나는 드라마를 거의 보지 않는다. 아니다. 더러 본다. 아내가 보는 시간에 함께 앉아서 보면서 온갖 질문을 하다가 "나 좀 봅시다. 나중에 말해줄게. 지금은 가만히 좀 있어요." 하면 나는 뒷전이 된다. 아내는 드라마를 몇 번 보면 그 결말을 족집게처럼 집어낸다. 아내가 각본을 써도 될 정도다. 나는 그 수준에는 어림도 없다.
아내의 취향과 다른 나는 근래 CSI에 빠졌다가 위기의 주부들을 다 보고 나니 인생이 갑자기 삭막해졌다.
드라마 증후군에 빠진 것이다. 아낙네들이 드라마에 빠졌다고 흉을 보던 내가 그 모양 그 꼴이 되고 말았다. 집에서 하나 TV를 돌릴 때 마다 마치 노숙자 같은 표정과 한 쪽 다리가 불편한 오십대가 의사인 듯 한 젊은이들을 데리고 걷는 모습을 자주 만났다.
CSI를 보던 무렵이라서 무슨 의학 관계 범죄 드라마인 줄 알았다. 그러다가 드디어 CSI 시리즈를 다 보고서는 오갈 데 없는 심정으로 하우스를 보기 시작했다. 열흘 동안에 4시즌까지 다 보고는 다시 허탈하다.
그 열흘 동안 의사 하우스의 사랑과 우정과 천재성과 아집에 나는 진이 빠지고 허탈하고 짜증나고 경탄하고 그리고 다 끝나니 시원하고 섭섭하다.
하우스가 팀원인 아래 의사들에게 철학적인 듯 또는 놀리는 듯 한 말투에 매력을 느끼면서 그 말에 상처를 입는 팀원들의 마음을 이해를 했다. 하우스를 미워하면서 존경할 수 없는 하우스의 천재성은 우리가 현실에서 찾고자 하는 명의이다. 미운 존재이면서 미워할 수 없는 고민을 가진 정다운 우리 이웃들의 모습이 하우스의 모습과 포개지곤 했다.
주인공 하우스는 진단의학 전문의사이나 드라마의 각 편마다 별 못된 병들이 줄 서서 나온다. 그 병을 고치는 의사가운을 입지 않아서 환자들에게 일반인으로 오해받는 과정을 거치면서 나는 보다가 졸면 다시 앞을 찾아보는 감동의 매력은 하우스의 매력이고 병원의 분위기의 매력이다.
때로는 억지 같은 면이 있기는 하다.
예로서 하우스 3시즌 1에피소드에서 하우스박사가 직감으로 병을 알아낸다. 그 병은 코디솔이란 주사를 놓으면 그 걷지 못하는 환자를 걷게 할 수 있다고 말한다. 허나 커디원장은 정확하게 증명할 수 없다면 그 주사를 놓아줄 수 없다고 완강하게 거절한다. 오진으로 인하여 잘못되는 경우는 병원에서는 환자에게 소송을 당하게 되고 그 비용은 막대하기 때문이다.
걷지 못하는 상태로 퇴원을 하는 환자를 보면서 커디가 마음속으로 하우스박사의 말을 믿어한 대로 하우스박사 몰래 코디솔을 환자에게 놓았더니. 기적처럼 환자가 제 발로 걸어서 퇴원을 한다. 여기서 보이는 커디의 눈물을 한국의 드라마적이면서 그 눈물은 묘한 감동이다. 그러나 하우스 박사의 동료이며 벗이 닥터 윌슨은 이 사실을 절대 하우스에게 말하면 계속 부당한 진료를 하우스가 하게 되니 비밀을 지키라고 커디에게 강하게 말린다. 그 타당성을 커디는 이해하고 이 사실을 닥터 하우스에게 숨긴다. 아래 대화는 이 사실을 알게 된 하우스가 닥터 윌슨 방에 찾아가서 오고가는 내용이다.
하우스 : 원장이 뭔짓을 했는지 알아? 윌슨 : 이번엔 뭐죠? 하우스 : 나한테 거짓말을 했다니까 내 진단으로 내 환자를 치료해놓고 거짓말을 했어 윌슨 : 원장답지 않네요 하우스 : 맞아. 자네가 할 만한 짓 같긴 하지만 윌슨 : 원장이 뭐라고 하던가요? 하우스 : 지금 자네 몸짓이 말하는 대로. 계획이 뭐야? 내가 한 번 망친 걸로 잔뜩 겸손해져서 인생을 다시 한 번 돌아보고 진실과 선함의 본성을 묻고 카메론(하우스팀원 중 너무 인간적이고, 자기희생적인 캐릭터)이 되버리는거? 윌슨 : 뭐 비슷한 거요. 우리가 사실대로 말해서 그러니까 의학적 증거가 전혀 없이 해결을 했다고 하면 자기가 신이라고 생각할까봐서요. 날개가 녹아버릴까 걱정한 거예요.
이런 식으로 하우스에게는 병원 내부에서 위아래가 없다. 성격은 변덕스럽고 수염도 보름에 한 번 깎을까 말까 의사가운도 입지 않고 멋대로 패션에 밉지 않은 독설의 제왕 하우스에게 늘 자신들의 의견을 묵살당하다가 문득 받아들여지는 순간에 기뻐하며 꿋꿋하게 버티는 3명의 팀원, 하우스의 영원한 친구이자 밥인 닥터윌슨, 조금 야한 옷을 입었다고 하우스의 온갖 놀림을 당하고도 당당하게 자신의 길을 가는 커디 원장을 배역으로 적당한 긴장감으로 원인을 알 수 없는 질병을 치료해가는 과정을 반복해서 보여준다.
따분하고 지루한 내용의 질병 치료과정을 맛깔스럽게 하는 것은 바로 하우스의 괴짜 캐릭터다. 의사의 상징인 흰 가운은 아예 입지 않고 의사로서의 자존감은 눈곱만큼도 없으면서 환자는 인간이 아니라 거의 자신의 호기심의 대상으로 여겨질 뿐이다. 그러나 그 아래를 들여다보면 누구보다도 상처받고 사랑받기를 원하면서 사람의 목숨을 무엇보다 소중히 여기는 진정한 휴머니스트다.

《하우스(영어: House)》는 《로 앤 오더》를 기획한 바 있는 데이비드 쇼어가 기획하고, 데이비드 쇼어와 브라이언 싱어가 제작 총지휘자(executive producer)를 맡은 FOX의 의학 드라마이다. 2004년 미국의 폭스에서 본방송이 시작되었으며, 현재 미국에서 2007년 9월 25일부터 시즌 4가 방영되고 있다. 가상의 병원인 프린스턴 플레인스보로 대학 부속 병원 진단의학과의 이야기를 다루고 있다.
이 작품은 "전통적 아니다 주인공 염세적인 검시관" "의료 버전 살록홈즈에 적합한 사례"로 가장 이단적인 새로운 의료 드라마로 되어 2006 년 삐보디 상을 수상.

그레고리 하우스(Dr. Gregory House, 배우 휴 로리) - 주인공으로 진단의학과장을 맡고 있으며 신장, 감염병의 전문가이다. 1959 년 6 월 11 일, 영국, 옥스퍼드에서 출생했다. 공립 케임 브리지 대학 이튼 학교에서 배웠다. 아버지는 올림픽 금메달리스트. 1977 년에는 배 영국청소년팀, 1980 년에는 케임브리지 대학 팀의 일원이 된다. 1978년, 케임브리지에서 Emma Thompson과 만난다. 두 사람은 함께 "훗토라이쯔 (Footlights)"에 참여하고 있었다. 그리고 1980 년 그녀에게서 Stephen 플라이를 소개받는다. 시즌 4에서부터 앨리슨 캐머런과 로버트 체이스는 아리조나 주에 있는 병원에서 일하게 되는 이유로 다섯 명의 새로운 등장인물이 추가될 것이다. 동시에 기존 등장인물들도 시즌 4에 출연할 것이다.
4시즌의 새로운 의사들
3시즌 파이널에서 포어맨, 캐머론, 체이스가 각각 사퇴, 해고되어 팀이 없어진 하우스는 커디와 윌슨의 설득으로 팀원을 새로 뽑기로 한다. 하우스는 각각 가슴에 번호를 달게 하고 서바이벌식으로 경쟁을 시킨다.
13 (Thirteen, 배우 Olivia Wilde) - 내과, 어릴때 엄마가 헌팅턴 무도병으로 죽었고 자신도 그 병의 50% 유전확률을 가지고 있다 (ep s04e08)후에 헌팅턴 무도병 검사에서 양성으로 나온다
커트너 (Lawrence Kutner, 배우 Kal Penn) - 6 or 9, 재활 스포츠 의학 타웁 (Chris Taub, 배우 Peter Jacobson) - 39, 성형외과, 전 직장에서 간호사와 바람을 피운 사실이 알려졌고 자신의 부인에게 간통사실을 말하지 않는 대신 성형학분야에 종사하지 않기로 그의 동업자와 거래를 했다. 제프리 콜 (Jeffre Cole, 배우 Edi Gathegi) - 유전학 전공, 몰몬교이며 싱글대디, 몰몬교도는 일부다처제를 용인하는 것으로 알려져 있어 하우스는 이를 비꼬아 빅러브(Big Love - HBO의 일부다처제를 다룬 드라마)라고 부른다. 앰버 볼라스키 (Amber Volakis, 배우 Anne Dudek) - 24, 영상의학, 이기기 위해 수단방법을 가리지 않는 성격, 하우스는 Cutthroat bitch라고 부른다. 경쟁에서 마지막으로 떨어진 후보 그렇지만 후에 윌슨의 여자 친구로 다시 등장한다. 결국 시즌 4 마지막 회에서 윌슨박사의 품안에서 죽고 만다. 헨리 돕슨 (Henry Dobson, 배우 Carmen Argenziano) - 26, 나이 많은 할아버지이지만 의사면허가 없다. 30년 동안 콜롬비아 의대 입학 처에서 일을 했고 수업들을 청강하며 공부를 했다. 결국 하우스 팀에서 해고당하게 된다. 서바이벌 경쟁에서 마지막 살아남은 세 명의 의사는 13, 커트너, 타웁이다.
캐스팅 《하우스》의 프로듀서들은 그레고리 하우스의 역할을 위한 초기 오디션의 결과에 실망했다고 한다. 2004년 오디션을 할 당시 휴 로리는 영화를 찍고 있어서 그의 외모에 대해 사과했다. 로리의 국적을 모르고 그의 흠 없는 미국식 영어 어투에 속아 그의 오디션 테이프를 보고 연출가 브라이언 싱어가 "진정한 미국의 배우의 모범"이라고 찬사했다고 한다.
로리는 대본이 제임스 윌슨의 외모를 "보이쉬"하다고 가리켜, 제임스 윌슨이 주연이고 하우스를 조연으로 오해했다고 한다. 그 당시 쇼는 House라고 지어지지 않았다. 첫 회 파일럿의 전부 대본을 받을 때까지 하우스가 주연인줄 몰랐다고 했다. 로리의 아버지는 의사라서 "[로리] 아버지의 가짜 버전"의 연기로 돈을 받는데 대해서 미안하다고 했다.
주제가 주제가는 매시브 어택의 〈Teardrop〉이다. 원곡은 가사는 있지만 전주 일부분만 주제가로 쓰인다. 허나 저작권 문제로 여러 나라에서는 다른 주제가가 쓰인다.
촬영 《하우스》에서 여러 번 나오는 프린스턴-플레인즈보로 병원의 외부는 프린스턴 대학의 프리스트 캠퍼스 센터이다. 병원 내부의 촬영은 로스앤젤레스의 센츄리 시티에서 한다.
기타 정보 이 드라마의 제작자인 데이비드 쇼어는 버튼 루셰의 소설 《의학 탐정》에서 영감을 받았다고 한다. 실제로 드라마 상에서도 책에 소개된 많은 병이 소재로 사용되었다.
내용 전개 그레고리 하우스 의사는 뉴저지 프린스톤 병원으로 분석 의료 부문을 이끄는 파격적인 천재 의사이다. 대부분의 에피소드는 병원 밖 어디서든 환자의 질병이 발병하는 장면으로 시작된다. 그리고 그 환자의 질병의 원인을 규명 있도록 시행 착오하는 하우스와 그의 팀이이 드라마의 주체이다.
팀은 하우스의 유도에 따라서 소크라테스 식 문답 방식을 사용하여 진단을 하는데, 가끔 부하의 정보와 의견을 조정하며 차이는 정리한다. 각각의 에피소드에서 환자는 주로 2 번 3 번 잘못된 진단을 하여 건강 상태를 악화시키고 나서 치료하거나 또는 사망을 하는 수도 있다.
질병의 원인을 쉽게 도출하지 않는 이유는 환자가 건강 상태와 사정에 대해서 세운다 환자의 거짓말로 오진을 하는 수가 많다. 어떤 에피소드에서는 병원균을 찾기 위해 소유자의 허용 여부에 관계없이 환자의 집에 침입하는 모습이 그려져있다. 원래 제작자 데비드 쇼어는 House를 "박테리아가 피의자"CSI와 같은 드라마에 대한 생각이 있었다고도 말한다.
시즌별 에피소드와 대략 내용은 아래와 같다. 미국의 FOX에서 따왔다. 미국에서는 일주일에 한 편씩 방송이 되었다. 촬영은 그 일주일 동안에 촬영하고 편집하고 한 편의 드라마를 만드는 일은 마치 우리나라 드라마를 찍듯이 미국도 그런 모양이다. 드라마를 찍다 보면 여기 나오는 배우들도 거의 의사가 되어버릴 지경이겠다.
