Presidential aspirants gear up for elections
차기 대권주자들 대권 행보 본격화
Presidential hopefuls are shifting into high gear for next year`s presidential race as the current parliamentary general session draws to a close.
Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak, the two major contenders from the main opposition Grand National Party, stepped up their competition against each other with highly publicized events.
Former Prime Minister Goh Kun, a popular presidential hopeful, also said he would form a new party on Thursday.
The ruling Uri Party is therefore expected to speed up moves to realign with Goh and other political forces such as the Democratic Party in order to regain lost ground against the GNP.
The National Assembly`s regular session is slated to end Dec. 9.
Park Geun-hye, a former GNP chairwoman, on Thursday gave a lecture on North Korea to a group of GNP lawmakers. She had kept a low profile after quitting her party leadership post in June.
Park has pledged to dedicate herself to resolving the North Korean nuclear issue in the wake of its atomic test on Oct. 9. "I will do everything which would be of any help to resolve the problem, despite any difficulty and regardless of a political gain or loss." Analysts interpreted her remarks as leaving open the possibility of visiting the communist nation amid international tension over its nuclear weapons program.
Park is considering a visit to China later this month to discuss North Korea and other issues with Chinese officials. She also plans to deliver a lecture on Monday at Dankuk University and meet with reporters the following day.
Former Seoul Mayor and businessman Lee Myung-bak visited Gwangju, South Jeolla Province on Thursday and announced specific plans for a pan-national canal project.
Two major canals to be built in South Korea will converge into one waterway, connecting with another one to be built in North Korea, according to Lee.
When he served as Seoul mayor last year, Lee completed challenging projects such as the restoration of Cheonggyechon, a manmade river running through the heart of Seoul.
Lee is to visit Japan between Nov. 8 and 10 to complete a plan to build an international scientific city. He said the city, which combines national science with business, touts corporations in the United States and other countries and some 40,000 to 50,000 experts in science and technology.
The scientific city project would be one of the two biggest pillars of Korea`s future growth along with his plan to build a waterway connecting South and North Korea, he said.
Lee and Park of the GNP have been vying for the party`s ticket for the next presidential election, slated for December 2007. Lee is ahead of Park in the latest polls.
Former Prime Minister Goh Kun, who has no party affiliation, joins Park and Lee in the top tier of a list of potential presidential candidates.
Goh added a twist to the race by announcing his plan on Thursday to launch a new centralist political party to promote his candidacy.
Goh said the parties will comprise politicians from both the ruling and minor opposition parties.
"For the time being, I will unofficially meet figures in political circles, but when the timing is appropriate, we can think of a dialogue channel such as a round-table meeting on a national unity party." he said.
The GNP`s another presidential hopeful, Sohn Hak-gyu, is also set to bolster his bid for presidency through lectures and forums which would start next week.
