The telephone rings when you're having dinner with your family.
It may be "Rachel from Cardholder Services" saying that you can lower your credit card rates in return for an upfront payment. This is called a robocall, a call that uses a computerized auto-dialer to deliver a pre-recorded message. Robocalls are on the rise.
People in the U.S. have placed over 217 million numbers on the Do Not Call (DNC) list to avoid telemarketing calls.
The barrage of calls affects the quality of people's lives. Robocalls often interrupt our work, block important phone calls, and even disturb a good night's sleep. What is worse, these calls are the medium by which scammers sneak in to try to steal our money, our credit card numbers and our personal information. Telemarketing fraud costs consumers an estimated $1 million every day. However, robocalls are also used for good purposes such as public service and emergency announcements.
