1. PACKING
1.1 SCOPE
This specification covers the minimum requirements for protection of the importing cargos against damage during transportation and storage. The extent of protection for the cargo shall not be limited by the requirements of this specification.
1.2 GENERAL REQUIREMENT
In due consideration of the following, Supplier shall provide special seaworthy
packing for the cargo in most proper and reasonable manner so as to avoid loss,
damage and/or deterioration during transportation to the Project Site.
1) Climatic conditions : Heavy monsoon area
2) Handling facilities at ports of loading and discharging
3) Method of transport
4) Type and characteristics of the cargoes
5) Protection of the cargo against damage
6) Dampproof, waterproof, sandproof and dustproof
7) Protection against pilferage and missing
8) Storage period at plant site : up to 18 months, unless otherwise specified.
When portions of this specification are not applicable, the best commercial export packing methods shall be used after getting purchaser’s approval. In all cases, equipment and materials shall be prepared for shipment to withstand multiple handling, storage, exposure to rain and salt spray, outside storage and to ensure safe arrival at destination. Shipping containers shall be constructed and sealed in a manner that will provide maximum protection from pilferage.
1.3 METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS AT SITE
1) Wind : Max. Wind speed = 56m/s at 10m above ground.
2) Humidity : Relative Humidity = 90%
3) Temperature : Max. / Min. : 40℃ / 8℃ (for electrical design : 55℃)
4) Rainfall : Max. Annual = 5,900mm
Max. Monthly = 1,370mm
Max. Daily = 406mm
In view of the above mentioned conditions, the cargo shall be adequately packed
and protected from corrosion and damage to insure safe arrival at destination.
1.4 MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM WEIGHT AND SIZE OF PACKAGE
1) Minimum weight and volume
Except for dangerous/hazardous items wherever possible, each consignment
should be made into packages not less than 100kgs in weight or not less than
0.7 cubic meters in volume so that theft and loss during transportation may be
eliminated.
2) Weight and Length of Standard package
For easy handling and standardization of the Cargo, each package shall,
wherever possible, be within the following dimensions:
(1) Weight : 3 tons
(2) Length : 9m or less
(3) Width : 2.3m or less
(4) Height : 2.5m or less
3) Maximum Weight and/or dimensions limitations
The desirable maximum weight and dimensions of each package shall be
limited as follows due to transport conditions at the country of destination.
(1) Weight : Up to 20 tons
(2) Length : Up to 10 Meters
(3) Width : Up to 3 Meters
(4) Height : Up to 3 Meters
If the package exceeds any one of the above figures, the supplier shall inform the contract for clarification at the time of submitting outside dimensions sketch 60 (sixty) days before the shipment.
1.5 PACKING CONDITIONS
1) General
General weighting more than 100kgs shall be mounted on skid platform or
pallet base to facilitate sling or forklift handling. Skid platform shall be also
considered for protection of the cargo against heavy rain during temporary
outside storage.
Outer package shall be sized to contain all parts or the equipment : protrusion
of valve stems etc. beyond the top or sides of outer package is not permitted.
The cargo shall be secured to the base or braced and blocked or separated
within the package. The package shall be always clearly indicated with the
gravity center.
Special care shall be taken to protect finished painted items such as control
panels, motor control centers and electrical controls from damage by external
impact or vibration during transport.
It is necessary that all shipping containers be tightly packed. Where voids
appear, they shall be filled with cushioning material or blocked off to prevent
any movement of contents.
Provision of special blocking, shims and dummy bearing shall be considered for
rotating parts of large pumps, motors, compressors, and other similar
equipment.
The cargo shall be adequately protected from rust or corrosion due to ingress
of dust, sand and water during transport and site storage.
All materials subject to water or moisture damage shall be packed in containers
having a laminated paper waterproof case liner with all liner joints and folds
sealed with a waterproof adhesive.
Small items shall be packed into waterproof carton. However, in case of
packing into non waterproof cartons, the cartons shall be enclosed and sealed
with plastic film or polyethylene sheet to prevent moisture deterioration of the
cartons which result in damage to the contents.
Precision instruments, office machines, and other calibrated mechanical
equipment shall be enclosed within waterproof heat-sealed barrier bags or
shrouds together with a suitable quantity of desiccant in order to maintain a low
relative humidity within the package. This shall be accomplished prior to
packing the material in the shipping container.
All fragile items shall be cushioned within the container to prevent damage
from shock, vibration and rough handling. Finished and painted surfaces shall
be protected.
Where practicable metal parts shall be protected from corrosion with
permanent paint film selected and applied according to the protective coatings
specification.
1) Piping, Fittings and Valves
Straight-run and fabricated piping in bundle or crate shall be limited preferably
to 4 tones.
Shop-primed galvanized or other coated straight-run pipe shall be bundled
with wooden strip to keep about 6mm clearance between pipes to prevent
abrasion of the pipe coating. The bundle shall be fastened with coated wire at
a section near each end of the bundle at 5m maximum intervals. Bundles of
pipe must contain uniform lengths.
Open ends of threaded or plain pipes shall be protected with metal or plastic
caps or plugs to prevent damage in handling, shipping and storage and shall
be coated with anti-rust protection.
Flanged faces, screwed, socket weld ends and other machined surfaces shall
plugged, sealed and protected with a suitable anti-corrosive material to
prevent damage and/or corrosion taking place prior to item being put into
operation.
Any openings on valves will be closed. Flanged openings with bolt holes will have a metal cover bolted to the flange. Other openings will be closed with covers, caps or discs securely fastened in such a way to avoid loss of the protection enroute.
2) Instruments and Electrical Equipment
Instruments and electrical parts shall be packed in such a manner that they will
be protected from both damage and corrosion during shipment, transport and
storage.
Electrical components of machinery which would deteriorate due to moisture
from the atmosphere and/or internal condensation shall be duly protected.
Contract preservatives and impregnated papers shall not be used on any electrical equipment. Waterproof paper and plastic film cover shall be used to seal openings on electrical equipment to prevent moisture from entering.
Instruments and motors shall be enclosed in waterproof, heat sealed barrier bags containing a suitable quantity of desiccant agent sufficient for minimum 18 storage months in order to maintain a low relative humidity within a package.
Packing of transformer, switchgear, starters control equipment, cabling and other electrical materials are covered by the individual equipment specification.
3) Pumps, Compressors and Other Machinery
Machined and bright surfaces of flange facings, piston rod, ball bearings, shafts, etc., shall be adequately coated with a suitable anti-corrosive material.
Pump and machine casings shall be cleaned of debris and the interior shall be coated or flushed with a suitable anti-corrosive material.
Heavy weighted parts such as rotors of compressors and turbines shall be appropriately supported to protect deflection or damages and packed with the suitable rust preventative against corrosion. Special cares and instructions shall be given by Maker with responsibility.
Flanged openings shall be sealed against the ingress of dust, dirt, sand and water by securing wooden or metal covers to the openings. Threaded connections will be protected by caps and small threaded connections can be wrapped.
Motors or parts thereof shall be carefully packed to prevent damage and corrosion due to climatic conditions.
4) Structural Steel
Structural steel, platforms, stairways, wire ropes (not used as reinforcement), etc., if not included elsewhere in this specification, shall be coated with a suitable anti-corrosive material. At least one (1) prime coating of 50μ shall be provided.
Nuts, bolts and rivets shall be cleaned and greased with a suitable lubricant prior to shipment.
The bundling and nesting of similar shapes and materials shall be used to reduce the volume factor as much as is practicable without risk of damage to the material.
5) Miscellaneous Equipment
Cements, firebricks, insulations and similar materials which will deteriorate in the presence of water shall be packed in waterproof containers and protected against damage during transportation and storage.
Firebricks and special tile shall be packed in shrink package. Motor and liquid coating compound shall be shipped in drums or pails.
1.6 STANDARD OF PACKING
In accordance with the shapes, characteristics and other factors of the cargo, the packing style such as case, crate, skid, bundle, steel drum, partial protected, bare, etc., are selected for the prevention of damage or other harmful effects during transportation and storage.
1.7 STANDARD PACKING STYLE
It is the Supplier’s responsibility to select an appropriate packing style in due consideration of the cargo’s characteristics.
1) CASE (See Fig. 1)
This packing form shall be applied for the packing which require complete sealing i.e. it shall be applied to packing which require the treatment for water-proof, moisture proof, rust-prevention, sunshine proof and also prevention of damage due to vibration, pressure, weight, and shock.
Furthermore, accessories and small parts shall be packed in this packing form.
(a) Regarding the rotating and sliding portions, Complete moisture proof,
rust prevention, and water proof shall be executed.
Rotating machine, in general, shall be packed in one case.
(b) Electrical equipment shall be referred to article 1-5.
Packing of electrical Equipment.
(c) All valves, cocks, pipes, etc. shall be, in general, carefully cleaned and
covered tightly with blind caps at both end openings before delivery.
2) CRATE PACKING (See Fig. 2)
(a) Crate packing shall be applied to equipment and parts resistant to rain,
dust and sunshine, vibration, pressure and shock.
(b) This type of packing shall be applied to equipment which needs external
checking during transportation.
(c) Small parts detachable such as valves, cocks, special pipes, gauges,
Instruments, and accessories shall be removed in advance and separately
packed in the hermetic case of Fig. 1.
(d) If oil is filled in the equipment, drain cock shall be ruggedly protected not
to pilfer the oil inside.
3) SKID PACKING (See Fig. 3)
(a) Skid packing shall be applied to the products strong enough to endure
damages due to contact or shock, which are directly liftable but need
stability and only partial protection against water and sunshine.
(b) Small parts detachable such as valves, cocks, special pipes, gauges,
instruments, and accessories shall be removed in advance and separately
packed in the hermetic case of Fig. 1.
(c) If oil is filled in the equipment, drain cock shall be ruggedly protected not
to pilfer the oil inside.
4) BUNDLE PACKING (See Fig. 4)
Bundle packing shall be applied to simple and strong products which will not
be damaged by contact and shock during loading and unloading.
5) DRUM PACKING (See Fig. 5-1 and 5-2)
Metal or wooden drums shall be applied to transportation of liquid, powder,
cable, wire etc.
6) BARE PACKING (See Fig. 6)
Bare packing shall be applied to products of suitable size for bare packing,
and durable enough to endure transportation and storage with partial
protection.
7) Note :
For any packages of more than 10 tons or packages of cargo handling,
SUPPLIER shall submit the cargo-handling chart or lifting manual (specifying
roping method and rope dimensions) by two months before shipping. (See
Form F-2)
1.8 PACKING OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS
1) General
This packing manual shall be applied to the electrical equipment and
electrical spare parts except cables and cabling materials.
As for the form of the shipping mark, care mark, etc., which are not
mentioned in this section shall be complied with the previous description.
The procedure of item packing and inner packing for motor, instrument,
control panel, etc. is specified as follows.
Outer packing shall be executed with the hermetic wooden case. (See Fig. 1)
In principle, every electrical equipment as well as electrical spare parts must
be packed separately from the mechanical equipment, and the time or place
in low humidity must be selected to carry out the packing work.
2) Motor and actuator
(a) The motor shall be covered with a bag made of polyethylene film (0.1
mm or over in thickness), enclosing silicagel, and heat seal for extracting
inner air.
(e) SUPPLIER shall make packing with the hermetic wooden case by applying
suitable cushioning material so that the motor may not move in the case.
Note : The silicagel shall be kept away from directly contacting to the
equipment. To be same hereinafter as this. As for the silicagel, the first
class specified in JIS Z0701 shall be utilized. (Equivalent to water
absorbent ratio is more than 8% at humidity 20%, more than 20% at 50%,
more than 30% at 90%.) To be same hereinafter as this.
3) Local instruments and detecting device
(a) The instruments or device shall be covered with a bag of polyethylene film
(0.07 mm or over in thickness), and the mouth of bag shall be sealed with
tape after enclosing more than 100 g of silicagel and extracting inner air
thoroughly.
(b) The packaged equipment shall be put into a corrugated fiberboard box,
applying suitable cushioning material, and packed with barrier metal foil (20 μ or over in thickness) and sealed after extracting inner air.
(c) Hermetic wooden case packing shall be made with suitable cushioning
material.
Note : In principle, every pressure gauge, temperature gauge, etc.
shall be removed from the equipment and packed in hermetic package
according to above mentioned procedure.
SUPPLIER shall be requested to take countermeasure such as applying a
blind plug to fitting mouth of machine side in order to prevent from invasion
of rain, etc.
4) Panel mounted instruments
(a) All the instruments shall be covered with a bag of polyethylene film (0.07
mm or over in thickness), and the mouth of bag shall be sealed with tape
after enclosing more than 50 g of silicagel and extracting inner air
thoroughly, and packed in corrugated fiberboard box which is applied with
individually designated settling material.
(b) Every one unit which consists of corrugated fiberboard box
shall be wrapped and packed with barrier metal foil (20μ or over in
thickness) and sealed after extracting inner air.
(c) Suitable cushioning material shall be put into a corrugated fiberboard box.
(d) The corrugated fiberboard box shall be covered with water-proof paper
and sealed with water-proof tape.
(e) The hermetic wooden case packing shall be made applying suitable cushioning material.
5) Control panel and control box
(a) The whole surface of panel shall be covered with craft paper in order to
protect its paint-coated surface as well as to prevent it from sticking with
the packing material.
(b) In order that the instruments, which are remain their equipped position with
the panel, may not fall down from the panel surface. SUPPLIER shall fix
them up by such as polyethylene band with corrugated fiberboard, etc.
applying to the front surface of panel. It shall be carefully considered that
the band may not contact with the paint coated surface of panel and/or
instrument directly.
(c) To protect projecting parts and to prevent packing material from harming,
the projecting parts shall be carefully wrapped with such as felts.
(d) The whole body of panel shall be covered with barrier metal foil (20 μ or
over in thickness) and sealed after enclosing silicagel in the volume
determined by the designated calculating equation (Note 1) and extracting
inner air.
(e) The whole body shall be wrapped with polyethylene film(0.1 mm or over in
thickness) and sealed after extracting inner air.
(f) Applying cushioning material to the lower part of panel and fixing on the
skid. (Note 2).
The circumference of panel shall be fixed by retaining bars applied with
cushioning material
(g) For the outer packing, a hermetic wooden case shall be applied.

(Note 2) : When fixing the panel on skid by bolts, keeping of air tightness
of package must be taken into consideration.
It is allowable to make fixing without bolts, if other preferable
fixing method is adopted.
1.9 PACKING OF SPARE PARTS
All spare parts specified by SUPPLIER shall be clearly classified by item No.
and separately packed apart from main equipment.
When packing, SUPPLIER shall take care of prevention from rust.
Tags on which parts number of position number and drawing number are
described shall be attached on each spare parts, in order to classify and
deliver them easily to the final customer.
SUPPLIER is responsible to provide necessary arrangements for special tools
and materials such as lifting beams and jigs, sling wires, hook, etc. to be
required for loading and unloading.
1.10 PROFORMA PACKING LIST (See Form F-3)
This is necessary for the arrangement of shipment and space booking.
SUPPLIER shall submit the proforma packing list by two months before
shipping.
1.11 DETAILED PACKING LIST (See Form F-4)

2. SHIPPING MARKS
Stencil markings shall be carried out as follows, in comply with the prime contract provisions with the final client.
Marks shall be stenciled with black or red oil paint (not erasable with water) on the equipment, in clear capital letters. Marked letters, which are variable in size according to package size, shall be generally 50 mm square, and only No. of the package, destination and gross weight shall be written with 100 mm square letters.
Handwriting letters shall not be accepted.
Examples of stencil markings : refer to Form F-6.
1.1 DISTRIBUTION OF MARKS (See Form F-6)
Each mark shall be stenciled basically according to the distribution example shown in Form F-6.
1.2 SHIPPING MARKS (See Form F-1)
Shipping marks shall be stenciled with black oil paint.
Regarding skid or bundle, shipping marks shall be stenciled with black paint on paint-baked metal plates or equivalents, which shall be attached symmetrically at two points of package not to remove.
When marking is made dirctly on equipment as bundle or bare packing, marking shall be written on a white-painted base of 150 mm (length) x 200 mm (width).
1.3 CORNER COLOR MARKS (See Form F-7)
Corner color marks shall be stenciled at 4 upper corners of package with oil paint according to the attached Form F-7. Color shall be determined by section, as follows.
1.4 CARE MARKS (See Form F-8)
Care marks shall be stenciled with red oil paint as per the standard shown in Form F-8.
When care marks except those specified in Form F-8 are necessary
SUPPLIER’S proposal shall be approved by BUYER.
