Minnesota Timberwolves Sam Cassell (19) passes away from New York Knicks Shandon Anderson (49) in the second half at New York's Madison Square Garden Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003. The Timberwolves won the game 96-77. Latrell Sprewell, wearing a brown suit, jumped off the bench and yelled, ``That's what I'm talking about!'' as the Minnesota Timberwolves opened a huge early lead and cruised past the New York Knicks 96-77 on Saturday. Sprewell's outburst came after Troy Hudson hit his second 3-pointer of the opening 3 minutes, helping Minnesota to a 13-0 lead. Minnesota eventually led by as many as 20 in handing the Knicks their third straight preseason loss. Kevin Garnett scored 20 points, Hudson had 15 and Sam Cassell added 14. Sprewell sat out with a sore Achilles' tendon in his return to the arena where he spent the past five seasons. Keith Van Horn, the player New York acquired for Sprewell, led the Knicks with 15 points on 5-for-14 shooting. Rookie Matt Carroll added 14. Hudson got the start at shooting guard in place of Sprewell, but he'll likely come off the bench during the regular season after being Minnesota's starting point guard last year. ``If we've got six starters, we've got six, but he's going to be as important to us as (Sacramento's) Bobby Jackson. He gives us a lot of flexibility,'' Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. Hudson finished with three 3-pointers and five assists, while Cassell shot 6-for-7 with nine assists. Hudson said he expects to play alongside Cassell at times during the season when he substitutes for Sprewell, and playing the off-guard position won't be a challenge for him since he did it with Orlando for two seasons. The six-year veteran averaged a career-high 14.2 points last season. ``With Sam, both of us can score the ball if we're in position,'' Hudson said. ``If I've got the ball, I'll push it upcourt. If he has it, he'll push it upcourt. It's basically interchangeable.'' Sprewell, expected to play exhibition games next week, engaged in some playful interaction with a small crowd. After the game, he didn't notice as Knicks president Scott Layden -- the man who traded him -- walked directly behind him while heading toward the New York locker room. The Knicks didn't use newly acquired center Dikembe Mutombo, who signed Thursday. He may play Sunday night against the San Antonio Spurs. New York's Antonio McDyess, recovering from a fractured kneecap that sidelined him for all of last season, said he hopes to be playing next month.

Orlando Magic's Grant Hill, center, standing alongside teammate Tracy McGrady, right, gives a thumbs-up sign to fans in attendance at the Magic's preseason game against the Miami Heat on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Orlando, Fla. McGrady didn't play due to a sore right hip and Hill is out indefinitely while rehabilitating his left ankle.
Lamar Odom had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists as the Miami Heat remained undefeated in the preseason by beating the Orlando Magic 77-75 Saturday night. Loren Woods had 15 rebounds, the second time in three preseason games he has reached double figures. Rasual Butler added 10 points in 15 minutes, and his fast-break basket put the Heat ahead 76-61 with 5:23 remaining. Orlando rallied within two points behind a 14-1 run, capped by consecutive 3-pointers by Britton Johnsen and Shammond Williams. But Williams' driving layup rimmed out at the buzzer to keep the Magic winless in the preseason. The Magic were led by 17 points and six assists from Williams. Juwan Howard scored 12 points, but shot 3-for-15. Tracy McGrady sat out his second straight game with a sore right hip. Drew Gooden had six points and five rebounds before mildly spraining his right ankle in the second quarter. Dwyane Wade, drafted fifth overall by Miami, sprained his left ankle late in the second quarter and didn't return. He had six points on 3-of-10 shooting.

San Antonio Spurs' Anthony Carter, left, and Robert Horry, right, defend as Philadelphia 76ers' Allen
Iverson looks to pass during the first half of a preseason game Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in
Philadelphia.
Tim Duncan had 12 points and five rebounds in limited action, as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Philadelphia 76ers 100-98 in Saturday's preseason game. Willie Green had 18 points and Allen Iverson added 13 to lead the short-handed Sixers, who were without five key players. Malik Rose grabbed eight rebounds to go with ten points and Anthony Carter opened the fourth quarter with seven of his 12 points to give San Antonio (2-0) its largest lead at 15. Philadelphia (1-2) trimmed the Spurs' lead to six with 1:19 remaining, but Devin Brown added a pair of free throws that ended Philadelphia's run. Tony Parker had three points in eight first-quarter minutes for the Spurs before hobbling off the court with a twisted ankle. He didn't return. Sixers' forward Glenn Robinson sat out his second straight game with a left knee injury. Derrick Coleman (groin) -- who has yet to play this preseason -- was also inactive, as were Greg Buckner (hamstring), Todd MacCulloch (foot) and Monty Williams (knee). Kenny Thomas left the game in the fourth quarter with a right thigh contusion. For San Antonio, only Ron Mercer (groin) did not dress.

Chicago Bulls' Eddy Curry goes for a shot againt Milwaukee Bucks' Erick Strickland (20) during the first half of a preseason game Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Milwaukee. Curry was charged with an offensive foul on the play. Michael Redd had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and T.J. Ford hit two crucial free throws with 24.8 seconds left to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 102-97 win over the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night. Ford, the eighth pick in this year's draft, finished with six points, eight assists and six rebounds in 32 minutes. Desmond Mason added 22 points and Marcus Haislip 15 for the Bucks (1-2). Jamal Crawford had 26 points and 12 assists for the Bulls (1-2). Eddie Curry added 24 points, while top draft pick Kirk Hinrich had five points in 19 minutes. Ford and Hinrich were rivals during college while playing at Texas and Kansas, respectively. They didn't waste any time getting reacquainted. Both started the fourth quarter and Ford took a charge from Hinrich to force a Bulls' turnover. Moments later, Ford hit a jumper over Hinrich that gave Milwaukee a 96-87 lead with 4:52 to play. A minute later, Ford forced Hinrich to turn the ball over. Hinrich's layup with 2:40 left pulled the Bulls to 98-92 before Ford hit his free throws. The game was the home debut for new Milwaukee coach Terry Porter, who took over after George Karl was fired following last season. The Bucks had seven players miss the game due to injury, while the Bulls had four who were out. Chicago coach Bill Cartwright had laryngitis and could barely whisper his directions.

Antawn Jamison scored 20 points and added a key basket in the final minute as the Dallas Mavericks held off the New Orleans Hornets 100-99 in a preseason game Saturday night. The Hornets had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but they failed to get off a shot on their last possession. New Orleans trailed by 16 points in the second half before rallying late. Jamaal Magloire's layup brought the Hornets within a point with 10.8 seconds left, and Dallas' Travis Best missed two free throws with 10.2 seconds left. New Orleans, out of timeouts, quickly brought the ball up the court. Darrell Armstrong passed the ball to Courtney Alexander who took two dribbles before firing up a 3-pointer after the buzzer sounded. Jamison, acquired from Golden State in August, hit a short baseline runner with 27.2 seconds remaining to extend the Mavericks' lead to 98-94. He did not play in the preseason opener Tuesday night because of back spasms. Armstrong hit a 3-pointer with 17.8 seconds left to cut Dallas' lead to 98-97 and Best connected on two free throws with 12.7 seconds remaining before the late frenzy. Dallas (2-1) was without starting guard Michael Finley. He missed his third straight preseason game with a strained right quad. Mavericks forward Eduardo Najera also sat out with sprained right shoulder. Armstrong led New Orleans (1-1) with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Magloire scored 13. Dirk Nowitzki added 16 points for Dallas (2-1) and Jiri Welsch had 15. New Orleans was without starting forwards Jamal Mashburn and P.J. Brown. Phoenix has not shot better than 50 percent in its three preseason games. Joe Johnson led the Suns with 22 points. Amare Stoudamire added 19 and nine rebounds. Denver outrebounded Phoenix 53-40. Dejan Koturovic of Yugoslavia, signed by the Suns as a free agent Wednesday, did not dress for the second game. Phoenix's first-round draft pick, Zarko Cabarkapa of Yugoslavia, is out for the preseason after having hernia surgery Oct. 3.

Sacramento Kings guard Mike Bibby, left, defends Golden State Warriors guard Nick Van Exel during the first half Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Oakland, Calif. Speedy Claxton scored 22 points and the Golden State Warriors gave Nick Van Exel a win in his Oakland debut, 111-94 over the Sacramento Kings in a preseason game Saturday night. Mike Dunleavy added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Warriors, while Jason Richardson and Erick Dampier each scored 12 points. Claxton, who would have been the starting point guard had Van Exel not been acquired in an August trade with Dallas, went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. The cold-shooting Kings, playing without star Chris Webber as he rehabs his left knee, were led by reserve forward Darius Songaila with 16 points. Peja Stojakovic and Mike Bibby each had 14. Sacramento dug itself into a deep hole with spotty defense and 38.9 percent shooting. The Kings pulled within 12 on a layin by Songaila with 1:58 left in the third quarter and made runs in the fourth period, but couldn't get back into the game. Van Exel received a warm ovation before his first home game. The 31-year-old Van Exel showed early what kind of presence he will be in this lineup, zipping passes around the perimeter and scoring on a finger roll and getting fouled, then converting the free throw for a three-point play. He finished with nine points, five assists and four rebounds. He will be leading an offense that averaged 102.3 points per game last season, second only to the Mavericks. Dunleavy, on a mission to make more of an impact and earn more minutes in his second NBA season, made his first three shots and four of his first five with a 3-pointer. He also played heads-up defense, knocking the ball away from 7-foot-1 Vlade Divac and going hard to the glass. The Warriors, who have missed the playoffs the last nine seasons, scored 10 unanswered points to start the second quarter for a 48-37 lead, and a steal and dunk by Mickael Pietrus made it 58-43 with 5:55 left in the second. Golden State shot 55.1 percent in the first half on the way to a 73-56 halftime lead. The Warriors were without forward Troy Murphy, who has plantar fasciitis in his right foot. New Golden State forward Clifford Robinson sported an orange headband in the first half, then switched to navy blue at halftime -- trying out the two main colors of his new team
