사용되는 웅덩이 = 수영장> ⇨ 동명사(Gerund) He waved to the swimming children. <수영하고 있는 아이들> ⇨ 현재분사(Present Participle) 2) 구별 제 2원칙 : 현재분사+명사는 “명사가 ~하고 있다”라고 해석해도 의미가 통하는 반면 동명사+명사는 전혀 의미가 통하지 않는다. He dived into the swimming pool. <“웅덩이가 수영하고 있다” 의미가 통하지 않음> He waved to the swimming children. <“아이들이 수영하고 있다” 의미가 통함> brave soldier ⇨ 용감한 군인 / 군인은 용감하다 3) 구별 제 3원칙 : 보통 현재분사+명사(생물)인 반면 동명사+명사(무생물)의 특성을 가진다. 이 원칙은 100% 적용되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들면, smoking chimney(무생물) <연기가 나는 굴뚝(무생물)>임에도 불구하고 smoking은 현재분사(Present Participle) 역할을 한다.
