[HERALD INTERVIEW]A conceptual artist makes sculpture out of stems, flowers
Flowers can be interpreted in many ways, indeed, but stems are rarely given similar attention. But to conceptual artist Bill Beckley, it really has to do with the stems, the linear lines that seem to signify the paths in our lives, or sometimes suggest a curve of a reclining woman.
Images of stems, some with flowers intact and some without, are blown up. Taking a closer look, you would find that these are not paintings, but photographs showing every single fiber and lines of these small objects painstakingly arranged by this artist with piercing bluish-grey eyes.
He personally thinks the process is somewhat similar to creating a sculptural work out of these stems. Even when "the whole flower is there, there`s no any vase or any kind of pictorial thing because I feel that they`re kind of like ideograms, a kind of letters or language." And when you have several of them together, it`s almost like having an iconic kind of sentence, says Beckley who teaches semiotics at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
"They are technically photographs, very straightforward photographs, but they are more in the context of paintings," said the artist who is on his first visit to Korea to attend his second exhibition in Seoul.
He started working with cibachrome photographs in the early 1970s and has been doing what could be called a conceptual art, and had most notably pioneered the genre of "photo-text," which employs photographic images in relation to narrative texts.
"Almost always, I work with something smaller and then on a larger scale, there`s something about the transformation, from being a small object to a bigger object. But also, I always try to make the photographs in the context of American paintings instead of fine art photography," said Beckley.
He was influenced by painters such as Barnett Newman, Robert Ryman and most importantly, Frank Stella, and started painting in the `60s but soon felt as if painting had come to almost an end.
"It was a time that photography really came into being considered art, I think, because of what happened to painting, which as modern art, became flatter and flatter till there was no space," he noted.
In 1969, a defining moment came - his version of crossing the Delaware River (as Washington did during Revolutionary War) - as he started painting a line (apparently a repeated theme for him regardless of medium) along the waters of Delaware River, taking pictures of the paint dissolving as he worked along.
So began his work with photographs and narratives, but Beckley chose to use photography as a tool of telling a story. "There were other artists, like Michael Heizer and Dennis Oppenheim who were using photograph and text but they were documenting record of what they had done. But I wanted to make my work a fiction because any kind of word or image can be true but it doesn`t have to be," said the artist.
After years of exclusively taking photographs of stems and flowers, Beckley moved on to a fresh subject - bubbles. It might seem to be a random choice, but his eyes found sculptural aspects to them as he did in his prior subjects.
"Bubbles are very relaxed and carefree and in some sense kind of abstract. But taken very closely, (the floating bubbles) have colors and lines, and also the little lines that separate," explained Beckley, adding that "it`s important that they have textures just like these photographs of stems, but at the same time extremely realistic." The "Bill Beckley" exhibition runs through Oct. 31 at the Park Ryu Sook Gallery in Cheongdam-dong. For details, call (02) 549-7574 or visit www.parkryusookgallery.co.kr
