<총평>
** 어휘/숙어/생활영어- 허 민(보카바이블/이디엄바이블/스텝업 잉글리쉬 저자)

---------------------------------------
During World War Ⅱ, the U.S. Marines had a difficult problem. They had to find a way to keep their communication secrets. Japan kept breaking U.S. codes. They knew their enemy's plan, so they had time to prepare.
The Americans became desperate as the Japanese broke code after code. Then Philip Johnson went to the Marines. He had an idea. Johnson had grown up on a Nabajo reservation. He knew the Navajo language, and he knew it was very hard to learn. Fewer than 30 non-Navajos knew it. None of them were
Japanese. Johnson though Navajo could work well as a code. Hoever, the Marine officer was not sure about Johnson's idea. Even so, he agreed to give it a try. The Marines had to try something.
Johnson set up a test. He showed what could be done in 20 seconds. The Navajos could encode, transmit, and decode a three-line message. The officier was impressed. He brought in two code breakers. They didn't even know how to write down what they were hearing. Trying to traslate it was impossible. The Navajo 'code talers" had a job. The officer ordered 200 Navajos to be trained for code-talking duty.
① Philip Johnson's idea proved to be effective.
② A few Japanese could write and speak Navajo.
③ In the end, the U.S. Marines didn't trust the Navajo code talkers.
④ The U.S. Marines knew when the Japanese would attack.
⑤ The U.S. code breakers understood the message in Navajo.
